Hamiltonian Expression of Curvature Tensors in the York Canonical Basis: I) The Riemann Tensor and Ricci Scalars

By using the York canonical basis of ADM tetrad gravity, in a formulation using radar 4-coordinates for the parametrization of the 3+1 splitting of the space-time, it is possible to write the 4-Riemann tensor of a globally hyperbolic, asymptotically Minkowskian space-time as a Hamiltonian tensor, whose components are 4-scalars with respect to the ordinary world 4-coordinates, plus terms vanishing due to Einstein's equations. Therefore "on-shell" we find the expression of the Hamiltonian 4-Riemann tensor. Moreover, the 3+1 splitting of the space-time used to define the phase space allows us to introduce a Hamiltonian set of null tetrads and to find the Hamiltonian expression of the 4-Ricci scalars of the Newman-Penrose formalism. This material will be used in the second paper to study the 4-Weyl tensor, the 4-Weyl scalars and the four Weyl eigenvalues and to clarify the notions of Dirac and Bergmann observables.

Hamiltonian Expression of Curvature Tensors in the York Canonical Basis: II) The Weyl Tensor, Weyl Scalars, the Weyl Eigenvalues and the Problem of the Observables of the Gravitational Field

We find the Hamiltonian expression in the York basis of canonical ADM tetrad gravity of the 4-Weyl tensor of the asymptotically Minkowskian space-time. Like for the 4-Riemann tensor we find a radar tensor (whose components are 4-scalars due to the use of radar 4-coordinates), which coincides with the 4-Weyl tensor on-shell on the solutions of Einstein's equations. Then, by using the Hamiltonian null tetrads, we find the Hamiltonian expression of the Weyl scalars of the Newman-Perose approach and of the four eigenvalues of the 4-Weyl tensor. After having introduced the Dirac observables of canonical gravity, whose determination requires the solution of the super-Hamiltonian and super-momentum constraints, we discuss the connection of the Dirac observables with the notion of 4-scalar Bergmann observables. Due to the use of radar 4-coordinates these two types of observables coincide in our formulation of canonical ADM tetrad gravity. However, contrary to Bergmann proposal, the Weyl eigenvalues are shown not to be Bergmann observables, so that their relevance is only in their use (first suggested by Bergmann and Komar) for giving a physical identification as point-events of the mathematical points of the space-time 4-manifold. Finally we give the expression of the Weyl scalars in the Hamiltonian Post-Minkowskian linearization of canonical ADM tetrad gravity in the family of (non-harmonic) 3-orthogonal Schwinger time gauges.

ADM Pseudotensors, Conserved Quantities and Covariant Conservation Laws in General Relativity

The ADM formalism is reviewed and techniques for decomposing generic components of metric, connection and curvature are obtained. These techniques will turn out to be enough to decompose not only Einstein equations but also covariant conservation laws. Then a number of independent sets of hypotheses that are sufficient (though non-necessary) to obtain standard ADM quantities (and Hamiltonian) from covariant conservation laws are considered. This determines explicitely the range in which standard techniques are equivalent to covariant conserved quantities. The Schwarzschild metric in different coordinates is then considered, showing how the standard ADM quantities fail dramatically in non-Cartesian coordinates or even worse when asymptotically flatness is not manifest; while, in view of their covariance, covariant conservation laws give the correct result in all cases.

The Rest-Frame Instant Form and Dirac Observables for the Open Nambu String

The rest-frame instant form of the positive-energy part of the open Nambu string is developed. The string is described as a decoupled non-local canonical non-covariant Newton-Wigner center of mass plus a canonical basis of Wigner-covariant relative variables living in the Wigner 3-spaces. The center of mass carries a realization of the Poincare' algebra depending upon the invariant mass and the rest-spin of the string, functions of the relative variables. A canonical basis of gauge invariant Dirac observables is built with Frenet-Serret geometrical methods. Some comments on canonical quantization are made.

The Physical Role of Gravitational and Gauge Degrees of Freedom in General Relativity - I: Dynamical Synchronization and Generalized Inertial Effects

This is the first of a couple of papers in which, by exploiting the capabilities of the Hamiltonian approach to general relativity, we get a number of technical achievements that are instrumental both for a disclosure of \emph{new} results concerning specific issues, and for new insights about \emph{old} foundational problems of the theory. The first paper includes: 1) a critical analysis of the various concepts of symmetry related to the Einstein-Hilbert Lagrangian viewpoint on the one hand, and to the Hamiltonian viewpoint, on the other. This analysis leads, in particular, to a re-interpretation of {\it active} diffeomorphisms as {\it passive and metric-dependent} dynamical symmetries of Einstein's equations, a re-interpretation which enables to disclose the (nearly unknown) connection of a subgroup of them to Hamiltonian gauge transformations {\it on-shell}; 2) a re-visitation of the canonical reduction of the ADM formulation of general relativity, with particular emphasis on the geometro-dynamical effects of the gauge-fixing procedure, which amounts to the definition of a \emph{global (non-inertial) space-time laboratory}. This analysis discloses the peculiar \emph{dynamical nature} that the traditional definition of distant simultaneity and clock-synchronization assume in general relativity, as well as the {\it gauge relatedness} of the "conventions" which generalize the classical Einstein's convention.

Centers of Mass and Rotational Kinematics for the Relativistic N-Body Problem in the Rest-Frame Instant Form

In the Wigner-covariant rest-frame instant form of dynamics it is possible to develop a relativistic kinematics for the N-body problem. The Wigner hyperplanes define the intrinsic rest frame and realize the separation of the center-of-mass. Three notions of {\it external} relativistic center of mass can be defined only in terms of the {\it external} Poincaré group realization. Inside the Wigner hyperplane, an {\it internal} unfaithful realization of the Poincaré group is defined. The three concepts of {\it internal} center of mass weakly {\it coincide} and are eliminated by the rest-frame conditions. An adapted canonical basis of relative variables is found. The invariant mass is the Hamiltonian for the relative motions. In this framework we can introduce the same {\it dynamical body frames}, {\it orientation-shape} variables, {\it spin frame} and {\it canonical spin bases} for the rotational kinematics developed for the non-relativistic N-body problem.

The Semi-Classical Relativistic Darwin Potential for Spinning Particles in the Rest-Frame Instant Form: 2-Body Bound States with Spin 1/2 Constituents

In the semiclassical approximation of Grassmann-valued electric charges for regularizing Coulomb self-energies, we extract the unique acceleration-independent interaction hidden in any Lienard-Wiechert solution for the system of N positive-energy spinning particles plus the electromagnetic field in the radiation gauge of the rest-frame instant form. With the help of a semiclassical Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation, this allows us to find the relativistic semiclassical Darwin potential. In the 2-body case the quantization of the lowest order reproduces exactly the results from the reduction of the Bethe-Salpeter equation.

A Canonical Decomposition in Collective and Relative Variables of a Klein-Gordon Field in the Rest-Frame Wigner-Covariant Instant Form

The canonical decomposition of a real Klein-Gordon field in collective and relative variables proposed by Longhi and Materassi is reformulated on spacelike hypersurfaces. This allows to obtain the complete canonical reduction of the system on Wigner hyperplanes, namely in the rest-frame Wigner-covariant instant form of dynamics. From the study of Dixon's multipoles for the energy-momentum tensor on the Wigner hyperplanes we derive the definition of the canonical center-of-mass variable for a Klein-Gordon field configuration: it turns out that the Longhi-Materassi global variable should be interpreted as a center of phase of the field configuration. A detailed study of the kinematical "external" and "internal" properties of the field configuration on the Wigner hyperplanes is done. The construction is then extended to charged Klein-Gordon fields: the centers of phase of the two real components can be combined to define a global center of phase and a collective relative variable describing the action-reaction between the two Feshbach-Villars components of the field with definite sign of energy and charge. The Dixon multipoles for both the energy-momentum and the electromagnetic current are given. Also the coupling of the Klein-Gordon field to scalar relativistic particles is studied and it is shown that in the reduced phase space, besides the particle and field relative variables, there is also a collective relative variable describing the relative motion of the particle subsytem with respect to the field one.

Standard and Generalized Newtonian Gravities as ``Gauge'' Theories of the Extended Galilei Group - II: Dynamical Three-Space Theories

In a preceding paper we developed a reformulation of Newtonian gravitation as a {\it gauge} theory of the extended Galilei group. In the present one we derive two true generalizations of Newton's theory (a {\it ten-fields} and an {\it eleven-fields} theory), in terms of an explicit Lagrangian realization of the {\it absolute time} dynamics of a Riemannian three-space. They turn out to be {\it gauge invariant} theories of the extended Galilei group in the same sense in which general relativity is said to be a {\it gauge} theory of the Poincaré group. The {\it ten-fields} theory provides a dynamical realization of some of the so-called ``Newtonian space-time structures'' which have been geometrically classified by Künzle and Kuchař. The {\it eleven-fields} theory involves a {\it dilaton-like} scalar potential in addition to Newton's potential and, like general relativity, has a three-metric with {\it two} dynamical degrees of freedom. It is interesting to find that, within the linear approximation, such degrees of freedom show {\it graviton-like} features: they satisfy a wave equation and propagate with a velocity related to the scalar Newtonian potential.
