Dirac, Majorana, Weyl in 4d

This is a review of some elementary properties of Dirac, Weyl and Majorana spinors in 4d. We focus in particular on the differences between massless Dirac and Majorana fermions, on one side, and Weyl fermions, on the other. We review in detail the definition of their effective actions, when coupled to (vector and axial) gauge fields, and revisit the corresponding anomalies using the Feynman diagram method with different regularizations. Among various well known results we stress in particular the regularization independence in perturbative approaches, while not all the regularizations fit the non-perturbative ones. As for anomalies, we highlight in particular one perhaps not so well known feature: the rigid relation between chiral and trace anomalies.

HS in flat spacetime. YM-like models

We introduce and analyse a few examples of massless higher spin theories in Minkowski spacetime. They are defined in terms of master fields, i.e. fields defined in the whole phase space. More specifically we introduce the HS YM-like theories in any dimension and HS CS-like ones in any odd dimension, in both Abelian and non-Abelian cases. These theories are invariant under gauge transformations that include ordinary gauge transformations, diffeomorphisms and HS gauge transformations. They are not at first sight invariant under local Lorentz transformations, but we show how this invariance can be recovered. We explicitly write down the actions, the eom's as well as the (infinite many) conservation laws in both HS YM and HS CS cases. Then we focus in particular on the HS YM models, we illustrate their $L_\infty$ structure and perform their BRST quantization. We also introduce HS scalar and fermion master fields and show that the Higgs mechanism can be realized also in the case of HS YM theories. Next we start the discussion of the perturbative approach to quantization by means of Feynman diagrams. We show that the dependence on the conjugate momentum can be absorbed in a redefinition of the component fields, the coupling and the coordinates. In such a new frozen momentum framework, we argue that only physical states propagate in physical amplitudes and carry out a sample calculation.

Elliptic Genera and q-Series Development in Analysis, String Theory, and N=2 Superconformal Field Theory

In this article we examine the Ruelle type spectral functions $\cR(s)$,which define an overall description of the content of the work. We investigate the Gopakumar-Vafa reformulation of the string partition functions, describe the N=2 Landau-Ginzburg model in terms of Ruelle type spectral functions. Furthermore, we discuss the basic properties satisfied by elliptic genera in N=2 theories, construct the functional equations for $\cR(s)$, and analyze the modular transformation laws for the elliptic genus of the Landau-Ginzburg model and study their properties in details.

Massive fermion model in 3d and higher spin currents

We analyze the 3d free massive fermion theory coupled to external sources. The presence of a mass explicitly breaks parity invariance. We calculate two- and three-point functions of a gauge current and the energy momentum tensor and, for instance, obtain the well-known result that in the IR limit (but also in the UV one) we reconstruct the relevant CS action. We then couple the model to higher spin currents and explicitly work out the spin 3 case. In the UV limit we obtain an effective action which was proposed many years ago as a possible generalization of spin 3 CS action. In the IR limit we derive a different higher spin action. This analysis can evidently be generalized to higher spins. We also discuss the conservation and properties of the correlators we obtain in the intermediate steps of our derivation.

New Spinor Fields on Lorentzian 7-Manifolds

This paper deals with the classification of spinor fields according to the bilinear covariants in 7 dimensions. The previously investigated Riemannian case is characterized by either one spinor field class, in the real case of Majorana spinors, or three non-trivial classes in the most general complex case. In this paper we show that by imposing appropriate conditions on spinor fields in 7d manifolds with Lorentzian metric, the formerly obtained obstructions for new classes of spinor fields can be circumvented. New spinor fields classes are then explicitly constructed. In particular, on 7-manifolds with asymptotically flat black hole background, these spinors can define a generalized current density which further defines a time Killing vector at the spatial infinity.

Elliptic Genera and Characteristic $q$-Series of Superconformal Field Theory

We analyze the characteristic series, the $KO$ series and the series associated with the Witten genus, and their analytic forms as the $q$-analogs of classical special functions (in particular $q$-analog of the beta integral and the gamma function). $q$-series admit an analytic interpretation in terms of the spectral Ruelle functions, and their relations to appropriate elliptic modular forms can be described. We show that there is a deep correspondence between the characteristic series of the Witten genus and $KO$ characteristic series, on one side, and the denominator identities and characters of $N=2$ superconformal algebras, and the affine Lie (super)algebras on the other. We represent the characteristic series in the form of double series using the Hecke-Rogers modular identity.

Generalized q-deformed Correlation Functions as Spectral Functions of Hyperbolic Geometry

We analyse the role of vertex operator algebra and 2d amplitudes from the point of view of the representation theory of infinite dimensional Lie algebras, MacMahon and Ruelle functions. A p-dimensional MacMahon function is the generating function of p-dimensional partitions of integers. These functions can be represented as amplitudes of a two-dimensional c=1 CFT. In this paper we show that p-dimensional MacMahon functions can be rewritten in terms of Ruelle spectral functions, whose spectrum is encoded in the Patterson-Selberg function of three dimensional hyperbolic geometry.

Spinor Fields Classification in Arbitrary Dimensions and New Classes of Spinor Fields on 7-Manifolds

A classification of spinor fields according to the associated bilinear covariants is constructed in arbitrary dimensions and metric signatures, generalizing Lounesto's 4D spinor field classification. In such a generalized classification a basic role is played by the geometric Fierz identities. In 4D Minkowski spacetime the standard bilinear covariants can be either null or non-null -- with the exception of the current density which is invariably different from zero for physical reasons -- and sweep all types of spinor fields, including Dirac, Weyl, Majorana and more generally flagpoles, flag-dipoles and dipole spinor fields. To obtain an analogous classification in higher dimensions we use the Fierz identities, which constrain the covariant bilinears in the spinor fields and force some of them to vanish. A generalized graded Fierz aggregate is moreover obtained in such a context simply from the completeness relation. We analyze the particular and important case of Riemannian 7-manifolds, where the Majorana spinor fields turn out to have a quite special place. In particular, at variance with spinor fields in 4D Minkowski spacetime that are classified in six disjoint classes, spinors in Riemannian 7-manifolds are shown to be classified, according to the bilinear covariants: (a) in just one class, in the real case of Majorana spinors; (b) in four classes, in the most general case. Much like new classes of spinor fields in 4D Minkowski spacetime have been evincing new possibilities in physics, we think these new classes of spinor fields in seven dimensions are, in particular, potential candidates for new solutions in the compactification of supergravity on a seven-dimensional manifold and its exotic versions.

The energy of the analytic lump solution in SFT

In a previous paper a method was proposed to find exact analytic solutions of open string field theory describing lower dimensional lumps, by incorporating in string field theory an exact renormalization group flow generated by a relevant operator in a worldsheet CFT. In this paper we compute the energy of one such solution, which is expected to represent a D24 brane. We show, both numerically and analytically, that its value corresponds to the theoretically expected one.

Gravitational Chern-Simons terms and black hole entropy. Global aspects

We discuss the topological and global gauge properties of the formula for a black hole entropy due to a purely gravitational Chern-Simons term. We study under what topological and geometrical conditions this formula is well-defined. To this end we have to analyze the global properties of the Chern-Simons term itself and the quantization of its coupling. We show that in some cases the coupling quantization may interfere with the well-definiteness of the entropy formula.

Partition Functions for Quantum Gravity, Black Holes, Elliptic Genera and Lie Algebra Homologies

There is a remarkable connection between quantum generating functions of field theory and formal power series associated with dimensions of chains and homologies of suitable Lie algebras. We discuss the homological aspects of this connection with its applications to partition functions of the minimal three-dimensional gravities in the space-time asymptotic to AdS3, which also describe the three-dimensional Euclidean black holes, the pure N = 1 supergravity, and a sigma model on N-fold generalized symmetric products. We also consider in the same context elliptic genera of some supersymmetric sigma models. These examples can be considered as a straightforward application of the machinery of modular forms and spectral functions (with values in the congruence subgroup of SL(2, Z)) to partition functions represented by means of formal power series that encode Lie algebra properties.

Relevant Deformations in Open String Field Theory: a Simple Solution for Lumps

We propose a remarkably simple solution of cubic open string field theory which describes inhomogeneous tachyon condensation. The solution is in one-to-one correspondence with the IR fixed point of the RG-flow generated in the two--dimensional world-sheet theory by integrating a relevant operator with mild enough OPE on the boundary. It is shown how the closed string overlap correctly captures the shift in the closed string one point function between the UV and the IR limits of the flow. Examples of lumps in non-compact and compact transverse directions are given.

BRST, anti-BRST and their geometry

We continue the comparison between the field theoretical and geometrical approaches to the gauge field theories of various types, by deriving their Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) and anti-BRST trasformation properties and comparing them with the geometrical properties of the bundles and gerbes. In particular, we provide the geometrical interpretation of the so--called Curci-Ferrari conditions that are invoked for the absolute anticommutativity of the BRST and anti-BRST symmetry transformations in the context of non-Abelian 1-form gauge theories as well as Abelian gauge theory that incorporates a 2-form gauge field. We also carry out the explicit construction of the 3-form gauge fields and compare it with the geometry of 2--gerbes.

Ghost story. III. Back to ghost number zero

After having defined a 3-strings midpoint-inserted vertex for the bc system, we analyze the relation between gh=0 states (wedge states) and gh=3 midpoint duals. We find explicit and regular relations connecting the two objects. In the case of wedge states this allows us to write down a spectral decomposition for the gh=0 Neumann matrices, despite the fact that they are not commuting with the matrix representation of K1. We thus trace back the origin of this noncommutativity to be a consequence of the imaginary poles of the wedge eigenvalues in the complex k-plane. With explicit reconstruction formulas at hand for both gh=0 and gh=3, we can finally show how the midpoint vertex avoids this intrinsic noncommutativity at gh=0, making everything as simple as the zero momentum matter sector.

Hawking Fluxes, $W_\infty$ Algebra and Anomalies

We complete the analysis started in [arXiv:0804.0198] of the Hawking radiation calculated by means of anomaly techniques. We concentrate on a static radially symmetric BH, reduced to two dimensions. We compare the two methods used to derive the integrated Hawking radiation, based on the trace and diffeomorphism anomaly, respectively, and show that they can be reduced to the same basic elements. We then concentrate on higher moments of the Hawking radiation and on higher spin currents, and show that, similarly to trace anomalies, also diffeomorphism anomalies are absent from the conservation laws of higher spin currents. We show that the predictivity of the method is due to the $W_\infty$ current algebra underlying the effective model that describes matter around the black hole.

Integrable Structures in String Field Theory

We give a simple proof that the Neumann coefficients of surface states in Witten's SFT satisfy the Hirota equations for dispersionless KP hierarchy. In a similar way we show that the Neumann coefficients for the three string vertex in the same theory obey the Hirota equations of the dispersionless Toda Lattice hierarchy. We conjecture that the full (dispersive) Toda Lattice hierachy and, even more attractively a two--matrix model, may underlie open SFT.

Heterotic Matrix String Theory and Riemann Surfaces

We extend the results found for Matrix String Theory to Heterotic Matrix String Theory, i.e. to a 2d O(N) SYM theory with chiral (anomaly free) matter and N=(8,0) supersymmetry. We write down the instanton equations for this theory and solve them explicitly. The solutions are characterized by branched coverings of the basis cylinder, i.e. by compact Riemann surfaces with punctures. We show that in the strong coupling limit the action becomes the heterotic string action plus a free Maxwell action. Moreover the amplitude based on a Riemann surface with p punctures and h handles is proportional to g^{2-2h-p}, as expected for the heterotic string interaction theory with string coupling g_s=1/g.

On the string interpretation of M(atrix) theory

It has been proposed recently that, in the framework of M(atrix) theory, N=8 supersymmetric U(N) Yang-Mills theory in 1+1 dimensions gives rise to type IIA long string configurations. We point out that the quantum moduli space of $SYM_{1+1}$ gives rise to two quantum numbers, which fit very well into the M(atrix) theory. The two quantum numbers become familiar if one switches to a IIB picture, where they represent configurations of D-strings and fundamental strings. We argue that, due to the SL(2,Z) symmetry, of the IIB theory, such quantum numbers must represent configurations that are present also in the IIA framework.

Multi-Matrix Models: Integrability Properties and Topological Content

We analyze multi--matrix chain models. They can be considered as multi--component Toda lattice hierarchies subject to suitable coupling conditions. The extension of such models to include extra discrete states requires a weak form of integrability. The discrete states of the $q$--matrix model are organized in representations of $sl_q$. We solve exactly the Gaussian--type models, of which we compute several all-genus correlators. Among the latter models one can classify also the discretized $c=1$ string theory, which we revisit using Toda lattice hierarchy methods. Finally we analyze the topological field theory content of the $2q$--matrix models: we define primary fields (which are $\infty^q$), metrics and structure constants and prove that they satisfy the axioms of topological field theories. We outline a possible method to extract interesting topological field theories with a finite number of primaries.

Multi-matrix models without continuum limit

We derive the discrete linear systems associated to multi--matrix models, the corresponding discrete hierarchies and the appropriate coupling conditions. We also obtain the $W_{1+\infty}$ constraints on the partition function. We then apply to multi--matrix models the technique, developed in previous papers, of extracting hierarchies of differential equations from lattice ones without passing through a continuum limit. In a q--matrix model we find 2q coupled differential systems. The corresponding differential hierarchies are particular versions of the KP hierarchy. We show that the multi--matrix partition function is a $τ$--function of these hierarchies. We discuss a few examples in the dispersionless limit.

Free field representation of Toda field theories

We study the following problem: can a classical $sl_n$ Toda field theory be represented by means of free bosonic oscillators through a Drinfeld--Sokolov construction? We answer affirmatively in the case of a cylindrical space--time and for real hyperbolic solutions of the Toda field equations. We establish in fact a one--to--one correspondence between such solutions and the space of free left and right bosonic oscillators with coincident zero modes. We discuss the same problem for real singular solutions with non hyperbolic monodromy.

Integrable Discrete Linear Systems and One-Matrix Model

In this paper we analyze one-matrix models by means of the associated discrete linear systems. We see that the consistency conditions of the discrete linear system lead to the Virasoro constraints. The linear system is endowed with gauge invariances. We show that invariance under time-independent gauge transformations entails the integrability of the model, while the double scaling limit is connected with a time-dependent gauge transformation. We derive the continuum version of the discrete linear system, we prove that the partition function is actually the $τ$-function of the KdV hierarchy and that the linear system completely determines the Virasoro constraints.
