Anomalous buoyancy of quantum bubbles in immiscible Bose mixtures

Buoyancy is a well-known effect in immiscible binary Bose-Einstein condensates. Depending on the differential confinement experienced by the two components, a bubble of one component sitting at the center of the other eventually floats to the surface, around which it spreads either totally or partially. We discuss how quantum fluctuations may significantly change the volume and position of immiscible bubbles. We consider the particular case of two miscible components, forming a pseudo-scalar bubble condensate with enhanced quantum fluctuations (quantum bubble), immersed in a bath provided by a third component, with which they are immiscible. We show that in such a peculiar effective binary mixture, quantum fluctuations change the equilibrium of pressures that define the bubble volume and modify as well the criterion for buoyancy. Once buoyancy sets in, in contrast to the mean-field case, quantum fluctuations may place the bubble at an intermediate position between the center and the surface. At the surface, the quantum bubble may transition into a floating self-bound droplet.

Universal Properties of Anisotropic Dipolar Bosons in Two Dimensions

The energy of ultra-dilute quantum many-body systems is known to exhibit a universal dependence on the gas parameter $x=n a_0^d$, with $n$ the density, $d$ the dimensionality of the space ($d=1,2,3$) and $a_0$ the $s$-wave scattering length. The universal regime typically extends up to $x\approx 0.001$, while at larger values specific details of the interaction start to be relevant and different model potentials lead to different results. Dipolar systems are peculiar in this regard since the anisotropy of the interaction makes $a_0$ depend on the polarization angle $α$, so different combinations of $n$ and $α$ can lead to the same value of the gas parameter $x$. In this work we analyze the scaling properties of dipolar bosons in two dimensions as a function of the density and polarization dependent scattering length up to very large values of the gas parameter $x$. Using Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) methods we study the energy and the main structural and coherence properties of the ground state of a gas of dipolar bosons by varying the density and scattering length for fixed gas parameter. We find that the dipolar interaction shows relevant scaling laws up to unusually large values of $x$ that hold almost to the boundaries in the phase diagram where a transition to a stripe phase takes place.

Strong coupling Bose polarons in a two-dimensional gas

We study the properties of Bose polarons in two dimensions using quantum Monte Carlo techniques. Results for the binding energy, the effective mass, and the quasiparticle residue are reported for a typical strength of interactions in the gas and for a wide range of impurity-gas coupling strengths. A lower and an upper branch of the quasiparticle exist. The lower branch corresponds to an attractive polaron and spans from the regime of weak coupling where the impurity acts as a small density perturbation of the surrounding medium to deep bound states which involve many particles from the bath and extend as far as the healing length. The upper branch corresponds to an excited state where due to repulsion a low-density bubble forms around the impurity but might be unstable against decay into many-body bound states. Interaction effects strongly affect the quasiparticle properties of the polaron. In particular, in the strongly correlated regime, the impurity features a vanishing quasiparticle residue, signaling the transition from an almost free quasiparticle to a bound state involving many atoms from the bath.

The Bose polaron problem: effect of mass imbalance on binding energy

By means of Quantum Monte Carlo methods we calculate the binding energy of an impurity immersed in a Bose-Einstein condensate at T = 0. The focus is on the attractive branch of the Bose polaron and on the role played by the mass imbalance between the impurity and the surrounding particles. For an impurity resonantly coupled to the bath, we investigate the dependence of the binding energy on the mass ratio and on the interaction strength within the medium. In particular, we determine the equation of state in the case of a static (infinite mass) impurity, where three-body correlations are irrelevant and the result is expected to be a universal function of the gas parameter. For the mass ratio corresponding to $^{40}$K impurities in a gas of $^{87}$Rb atoms we provide an explicit comparison with the experimental findings of a recent study carried out at JILA.

Impurity in a Bose-Einstein condensate: study of the attractive and repulsive branch using quantum Monte-Carlo methods

We investigate the properties of an impurity immersed in a dilute Bose gas at zero temperature using quantum Monte-Carlo methods. The interactions between bosons are modeled by a hard sphere potential with scattering length $a$, whereas the interactions between the impurity and the bosons are modeled by a short-range, square-well potential where both the sign and the strength of the scattering length $b$ can be varied by adjusting the well depth. We characterize the attractive and the repulsive polaron branch by calculating the binding energy and the effective mass of the impurity. Furthermore, we investigate structural properties of the bath, such as the impurity-boson contact parameter and the change of the density profile around the impurity. At the unitary limit of the impurity-boson interaction, we find that the effective mass of the impurity remains smaller than twice its bare mass, while the binding energy scales with $\hbar^2n^{2/3}/m$, where $n$ is the density of the bath and $m$ is the common mass of the impurity and the bosons in the bath. The implications for the phase diagram of binary Bose-Bose mixtures at small concentrations are also discussed.

Momentum-energy tensor associated to the quasiparticles in anisotropic superconductors

From a Lagrangian density for the Bogoliubov de Gennes equations in anisotropic superconductors, we find the momentum-energy tensor associated to the quasiparticles of the system. For this, we make infinitesimal translations on both space and time and we use the Noether's theorem. We prove that beyond to the usual terms associated to the electron-hole dynamic in electromagnetic potentials, appears terms that involves the pair potential and that are obtained from the coupling of the electron-like and hole-like quasiparticles.
