Gravitational waveforms from inspiraling compact binaries in quadratic gravity and their parameterized post-Einstein characterization

We investigate gravitational waveforms from the inspiral phase of compact binary systems within the framework of quadratic gravity and map their deviations from general relativity into the parameterized post-Einstein (PPE) formalism to constrain the theory parameters. Quadratic gravity generically includes a massive spin-2 ghost, which leads to ill-defined energy and angular momentum fluxes. Following earlier proposals, we remove these unphysical features by imposing a constraint on the massive spin-2 mode, restricting it to propagate only the same polarizations of general relativity. Within the quadrupole approximation, we derive the radiative degrees of freedom, including massless and massive tensor modes, as well as a massive scalar field. Using the stationary phase approximation, we compute the Fourier-domain waveform of the massless tensor modes and extract the phase corrections. For small deviations from general relativity, we show that both the scalar and massive tensor modes can be consistently embedded into the PPE framework, extending previous results that considered only scalar fields. We derive updated constraints on the parameters of quadratic gravity, finding bounds improved by several orders of magnitude compared to existing limits. Finally, we present forecasts for the sensitivity of the Einstein Telescope to these deviations.

Higher-order gravity models: corrections up to cubic curvature invariants and inflation

We construct a higher-order gravity model including all corrections up to mass dimension six. Starting from the Jordan frame, we derive the field equations and specialize to the FLRW background, where the dynamics take the form of a four-dimensional autonomous system. Focusing on the $R+R^{2}+RR_{μν}R^{μν}$ case, we obtain linearized equations in the parameter $γ_{0}$ and analyze the resulting phase space. The model exhibits the main desirable features of an inflationary regime, with a slow-roll attractor and a stable critical point corresponding to the end of inflation. Analytical expressions for the scalar spectral index $n_{s}$ and the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$ show that the model is consistent with Planck, BICEP/Keck, and BAO data if $|γ_{0}|\lesssim 10^{-3}$. Moreover, negative values of $γ_{0}$ restore compatibility with recent ACT, Planck, and DESI results, suggesting that higher-order corrections may be relevant in refining inflationary cosmology.

Analytical warm dark matter power spectrum on small scales

Using the Reduced Relativistic Gas (RRG) model, we analytically determine the matter power spectrum for Warm Dark Matter (WDM) on small scales, $k>1\ h\text{/Mpc}$. The RRG is a simplified model for the ideal relativistic gas, but very accurate in the cosmological context. In another work, we have shown that, for typical allowed masses for dark matter particles, $m>5\ \text{keV}$, the higher order multipoles, $\ell>2$, in the Einstein-Boltzmann system of equations are negligible on scales $k<10\ h\text{/Mpc}$. Hence, we can follow the perturbations of WDM using the ideal fluid framework, with equation of state and sound speed of perturbations given by the RRG model. We derive a Mészáros like equation for WDM and solve it analytically in radiation, matter and dark energy dominated eras. Joining these solutions, we get an expression that determines the value of WDM perturbations as a function of redshift and wavenumber. Then we construct the matter power spectrum and transfer function of WDM on small scales and compare it to some results coming from Lyman-$α$ forest observations. Besides being a clear and pedagogical analytical development to understand the evolution of WDM perturbations, our power spectrum results are consistent with the observations considered and the other determinations of the degree of warmness of dark matter particles.

Higher-order extension of Starobinsky inflation: initial conditions, slow-roll regime, and reheating phase

The most current observational data corroborate the Starobinsky model as one of the strongest candidates in the description of an inflationary regime. Motivated by such success, extensions of the Starobinsky model have been increasingly recurrent in the literature. The theoretical justification for this is well grounded: higher-order gravities arise in high-energy physics in the search for the ultraviolet completeness of general relativity. In this paper, we propose to investigate the inflation due to the extension of the Starobinsky model characterized by the inclusion of the $R^{3}$ term. We make a complete analysis of the potential and phase space of the model, where we observe the existence of three regions with distinct dynamics for the scalar field. We can establish restrictive limits for the number of $e$-folds through a study of the reheating and by considering the usual couplings of the standard matter fields and gravity. Thereby, we duly confront our model with the observational data from Planck, BICEP3/Keck, and BAO. Finally, we discuss how the inclusion of the cubic term restricts the initial conditions necessary for the occurrence of a physical inflation.

Spherically Symmetric Solutions in Higher-Derivative Theories of Gravity

Higher-order theories of gravity have received much attention from several areas including quantum gravity, string theory and cosmology. This paper proposes a higher-order gravity whose action includes all curvature scalar terms up to the second-order corrections of general relativity, namely, $R^{2}$, $R^{3}$ and $R\square R$. Then, we explore spherically symmetric and static solutions in the weak-field regime and black holes context. All solutions in the weak-field regime due to a point mass are deduced, and by making a stability analysis of these solutions, we restrict them to Yukawa-type solutions. In regard to black hole solutions, we use the Lichnerovicz method to investigate the possibility of existence of non-Schwarzschild black holes. The results obtained show that non-Schwarzschild solutions might exist. However, for reasonable values of the parameters of the theory, its horizon radii are extremely small making macroscopic black holes different from Schwarzschild unfeasible.

Non-linear effects on radiation propagation around a charged compact object

The propagation of non-linear electromagnetic waves is carefully analyzed on a curved spacetime created by static spherically symmetric mass and charge distribution. We compute how non-linear electrodynamics affects the geodesic deviation and the redshift of photons propagating near this massive charged object. In the first order approximation, the effects of electromagnetic self-interaction can be distinguished from the usual Reissner-Nordström terms. In the particular case of Euler-Heisenberg effective Lagrangian, we find that these self-interaction effects might be important near extremal compact charged objects.

Observational constraints to a unified cosmological model

We propose a phenomenological unified model for dark matter and dark energy based on an equation of state parameter $w$ that scales with the $\arctan$ of the redshift. The free parameters of the model are three constants: $Ω_{b0}$, $α$ and $β$. Parameter $α$ dictates the transition rate between the matter dominated era and the accelerated expansion period. The ratio $β/ α$ gives the redshift of the equivalence between both regimes. Cosmological parameters are fixed by observational data from Primordial Nucleosynthesis (PN), Supernovae of the type Ia (SNIa), Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRB) and Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO). The calibration of the 138 GRBs events is performed using the 580 SNIa of the Union2.1 data set and a new set of 79 high-redshift GRBs is obtained. The various sets of data are used in different combinations to constraint the parameters through statistical analysis. The unified model is compared to the $Λ$CDM model and their differences are emphasized.

Thermodynamics of a Photon Gas in Nonlinear Electrodynamics

In this paper we analyze the thermodynamic properties of a photon gas under the influence of a background electromagnetic field in the context of any nonlinear electrodynamics. Neglecting the self-interaction of photons, we obtain a general expression for the grand canonical potential. Particularizing for the case when the background field is uniform, we determine the pressure and the energy density for the photon gas. Although the pressure and the energy density change when compared with the standard case, the relationship between them remains unaltered, namely $ρ=3p$. Finally, we apply the developed formulation to the cases of Heisenberg-Euler and Born-Infeld nonlinear electrodynamics. For the Heisenberg-Euler case, we show that our formalism recover the results obtained with the $2$-loop thermal effective action approach.

Observational constraints to a phenomenological $f\left( R,\nabla R\right) $-model

This paper analyses the cosmological consequences of a modified theory of gravity whose action integral is built from a linear combination of the Ricci scalar $R$ and a quadratic term in the covariant derivative of $R$. The resulting Friedmann equations are of the fifth-order in the Hubble function. These equations are solved numerically for a flat space section geometry and pressureless matter. The cosmological parameters of the higher-order model are fit using SN Ia data and X-ray gas mass fraction in galaxy clusters. The best-fit present-day $t_{0}$ values for the deceleration parameter, jerk and snap are given. The coupling constant $β$\ of the model is not univocally determined by the data fit, but partially constrained by it. Density parameter $Ω_{m0}$ is also determined and shows weak correlation with the other parameters. The model allows for two possible future scenarios: there may be either a premature Big Rip or a Rebouncing event depending on the set of values in the space of parameters. The analysis towards the past performed with the best-fit parameters shows that the model is not able to accommodate a matter-dominated stage required to the formation of structure.

Cosmological analytic solutions with reduced relativistic gas

In this paper one examine analytical solutions for flat and non-flat universes composed by four components namely hot matter (ultra-relativistic), warm matter (relativistic), cold matter (non-relativistic) and cosmological constant. The warm matter is treated as a reduced relativistic gas and the other three components are treated in the usual way. The solutions achieved contains one, two or three components of which one component is of warm matter type. A solution involving all the four components was not found.

Realistic Cyclic Magnetic Universe

This work presents a complete cyclic cosmological scenario based on nonlinear magnetic field. It is constructed a model composed by five fluids namely baryonic matter, dark matter, radiation, neutrinos and a cosmological magnetic field. The first four fluids are treated in the standard way and the fifth fluid, the magnetic field, is described by a nonlinear electrodynamics. The free parameters are fitted by observational data (SNIa, CMB, extragalactic magnetic fields, etc) and by simple theoretical considerations. As result arises a cyclic cosmological model which preserves the main successes of standard big bang model and solve some other problems like the initial singularity, the present acceleration and the Big Rip.

Cosmic acceleration from second order gauge gravity

We construct a phenomenological theory of gravitation based on a second order gauge formulation for the Lorentz group. The model presents a long-range modification for the gravitational field leading to a cosmological model provided with an accelerated expansion at recent times. We estimate the model parameters using observational data and verify that our estimative for the age of the Universe is of the same magnitude than the one predicted by the standard model. The transition from the decelerated expansion regime to the accelerated one occurs recently (at $\sim9.3\;Gyr$).

How can one probe Podolsky Electrodynamics?

We investigate the possibility of detecting the Podolsky generalized electrodynamics constant $a$. First we analyze an ion interferometry apparatus proposed by B. Neyenhuis, et al (Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, (2007) 200401) who looked for deviations from Coulomb's inverse-square law in the context of Proca model. Our results show that this experiment has not enough precision for measurements of $a$. In order to set up bounds for $a$ we investigate the influence of Podolsky's electrostatic potential on the ground state of the Hydrogen atom. The value of the ground state energy of the Hydrogen atom requires Podolsky's constant to be smaller than 5.6 fm, or in energy scales larger than 35.51 MeV.

Gauge Formulation for Higher Order Gravity

This work is an application of the second order gauge theory for the Lorentz group, where a description of the gravitational interaction is obtained which includes derivatives of the curvature. We analyze the form of the second field strenght, $G=\partial F +fAF$, in terms of geometrical variables. All possible independent Lagrangians constructed with quadratic contractions of $F$ and quadratic contractions of $G$ are analyzed. The equations of motion for a particular Lagrangian, which is analogous to Podolsky's term of his Generalized Electrodynamics, are calculated. The static isotropic solution in the linear approximation was found, exhibiting the regular Newtonian behaviour at short distances as well as a meso-large distance modification.
