A ground state $^{22}$Al halo is unlikely

We report the decisive resolution of the ground state spin and parity of the proton-dripline nucleus $^{22}$Al, a prime candidate for a proton halo. The resolution stems from the first $β$-delayed charged particle emission experiment in the Gas Stopping Area at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB), leveraging high-intensity, low-energy beams extracted from the Advanced Cryogenic Gas Stopper (ACGS). The pristine beam quality from FRIB and the ACGS enabled a sensitive particle identification technique using thin silicon detectors, allowing for the suppression of the dominant proton background and the first observation of the weak $β$-delayed $α$ transition from the Isobaric Analog State in $^{22}$Mg to the $^{18}$Ne ground state. This observation uniquely fixes the $^{22}$Al ground state as $4^+$. The valence proton is confined by a dominant $d$-wave centrifugal barrier which, combined with the Coulomb repulsion, hinders the tunneling required for halo formation despite the exceptionally low proton separation energy of $^{22}$Al.

$^{25}$Si $β^+$-decay spectroscopy

$β$-decay spectroscopy provides valuable information on exotic nuclei and a stringent test for nuclear theories beyond the stability line. To search for new $β$-delayed protons and $γ$ rays of $^{25}$Si to investigate the properties of $^{25}$Al excited states. $^{25}$Si $β$ decays were measured by using the Gaseous Detector with Germanium Tagging system at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory. The protons and $γ$ rays emitted in the decay were detected simultaneously. A Monte Carlo method was used to model the Doppler broadening of $^{24}$Mg $γ$-ray lines caused by nuclear recoil from proton emission. Shell-model calculations using two newly developed universal \textit{sd}-shell Hamiltonians, USDC and USDI, were performed. The most precise $^{25}$Si half-life to date has been determined. A new proton branch at 724(4)~keV and new proton-$γ$-ray coincidences have been identified. Three $^{24}$Mg $γ$-ray lines and eight $^{25}$Al $γ$-ray lines are observed for the first time in $^{25}$Si decay. The first measurement of the $^{25}$Si $β$-delayed $γ$ ray intensities through the $^{25}$Al unbound states is reported. All the bound states of $^{25}$Al are observed to be populated in the $β$ decay of $^{25}$Si. Several inconsistencies between the previous measurements have been resolved, and new information on the $^{25}$Al level scheme is provided. An enhanced decay scheme has been constructed and compared to the mirror decay of $^{25}$Na and the shell-model calculations. The measured excitation energies, $γ$-ray and proton branchings, log~$ft$ values, and Gamow-Teller transition strengths for the states of $^{25}$Al populated in the $β$ decay of $^{25}$Si are in good agreement with the shell-model calculations, offering gratifyingly consistent insights into the fine nuclear structure of $^{25}$Al.

Determination of the cluster-decay branching ratio from a near-threshold molecular state in $^{10}$Be

A puzzle has long existed for the $α$-cluster content in the near-threshold 7.54 MeV state of $^{10}$Be. A new measurement was conducted to measure the cluster-decay partial width of this state, using the reaction $\rm{^9Be}(\rm{^9Be}, \rm{^{10}Be}^{*} \rightarrow α+ \rm{^6He})\rm{^8Be}$ at 45 MeV beam energy. Special measures were taken to reduce the strong near-threshold background. The neutron-decay strength was also obtained based on the three-fold coincident measurement. A cluster-decay branching ratio of $(4.04 \pm 1.26)\times 10^{-4}$ is obtained, resulting in a reasonably large $α$-cluster spectroscopic factor. The present work confirms the formation of the $σ$-bond molecular rotational band headed by the 6.18 MeV state in $^{10}$Be.

First Penning trap mass measurement of $^{36}$Ca

Isobaric quintets provide the best test of the isobaric multiplet mass equation (IMME) and can uniquely identify higher order corrections suggestive of isospin symmetry breaking effects in the nuclear Hamiltonian. The Generalized IMME (GIMME) is a novel microscopic interaction theory that predicts an extension to the quadratic form of the IMME. Only the $A=20, 32$ $T=2$ quintets have the exotic $T_z = -2$ member ground state mass determined to high-precision by Penning trap mass spectrometry. In this work, we establish $A=36$ as the third high-precision $T=2$ isobaric quintet with the $T_z = -2$ member ground state mass measured by Penning trap mass spectrometry and provide the first test of the predictive power of the GIMME. A radioactive beam of neutron-deficient $^{36}$Ca was produced by projectile fragmentation at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory. The beam was thermalized and the mass of $^{36}$Ca$^+$ and $^{36}$Ca$^{2+}$ measured by the Time of Flight - Ion Cyclotron Resonance method in the LEBIT 9.4 T Penning trap. We measure the mass excess of $^{36}$Ca to be ME$ = -6483.6(56)$ keV, an improvement in precision by a factor of 6 over the literature value. The new datum is considered together with evaluated nuclear data on the $A=36$, $T=2$ quintet. We find agreement with the quadratic form of the IMME given by isospin symmetry, but only coarse qualitative agreement with predictions of the GIMME. A total of three isobaric quintets have their most exotic members measured by Penning trap mass spectrometry. The GIMME predictions in the $T = 2$ quintet appear to break down for $A = 32$ and greater.

Experimentally well-constrained masses of $^{27}$P and $^{27}$S: Implications for studies of explosive binary systems

The mass of $^{27}$P was predicted to impact the X-ray burst (XRB) model predictions of burst light curves and the composition of the burst ashes. To address the uncertainties and inconsistencies in the reported $^{27}$P masses in literature, a wealth of information has been extracted from the $β$-decay spectroscopy of the drip-line nucleus $^{27}$S. We determine the most precise mass excess of $^{27}$P to date to be $-659(9)$~keV, which is 63~keV (2.3$σ$) higher than the AME2016 recommended value of $-722(26)$~keV. The experimentally unknown mass excess of $^{27}$S was estimated to be 17030(400)~keV in AME2016, and we constrain this mass to be 17678(77)~keV based on the measured $β$-delayed two-proton energy. In the temperature region of $(0.06-0.3)$~GK, the $^{26}$Si$(p,γ)^{27}$P reaction rate determined in this work is significantly lower than the rate recommended in the reaction rate libraries, up to two orders of magnitude around 0.1~GK. The impact of these newly determined masses and well-constrained rate on the modeling of the explosive astrophysical scenarios has been explored by hydrodynamic nova and post-processing XRB models. No substantial change was found in the nova contribution to the synthesis of galactic $^{26}$Al or in the XRB energy generation rate, but we found that the calculated abundances of $^{26}$Al and $^{26}$Si at the last stage of XRB are increased by a factor of 2.4. We also conclude that $^{27}$S is not a significant waiting point in the rapid proton capture process.

Simultaneous measurement of beta-delayed proton and gamma emission of $^{26}$P for $^{25}$Al($p,γ$)$^{26}$Si reaction rate

$β$ decay of $^{26}$P was used to populate the astrophysically important $E_x=$5929.4(8) keV $J^π=3{^+}$ state of $^{26}$Si. Both $β$-delayed proton at 418(8) keV and gamma ray at 1742(2) keV emitted from this state were measured simultaneously for the first time with corresponding absolute intensities of 11.1(12)\% and 0.59(44)\%, respectively. Besides, shell model calculations with weakly bound effects were performed to investigate the decay properties of other resonant states and a spin-parity of $4^+$ rather than $0^+$ was favored for the $E_x=$5945.9(40) keV state. Combining the experimental results and theoretical calculations, $^{25}$Al($p,γ$)$^{26}$Si reaction rate in explosive hydrogen burning environments was calculated and compared with previous studies.

Cluster Decay of the High-lying excited states in $^{14}$C

A cluster-transfer experiment of $^9\rm{Be}(^9\rm{Be},^{14}\rm{C}\rightarrowα+^{10}\rm{Be})α$ at an incident energy of 45 MeV was carried out in order to investigate the molecular structure in high-lying resonant states in $^{14}$C. This reaction is of extremely large $Q$-value, making it an excellent case to select the reaction mechanism and the final states in outgoing nuclei. The high-lying resonances in $^{14}$C are reconstructed for three sets of well discriminated final states in $^{10}$Be. The results confirm the previous decay measurements with clearly improved decay-channel selections and show also a new state at 23.5(1) MeV. The resonant states at 22.4(3) and 24.0(3) MeV decay primarily into the typical molecular states at about 6 MeV in $^{10}$Be, indicating a well developed cluster structure in these high-lying states in $^{14}$C. Further measurements of more states of this kind are suggested.

The decay characteristic of $^{22}$Si and its ground-state mass significantly affected by three-nucleon forces

The decay of the proton-rich nucleus $^{22}$Si was studied by a silicon array coupled with germanium clover detectors. Nine charged-particle groups are observed and most of them are recognized as $β$-delayed proton emission. A charged-particle group at 5600 keV is identified experimentally as $β$-delayed two-proton emission from the isobaric analog state of $^{22}$Al. Another charged-particle emission without any $β$ particle at the low energy less than 300 keV is observed. The half-life of $^{22}$Si is determined as 27.5 (18) ms. The experimental results of $β$-decay of $^{22}$Si are compared and in nice agreement with shell-model calculations. The mass excess of the ground state of $^{22}$Si deduced from the experimental data shows that three-nucleon (3N) forces with repulsive contributions have significant effects on nuclei near the proton drip line.

The self-consistent analysis for sub-barrier fusion enhancement effect in Ca + Ca and Ni + Ni

The fusion dynamic mechanism of heavy-ions at energies near the Coulomb barrier is complicated and still not very clear up to now. Accordingly, a self-consistent method based on the CCFULL calculations has been developed and applied for an ingoing study of the effect of the positive Q-value neutron transfer (PQNT) channels in this work. The typical experimental fusion data of Ca + Ca and Ni + Ni is analyzed within the unified calculation scheme. The PQNT effect in near-barrier fusion is further confirmed based on the self-consistent analysis and extracted quantitatively.

Multi-seeded melt growth (MSMG) of bulk Y-Ba-Cu-O using thin-film seeds

Y-Ba-Cu-O (YBCO) and Sm-Ba-Cu-O (SmBCO) thin films have been used for the first time as heterogeneous seeds to multi-seed successfully the melt growth of bulk YBCO in a multi-seeded melt growth (MSMG) process. The use of thin film seeds, which may be prepared with highly controlled orientation (i.e. with a well-defined a-b plane and precisely known a-direction), is based on their superheating properties and reduces significantly contamination of the bulk sample by the seed material. A variety of grain boundaries were obtained by varying the angle between the seeds. Microstructural studies indicate that the extent of residual melt deposited at the grain boundary decreases with increasing grain boundary contact angle. It is established that the growth front proceeds continuously at the (110)/(110) grain boundary without trapping liquid, which leads to the formation of a clean grain boundary.
