Exponential asymptotic stability of Riemann shocks of hyperbolic systems of balance laws

For strictly entropic Riemann shock solutions of strictly hyperbolic systems of balance laws, we prove that exponential spectral stability implies large-time asymptotic orbital stability. As a preparation, we also prove similar results for constant solutions of initial value and initial boundary value problems, that seem to be new in this generality. Main key technical ingredients include the design of a nonlinear change of variables providing a hypocoercive Kawashima-type structure with dissipative boundary conditions in the high-frequency regime and the explicit identification of most singular parts of the linearized evolution, both being deduced from the mere spectral assumption.

Uniform asymptotic stability for convection-reaction-diffusion equations in the inviscid limit towards Riemann shocks

The present contribution proves the asymptotic orbital stability of viscous regularizations of stable Riemann shocks of scalar balance laws, uniformly with respect to the viscosity/diffusion parameter $ε$. The uniformity is understood in the sense that all constants involved in the stability statements are uniform and that the corresponding multiscale $ε$-dependent topology reduces to the classical $W^{1,\infty}$-topology when restricted to functions supported away from the shock location. Main difficulties include that uniformity precludes any use of parabolic regularization to close regularity estimates, that the global-in-time analysis is also spatially multiscale due to the coexistence of nontrivial slow parts with fast shock-layer parts, that the limiting smooth spectral problem (in fast variables) has no spectral gap and that uniformity requires a very precise and unusual design of the phase shift encoding orbital stability. In particular, our analysis builds a phase that somehow interpolates between the hyperbolic shock location prescribed by the Rankine-Hugoniot conditions and the non-uniform shift arising merely from phasing out the non-decaying $0$-mode, as in the classical stability analysis for fronts of reaction-diffusion equations.

Note on the stability of viscous roll-waves

In this note, we announce a complete classification of stability of periodic roll-wave solutions of the viscous shallow-water equations, from their onset at Froude number $F\approx 2$ up to the infinite-Froude limit. For intermediate Froude numbers, we obtain numerically a particularly simple power-law relation between $F$ and the boundaries of the region of stable periods, that appears potentially useful in hydraulic engineering applications. In the asymptotic regime $F\to 2$ (onset), we provide an analytic expression of the stability boundaries whereas in the limit $F\to\infty$, we show that roll-waves are always unstable.

Co-periodic stability of periodic waves in some Hamiltonian PDEs

The stability of periodic traveling wave solutions to dispersive PDEs with respect to `arbitrary' perturbations is still widely open. The focus is put here on stability with respect to perturbations of the same period as the wave, for KdV-like systems of one-dimensional Hamiltonian PDEs. Stability criteria are derived and investigated first in a general abstract framework, and then applied to three basic examples that are very closely related, and ubiquitous in mathematical physics, namely, a quasilinear version of the generalized Korteweg--de Vries equation (qKdV), and the Euler--Korteweg system in both Eulerian coordinates (EKE) and in mass Lagrangian coordinates (EKL). Those criteria consist of a necessary condition for spectral stability, and of a sufficient condition for orbital stability. Both are expressed in terms of a single function, the abbreviated action integral along the orbits of waves in the phase plane, which is the counterpart of the solitary waves moment of instability introduced by Boussinesq. Regarding solitary waves, the celebrated Grillakis--Shatah--Strauss stability criteria amount to looking for the sign of the second derivative of the moment of instability with respect to the wave speed. For periodic waves, the most striking results obtained here can be summarized as: an odd value for the difference between N -- the size of the PDE system -- and the negative signature of the Hessian of the action implies spectral instability, whereas a negative signature of the same Hessian being equal to N implies orbital stability. Since these stability criteria are merely encoded by the negative signature of matrices, they can at least be checked numerically. Various numerical experiments are presented, which clearly discriminate between stable cases and unstable cases for (qKdV), (EKE) and (EKL).

Space-modulated Stability and Averaged Dynamics

In this brief note we give a brief overview of the comprehensive theory, recently obtained by the author jointly with Johnson, Noble and Zumbrun, that describes the nonlinear dynamics about spectrally stable periodic waves of parabolic systems and announce parallel results for the linearized dynamics near cnoidal waves of the Korteweg-de Vries equation. The latter are expected to contribute to the development of a dispersive theory, still to come.

Stability of viscous St. Venant roll-waves: from onset to infinite-Froude number limit

We study the spectral stability of roll-wave solutions of the viscous St. Venant equations modeling inclined shallow-water flow, both at onset in the small-Froude number or "weakly unstable" limit $F\to 2^+$ and for general values of the Froude number $F$, including the limit $F\to +\infty$. In the former, $F\to 2^+$, limit, the shallow water equations are formally approximated by a Korteweg de Vries/Kuramoto-Sivashinsky (KdV-KS) equation that is a singular perturbation of the standard Korteweg de Vries (KdV) equation modeling horizontal shallow water flow. Our main analytical result is to rigorously validate this formal limit, showing that stability as $F\to 2^+$ is equivalent to stability of the corresponding KdV-KS waves in the KdV limit. Together with recent results obtained for KdV-KS by Johnson--Noble--Rodrigues--Zumbrun and Barker, this gives not only the first rigorous verification of stability for any single viscous St. Venant roll wave, but a complete classification of stability in the weakly unstable limit. In the remainder of the paper, we investigate numerically and analytically the evolution of the stability diagram as Froude number increases to infinity. Notably, we find transition at around $F=2.3$ from weakly unstable to different, large-$F$ behavior, with stability determined by simple power law relations. The latter stability criteria are potentially useful in hydraulic engineering applications, for which typically $2.5\leq F\leq 6.0$.

Nonlocalized modulation of periodic reaction diffusion waves: The Whitham equation

In a companion paper, we established nonlinear stability with detailed diffusive rates of decay of spectrally stable periodic traveling-wave solutions of reaction diffusion systems under small perturbations consisting of a nonlocalized modulation plus a localized perturbation. Here, we determine time-asymptotic behavior under such perturbations, showing that solutions consist to leading order of a modulation whose parameter evolution is governed by an associated Whitham averaged equation.

Behavior of periodic solutions of viscous conservation laws under localized and nonlocalized perturbations

We establish nonlinear stability and asymptotic behavior of traveling periodic waves of viscous conservation laws under localized perturbations or nonlocalized perturbations asymptotic to constant shifts in phase, showing that long-time behavior is governed by an associated second-order formal Whitham modulation system. A key point is to identify the way in which initial perturbations translate to initial data for this formal system, a task accomplished by detailed estimates on the linearized solution operator about the background wave. Notably, our approach gives both a common theoretical treatment and a complete classification in terms of "phase-coupling" or "-decoupling" of general systems of conservation or balance laws, encompassing cases that had previously been studied separately or not at all. At the same time, our refined description of solutions gives the new result of nonlinear asymptotic stability with respect to localized perturbations in the phase-decoupled case, further distinguishing behavior in the different cases. An interesting technical aspect of our analysis is that for systems of conservation laws the Whitham modulation description is of system rather than scalar form, as a consequence of which renormalization methods such as have been used to treat the reaction-diffusion case in general do not seem to apply.

Nonlinear modulational stability of periodic traveling-wave solutions of the generalized Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation

In this paper we consider the spectral and nonlinear stability of periodic traveling wave solutions of a generalized Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation. In particular, we resolve the long-standing question of nonlinear modulational stability by demonstrating that spectrally stable waves are nonlinearly stable when subject to small localized (integrable) perturbations. Our analysis is based upon detailed estimates of the linearized solution operator, which are complicated by the fact that the (necessarily essential) spectrum of the associated linearization intersects the imaginary axis at the origin. We carry out a numerical Evans function study of the spectral problem and find bands of spectrally stable periodic traveling waves, in close agreement with previous numerical studies of Frisch-She-Thual, Bar-Nepomnyashchy, Chang-Demekhin-Kopelevich, and others carried out by other techniques. We also compare predictions of the associated Whitham modulation equations, which formally describe the dynamics of weak large scale perturbations of a periodic wave train, with numerical time evolution studies, demonstrating their effectiveness at a practical level. For the reader's convenience, we include in an appendix the corresponding treatment of the Swift-Hohenberg equation, a nonconservative counterpart of the generalized Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation for which the nonlinear stability analysis is considerably simpler, together with numerical Evans function analyses extending spectral stability analyses of Mielke and Schneider.

Spectral stability of periodic wave trains of the Korteweg-de Vries/Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation in the Korteweg-de Vries limit

We study the spectral stability of a family of periodic wave trains of the Korteweg-de Vries/Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation $ \partial_t v+v\partial_x v+\partial_x^3 v+δ(\partial_x^2 v +\partial_x^4 v)=0$, $δ>0$, in the Korteweg-de Vries limit $δ\to 0$, a canonical limit describing small-amplitude weakly unstable thin film flow. More precisely, we carry out a rigorous singular perturbation analysis reducing the problem to the evaluation for each Bloch parameter $ξ\in [0,2π]$ of certain elliptic integrals derived formally (on an incomplete set of frequencies/Bloch parameters, hence as necessary conditions for stability) and numerically evaluated by Bar and Nepomnyashchy \cite{BN}, thus obtaining, up to machine error, complete conclusions about stability. The main technical difficulty is in treating the large-frequency and small Bloch-parameter regimes not studied by Bar and Nepomnyashchy \cite{BN}, which requires techniques rather different from classical Fenichel-type analysis. The passage from small-$δ$ to small-$ξ$ behavior is particularly interesting, using in an essential way an analogy with hyperbolic relaxation at the level of the Whitham modulation equations.

Nonlocalized modulation of periodic reaction diffusion waves: Nonlinear stability

By a refinement of the technique used by Johnson and Zumbrun to show stability under localized perturbations, we show that spectral stability implies nonlinear modulational stability of periodic traveling-wave solutions of reaction diffusion systems under small perturbations consisting of a nonlocalized modulation plus a localized perturbation. The main new ingredient is a detailed analysis of linear behavior under modulational data $\bar u'(x)h_0(x)$, where $\bar u$ is the background profile and $h_0$ is the initial modulation

Metastability of solitary roll wave solutions of the St. Venant equations with viscosity

We study by a combination of numerical and analytical Evans function techniques the stability of solitary wave solutions of the St. Venant equations for viscous shallow-water flow down an incline, and related models. Our main result is to exhibit examples of metastable solitary waves for the St. Venant equations, with stable point spectrum indicating coherence of the wave profile but unstable essential spectrum indicating oscillatory convective instabilities shed in its wake. We propose a mechanism based on ``dynamic spectrum'' of the wave profile, by which a wave train of solitary pulses can stabilize each other by de-amplification of convective instabilities as they pass through successive waves. We present numerical time evolution studies supporting these conclusions, which bear also on the possibility of stable periodic solutions close to the homoclinic. For the closely related viscous Jin-Xin model, by contrast, for which the essential spectrum is stable, we show using the stability index of Gardner--Zumbrun that solitary wave pulses are always exponentially unstable, possessing point spectra with positive real part.

Stability of Periodic Kuramoto-Sivashinsky Waves

In this note, we announce a general result resolving the long-standing question of nonlinear modulational stability, or stability with respect to localized perturbations, of periodic traveling-wave solutions of the generalized Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation, establishing that spectral modulational stability, defined in the standard way, implies nonlinear modulational stability with sharp rates of decay. The approach extends readily to other second- and higher-order parabolic equations, for example, the Cahn-Hilliard equation or more general thin film models.

Whitham Averaged Equations and Modulational Stability of Periodic Traveling Waves of a Hyperbolic-Parabolic Balance Law

In this note, we report on recent findings concerning the spectral and nonlinear stability of periodic traveling wave solutions of hyperbolic-parabolic systems of balance laws, as applied to the St. Venant equations of shallow water flow down an incline. We begin by introducing a natural set of spectral stability assumptions, motivated by considerations from the Whitham averaged equations, and outline the recent proof yielding nonlinear stability under these conditions. We then turn to an analytical and numerical investigation of the verification of these spectral stability assumptions. While spectral instability is shown analytically to hold in both the Hopf and homoclinic limits, our numerical studies indicates spectrally stable periodic solutions of intermediate period. A mechanism for this moderate-amplitude stabilization is proposed in terms of numerically observed "metastability" of the the limiting homoclinic orbits.
