Robust Finite Elements for linearized Magnetohydrodynamics

We introduce a pressure robust Finite Element Method for the linearized Magnetohydrodynamics equations in three space dimensions, which is provably quasi-robust also in the presence of high fluid and magnetic Reynolds numbers. The proposed scheme uses a non-conforming BDM approach with suitable DG terms for the fluid part, combined with an $H^1$-conforming choice for the magnetic fluxes. The method introduces also a specific CIP-type stabilization associated to the coupling terms. Finally, the theoretical result are further validated by numerical experiments.

Equilibrium analysis of an immersed rigid leaflet by the virtual element method

We study, both theoretically and numerically, the equilibrium of a hinged rigid leaflet with an attached rotational spring, immersed in a stationary incompressible fluid within a rigid channel. Through a careful investigation of the properties of the functional describing the angular momentum exerted by the fluid on the leaflet (which depends on both the leaflet angular position and its thickness), we identify sufficient conditions on the spring stiffness function for the existence (and uniqueness) of equilibrium positions. We propose a numerical technique that exploits the mesh flexibility of the Virtual Element Method (VEM). A (polygonal) computational mesh is generated by cutting a fixed background grid with the leaflet geometry, and the problem is then solved with stable VEM Stokes elements of degrees $1$ and $2$ combined with a bisection algorithm. We present a large array of numerical experiments to document the accuracy and robustness with respect to degenerate geometry of the proposed methodology.

Curvilinear Virtual Elements for 2D solid mechanics applications

In the present work we generalize the curvilinear Virtual Element technology, introduced for a simple linear scalar problem in a previous work, to generic 2D solid mechanic problems in small deformations. Such generalization also includes the development of a novel Virtual Element space for displacements that contains rigid body motions. Our approach can accept a generic black-box (elastic or inelastic) constitutive algorithm and, in addition, can make use of curved edges thus leading to an exact approximation of the geometry. Rigorous theoretical interpolation properties for the new space on curvilinear elements are derived. We undergo an extensive numerical test campaign, both on elastic and inelastic problems, to assess the behavior of the scheme. The results are very promising and underline the advantages of the curved VEM approach over the standard one in the presence of curved geometries.

Basic principles of hp Virtual Elements on quasiuniform meshes

In the present paper we initiate the study of $hp$ Virtual Elements. We focus on the case with uniform polynomial degree across the mesh and derive theoretical convergence estimates that are explicit both in the mesh size $h$ and in the polynomial degree $p$ in the case of finite Sobolev regularity. Exponential convergence is proved in the case of analytic solutions. The theoretical convergence results are validated in numerical experiments. Finally, an initial study on the possible choice of local basis functions is included.

Virtual Element Methods for general second order elliptic problems on polygonal meshes

We consider the discretization of a boundary value problem for a general linear second-order elliptic operator with smooth coefficients using the Virtual Element approach. As in [59] the problem is supposed to have a unique solution, but the associated bilinear form is not supposed to be coercive. Contrary to what was previously done for Virtual Element Methods (as for instance in [9]), we use here, in a systematic way, the L^2-projection operators as designed in [1]. In particular, the present method does not reduce to the original Virtual Element Method of [9] for simpler problems as the classical Laplace operator (apart from the lowest order cases). Numerical experiments show the accuracy and the robustness of the method, and they show as well that a simple-minded extension of the method in [9] to the case of variable coefficients produces, in general, sub-optimal results.

An isogeometric method for the Reissner-Mindlin plate bending problem

We present a new isogeometric method for the discretization of the Reissner-Mindlin plate bending problem. The proposed scheme follows a recent theoretical framework that makes possible to construct a space of smooth discrete deflections $W_h$ and a space of smooth discrete rotations $\Rots_h$ such that the Kirchhoff contstraint is exactly satisfied at the limit. Therefore we obtain a formulation which is natural from the theoretical/mechanical viewpoint and locking free by construction.
