Moduli of unstable bundles of HN-length two with fixed algebra of endomorphisms

Let X be a smooth irreducible complex projective curve of genus g > 1. In this paper, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for an unstable bundle of HN-lenght 2 to have a particular algebra of endomorphisms. Then, fixing the dimension of the algebra of endomorphisms we obtain a stratification of the moduli scheme such that each strata is a coarse moduli space. A particular case of interest is when the unstable bundles are simple. In that case the moduli space is fine. Topological properties of those moduli spaces are described and will depend on the generality of the curve X. Such results differ from the corresponding results for the moduli space of stable bundles, where non-emptiness, dimension etc. are independent of the curve.

On Chow Stability for algebraic curves

In the last decades there have been introduced different concepts of stability for projective varieties. In this paper we give a natural and intrinsic criterion of the Chow, and Hilbert, stability for complex irreducible smooth projective curves C⊂PnC\subset \mathbb P ^n. Namely, if the restriction TP∣CnT\mathbb P_{|C} ^n of the tangent bundle of Pn\mathbb P ^n to CC is stable then C⊂PnC\subset \mathbb P ^n is Chow stable, and hence Hilbert stable. We apply this criterion to describe a smooth open set of the irreducible component HilbChP(t),sHilb^{P(t),s}_{Ch} of the Hilbert scheme of Pn\mathbb{P} ^n containing the generic smooth Chow-stable curve of genus gg and degree d>g+n−⌊gn+1⌋.d>g+n-\left\lfloor\frac{g}{n+1}\right\rfloor. Moreover, we describe the quotient stack of such curves. Similar results are obtained for the locus of Hilbert stable curves.

On linear systems and a conjecture of D. C. Butler

Let CC be a smooth irreducible projective curve of genus gg and LL a line bundle of degree dd generated by a linear subspace VV of H0(L)H^0(L) of dimension n+1n+1. We prove a conjecture of D. C. Butler on the semistability of the kernel of the evaluation map V⊗OC→LV\otimes{\mathcal O}_C\to L and obtain new results on the stability of this kernel. The natural context for this problem is the theory of coherent systems on curves and our techniques involve wall crossing formulae in this theory.

On the Hilbert scheme of the moduli space of vector bundles over an algebraic curve

Let M(n,ξ)M(n,ξ) be the moduli space of stable vector bundles of rank n≥3n\geq 3 and fixed determinant ξξ over a smooth projective algebraic curve XX over C\mathbb{C} of genus g≥4.g\geq 4. We use the gonality of the curve and rr-Hecke morphisms to describe a smooth open set and to compute the dimension of a component of the Hilbert scheme HilbM(n,ξ)Hilb_{M(n,ξ)}, of the scheme of morphisms Mor(G,M(n,ξ))Mor(\mathbb{G},M(n,ξ)) and of the moduli space MX×G M_{X \times \mathbb{G}} of stable bundles over X×G,X\times \mathbb{G}, where G\mathbb{G} is the Grassmannian G(n−r,Cn)\mathbb{G}(n-r,\mathbb{C}^n). In particular, we prove that dim⁡MorP(P2,M(3,ξ))=8g−7\dim Mor_P(\mathbb{P}^2,M(3,ξ))=8g-7 and we give a sufficient condition for Mor2ns(P1,M(n,ξ))Mor_{2ns}(\mathbb{P}^1,M(n,ξ)) to be non-empty with s≥1.s\geq 1.

A stratification of the moduli space of vector bundles on curves

Let EE be a vector bundle of rank r≥2r\geq 2 on a smooth projective curve CC of genus g≥2g \geq 2 over an algebraically closed field KK of arbitrary characteristic. For any integer with 1≤k≤r−11\le k\le r-1 we define $${\se}_k(E):=k°E-r\max°F.$$ where the maximum is taken over all subbundles FF of rank kk of EE. The sk{s}_k gives a stratification of the moduli space M(r,d){\cal M}(r,d) of stable vector bundles of rank rr and degree on dd on CC into locally closed subsets ${\calM}(r,d,k,s)$ according to the value of ss and kk. There is a component M0(r,d,k,s){\cal M}^0(r,d,k,s) of M(r,d,k,s){\cal M}(r,d,k,s) distinguish by the fact that a general E∈M0(r,d,k,s)E\in {\cal M}^0(r,d,k,s) admits a stable subbundle FF such that E/FE/F is also stable. We prove: {\it For g≥r+12g\ge \frac{r+1}{2} and 0<s≤k(r−k)(g−1)+(r+1)0<s\leq k(r-k)(g-1) +(r+1), s≡kdmod  r,s\equiv kd \mod r, M0(r,d,k,s){\cal M}^0(r,d,k,s) is non-empty,and its component M0(r,d,k,s){\cal M}^0(r,d,k,s) is of dimension} dim⁡M0(r,d,k,s)={(r2+k2−rk)(g−1)+s−1s<k(r−k)(g−1)ifr2(g−1)+1s≥k(r−k)(g−1)\dim {\cal M}^0(r,d,k,s)=\left\{\begin{array}{lcl} (r^2+k^2-rk)(g-1)+s-1& &s<k(r-k)(g-1) &{\rm if}& r^2(g-1)+1& & s\ge k(r-k)(g-1)\end{array}\right.
