Frontiers of Quantum Gravity: shared challenges, converging directions

Understanding the quantum nature of spacetime and gravity remains one of the most ambitious goals of theoretical physics. It promises to provide key new insights into fundamental particle theory, astrophysics, cosmology and the foundations of physics. Despite this common goal, the community of quantum gravity researchers is sometimes seen as divided into sub-communities working on different, mutually exclusive approaches. In practice however, recent years have shown the emergence of common techniques, results and physical ideas arising from different sub-communities, suggesting exciting new prospects for collaboration and interaction between traditionally distinct approaches. In this White Paper we discuss some of the common themes which have seen a growing interest from various directions, and argue that focusing on them will help the quantum gravity community as a whole towards shared objectives.

A Bound on Thermal Relativistic Correlators at Large Spacelike Momenta

We consider thermal Wightman correlators in a relativistic quantum field theory in the limit where the spatial momenta of the insertions become large while their frequencies stay fixed. We show that, in this limit, the size of these correlators is bounded by $e^{-βR}$, where $R$ is the radius of the smallest sphere that contains the polygon formed by the momenta. We show that perturbative quantum field theories can saturate this bound through suitably high-order loop diagrams. We also consider holographic theories in $d$-spacetime dimensions, where we show that the leading two-point function of generalized free-fields saturates the bound in $d = 2$ and is below the bound for $d > 2$. We briefly discuss interactions in holographic theories and conclude with a discussion of several open problems.

Probing typical black hole microstates

We investigate the possibility that the geometry dual to a typical AdS black hole microstate corresponds to the extended AdS-Schwarzschild geometry, including a region spacelike to the exterior. We argue that this region can be described by the mirror operators, a set of state-dependent operators in the dual CFT. We probe the geometry of a typical state by considering state-dependent deformations of the CFT Hamiltonian, which have an interpretation as a one-sided analogue of the Gao-Jafferis-Wall traversable wormhole protocol for typical states. We argue that the validity of the conjectured bulk geometry requires that out-of-time-order correlators of simple CFT operators on typical pure states must exhibit the same chaotic effects as thermal correlators at scrambling time. This condition is related to the question of whether the product of operators separated by scrambling time obey the Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis. We investigate some of these statements in the SYK model and discuss similarities with state-dependent perturbations of pure states in the SYK model previously considered by Kourkoulou and Maldacena. Finally, we discuss how the mirror operators can be used to implement an analogue of the Hayden-Preskill protocol.

A toy model of black hole complementarity

We consider the algebra of simple operators defined in a time band in a CFT with a holographic dual. When the band is smaller than the light crossing time of AdS, an entire causal diamond in the center of AdS is separated from the band by a horizon. We show that this algebra obeys a version of the Reeh-Schlieder theorem: the action of the algebra on the CFT vacuum can approximate any low energy state in the CFT arbitrarily well, but no operator within the algebra can exactly annihilate the vacuum. We show how to relate local excitations in the complement of the central diamond to simple operators in the band. Local excitations within the diamond are invisible to the algebra of simple operators in the band by causality, but can be related to complicated operators called "precursors". We use the Reeh-Schlieder theorem to write down a simple and explicit formula for these precursors on the boundary. We comment on the implications of our results for black hole complementarity and the emergence of bulk locality from the boundary.

Comments on the Necessity and Implications of State-Dependence in the Black Hole Interior

We revisit the "state-dependence" of the map that we proposed recently between bulk operators in the interior of a large AdS black hole and operators in the boundary CFT. By refining recent versions of the information paradox, we show that this feature is necessary for the CFT to successfully describe local physics behind the horizon --- not only for single-sided black holes but even in the eternal black hole. We show that state-dependence is invisible to an infalling observer who cannot differentiate these operators from those of ordinary quantum effective field theory. Therefore the infalling observer does not observe any violations of quantum mechanics. We successfully resolve a large class of potential ambiguities in our construction. We analyze states where the CFT is entangled with another system and show that the ER=EPR conjecture emerges from our construction in a natural and precise form. We comment on the possible semi-classical origins of state-dependence.

Local Operators in the Eternal Black Hole

We show that, in the AdS/CFT correspondence, states obtained by Hamiltonian evolution of the thermofield doubled state are also dual to an eternal black hole geometry, which is glued to the boundary with a time shift generated by a large diffeomorphism. We describe gauge invariant relational observables that probe the black hole interior in these states and constrain their properties using effective field theory. By adapting recent versions of the information paradox we show that these observables are necessarily described by state-dependent bulk-boundary maps, which we construct explicitly.

On exact correlation functions in SU(N) ${\cal N} = 2$ superconformal QCD

We consider the exact coupling constant dependence of extremal correlation functions of ${\cal N} = 2$ chiral primary operators in 4d ${\cal N} = 2$ superconformal gauge theories with gauge group SU(N) and N_f=2N massless fundamental hypermultiplets. The 2- and 3-point functions, viewed as functions of the exactly marginal coupling constant and theta angle, obey the tt* equations. In the case at hand, the tt* equations form a set of complicated non-linear coupled matrix equations. We point out that there is an ad hoc self-consistent ansatz that reduces this set of partial differential equations to a sequence of decoupled semi-infinite Toda chains, similar to the one encountered previously in the special case of SU(2) gauge group. This ansatz requires a surprising new non-renormalization theorem in ${\cal N} = 2$ superconformal field theories. We derive a general 3-loop perturbative formula for 2- and 3-point functions in the ${\cal N} = 2$ chiral ring of the SU(N) theory, and in all explicitly computed examples we find agreement with the tt* equations, as well as the above-mentioned ansatz. This is suggestive evidence for an interesting non-perturbative conjecture about the structure of the ${\cal N} = 2$ chiral ring in this class of theories. We discuss several implications of this conjecture. For example, it implies that the holonomy of the vector bundles of chiral primaries over the superconformal manifold is reducible. It also implies that a specific subset of extremal correlation functions can be computed in the SU(N) theory using information solely from the S^4 partition function of the theory obtained by supersymmetric localization.

$tt^*$ equations, localization and exact chiral rings in 4d N=2 SCFTs

We compute exact 2- and 3-point functions of chiral primaries in four-dimensional N=2 superconformal field theories, including all perturbative and instanton contributions. We demonstrate that these correlation functions are nontrivial and satisfy exact differential equations with respect to the coupling constants. These equations are the analogue of the $tt^*$ equations in two dimensions. In the SU(2) N=2 SYM theory coupled to 4 hypermultiplets they take the form of a semi-infinite Toda chain. We provide the complete solution of this chain using input from supersymmetric localization. To test our results we calculate the same correlation functions independently using Feynman diagrams up to 2-loops and we find perfect agreement up to the relevant order. As a spin-off, we perform a 2-loop check of the recent proposal of arXiv:1405.7271 that the logarithm of the sphere partition function in N=2 SCFTs determines the Kähler potential of the Zamolodchikov metric on the conformal manifold. We also present the $tt^*$ equations in general SU(N) N=2 superconformal QCD theories and comment on their structure and implications.

Exact correlation functions in SU(2) N=2 superconformal QCD

We report an exact solution of 2- and 3-point functions of chiral primary fields in SU(2) N=2 super-Yang-Mills theory coupled to four hypermultiplets. It is shown that these correlation functions are non-trivial functions of the gauge coupling, obeying differential equations which take the form of the semi-infinite Toda chain. We solve these equations recursively in terms of the Zamolodchikov metric that can be determined exactly from supersymmetric localization on the four-sphere. Our results are verified independently in perturbation theory with a Feynman diagram computation up to 2-loops. This is a short version of a companion paper that contains detailed technical remarks, additional material and aspects of an extension to SU(N) gauge group.

An Infalling Observer in AdS/CFT

We describe the experience of an observer falling into a black hole using the AdS/CFT correspondence. In order to do this, we reconstruct the local bulk operators measured by the observer along his trajectory outside the black hole. We then extend our construction beyond the black hole horizon. We show that this is possible because of an effective doubling of the observables in the boundary theory, when it is in a pure state that is close to the thermal state. Our construction allows us to rephrase questions about information-loss and the structure of the metric at the horizon in terms of more familiar CFT correlators. It suggests that to precisely identify black-hole microstates, the observer would need to conduct measurements to an accuracy of e^{-S_{BH}}. This appears to be inconsistent with the fuzzball proposal, and other recent proposals in which pure states in the ensemble of the black hole are represented by macroscopically distinct geometries. Furthermore, our description of the black hole interior in terms of CFT operators provides a natural realization of black hole complementarity and a method of preserving unitarity without firewalls.

State-Dependent Bulk-Boundary Maps and Black Hole Complementarity

We provide a simple and explicit construction of local bulk operators that describe the interior of a black hole in the AdS/CFT correspondence. The existence of these operators is predicated on the assumption that the mapping of CFT operators to local bulk operators depends on the state of the CFT. We show that our construction leads to an exactly local effective field theory in the bulk. Barring the fact that their charge and energy can be measured at infinity, we show that the commutator of local operators inside and outside the black hole vanishes exactly, when evaluated within correlation functions of the CFT. Our construction leads to a natural resolution of the strong subadditivity paradox of Mathur and Almheiri et al. Furthermore, we show how, using these operators, it is possible to reconcile small corrections to effective field theory correlators with the unitarity of black hole evaporation. We address and resolve all other arguments, advanced in arxiv:1304.6483 and arxiv:1307.4706, in favour of structure at the black hole horizon. We extend our construction to states that are near equilibrium, and thereby also address the "frozen vacuum" objections of arxiv:1308.3697. Finally, we explore an intriguing link between our construction of interior operators and Tomita-Takesaki theory.

The Black Hole Interior in AdS/CFT and the Information Paradox

We show that, within the AdS/CFT correspondence, recent formulations of the information paradox can be reduced to a question about the existence of certain kinds of operators in the CFT. We describe a remarkably simple construction of these operators on a given state of the CFT. Our construction leads to a smooth horizon, addresses the strong subadditivity paradox, while preserving locality within effective field theory, and reconciles the existence of the interior with the growth of states with energy in the CFT. We also extend our construction to non-equilibrium states.

A non-renormalization theorem for chiral primary 3-point functions

In this note we prove a non-renormalization theorem for the 3-point functions of 1/2 BPS primaries in the four-dimensional N = 4 SYM and chiral primaries in two dimensional N =(4,4) SCFTs. Our proof is rather elementary: it is based on Ward identities and the structure of the short multiplets of the superconformal algebra and it does not rely on superspace techniques. We also discuss some possible generalizations to less supersymmetric multiplets.

Emergent Spacetime and Holographic CFTs

We discuss universal properties of conformal field theories with holographic duals. A central feature of these theories is the existence of a low-lying sector of operators whose correlators factorize. We demonstrate that factorization can only hold in the large central charge limit. Using conformal invariance and factorization we argue that these operators are naturally represented as fields in AdS as this makes the underlying linearity of the system manifest. In this class of CFTs the solution of the conformal bootstrap conditions can be naturally organized in structures which coincide with Witten diagrams in the bulk. The large value of the central charge suggests that the theory must include a large number of new operators not captured by the factorized sector. Consequently we may think of the AdS hologram as an effective representation of a small sector of the CFT, which is embedded inside a much larger Hilbert space corresponding to the black hole microstates.

AdS/CFT and the cosmological constant problem

Within the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence we attempt to formulate the cosmological constant problem in the dual conformal field theory. The fine-tuning of the bulk cosmological constant is related to an apparent fine-tuning in the effective description of the CFT in terms of its light operators: while the correlators of single particle operators satisfy a large N expansion, the expansion does not appear to be natural. Individual terms contributing to correlators have parametrically larger value than the one dictated by large N counting. The final 1/N suppression of correlators is achieved via delicate cancellations between such terms. We speculate on the existence of underlying principles which might make the bulk theory (secretly) natural.

Correlation Functions in Holographic Minimal Models

We compute exact three and four point functions in the W_N minimal models that were recently conjectured to be dual to a higher spin theory in AdS_3. The boundary theory has a large number of light operators that are not only invisible in the bulk but grow exponentially with N even at small conformal dimensions. Nevertheless, we provide evidence that this theory can be understood in a 1/N expansion since our correlators look like free-field correlators corrected by a power series in 1/N . However, on examining these corrections we find that the four point function of the two bulk scalar fields is corrected at leading order in 1/N through the contribution of one of the additional light operators in an OPE channel. This suggests that, to correctly reproduce even tree-level correlators on the boundary, the bulk theory needs to be modified by the inclusion of additional fields. As a technical by-product of our analysis, we describe two separate methods -- including a Coulomb gas type free-field formalism -- that may be used to compute correlation functions in this theory.

Topological Anti-Topological Fusion in Four-Dimensional Superconformal Field Theories

We present some new exact results for general four-dimensional superconformal field theories. We derive differential equations governing the coupling constant dependence of chiral primary correlators. For N=2 theories we show that the Zamolodchikov metric on the moduli space and the operator mixing of chiral primaries are quasi-topological quantities and constrained by holomorphy. The equations that we find are the four-dimensional analogue of the tt* equations in two-dimensions, discovered by the method of "topological anti-topological fusion" by Cecotti and Vafa. Our analysis relies on conformal perturbation theory and the superconformal Ward identities and does not use a topological twist.

Degenerate Stars and Gravitational Collapse in AdS/CFT

We construct composite CFT operators from a large number of fermionic primary fields corresponding to states that are holographically dual to a zero temperature Fermi gas in AdS space. We identify a large N regime in which the fermions behave as free particles. In the hydrodynamic limit the Fermi gas forms a degenerate star with a radius determined by the Fermi level, and a mass and angular momentum that exactly matches the boundary calculations. Next we consider an interacting regime, and calculate the effect of the gravitational back-reaction on the radius and the mass of the star using the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equations. Ignoring other interactions, we determine the "Chandrasekhar limit" beyond which the degenerate star (presumably) undergoes gravitational collapse towards a black hole. This is interpreted on the boundary as a high density phase transition from a cold baryonic phase to a hot deconfined phase.

Small Hairy Black Holes in $AdS_5 \times S^5$

We study small hairy black holes in a consistent truncation of ${\cal N}=8$ gauged supergravity that consists of a single charged scalar field interacting with the metric and a U(1) gauge field. Small very near extremal RNAdS black holes in this system are unstable to decay by superradiant emission. The end point of this instability is a small hairy black hole that we construct analytically in a perturbative expansion in its charge. Unlike their RNAdS counterparts, hairy black hole solutions exist all the way down to the BPS bound, demonstrating that ${\cal N}=4$ Yang Mills theory has an ${\cal O}(N^2)$ entropy at all energies above supersymmetry. At the BPS bound these black holes reduce to previously discussed regular, supersymmetric horizon free solitons. We use numerical methods to continue the construction of these solitons to large charges and find that the line of soliton solutions terminates at a singular solution $S$ at a finite charge. We conjecture that a one parameter family of singular supersymmetric solutions, which emerges out of $S$, constitutes the BPS limit of hairy black holes at larger values of the charge. At leading order in their charge, the thermodynamics of the small hairy black holes constructed in this paper turns out to be correctly reproduced by modeling these objects as a non interacting mix of an RNAdS black hole and the supersymmetric soliton in thermal equilibrium. Assuming that a similar non interacting model continues to apply upon turning on angular momentum, we also predict a rich family of rotating hairy black holes, including new hairy supersymmetric black holes. This analysis suggests interesting structure for the space of (yet to be constructed) hairy charged rotating black holes in $AdS_5\times S^5$, particularly in the near BPS limit.

Holographic Neutron Stars

We construct in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence degenerate composite operators in the conformal field theory that are holographically dual to degenerate stars in anti de Sitter space. We calculate the effect of the gravitational back-reaction using the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equations, and determine the "Chandrasekhar limit" beyond which the star undergoes gravitational collapse towards a black hole.

Nonsupersymmetric Flux Vacua and Perturbed N=2 Systems

We geometrically engineer N=2 theories perturbed by a superpotential by adding 3-form flux with support at infinity to local Calabi-Yau geometries in type IIB. This allows us to apply the formalism of Ooguri, Ookouchi, and Park [arXiv:0704.3613] to demonstrate that, by tuning the flux at infinity, we can stabilize the dynamical complex structure moduli in a metastable, supersymmetry-breaking configuration. Moreover, we argue that this setup can arise naturally as a limit of a larger Calabi-Yau which separates into two weakly interacting regions; the flux in one region leaks into the other, where it appears to be supported at infinity and induces the desired superpotential. In our endeavor to confirm this picture in cases with many 3-cycles, we also compute the CIV-DV prepotential for arbitrary number of cuts up to fifth order in the glueball fields.

Off-shell M5 Brane, Perturbed Seiberg-Witten Theory, and Metastable Vacua

We demonstrate that, in an appropriate limit, the off-shell M5-brane worldvolume action effectively captures the scalar potential of Seiberg-Witten theory perturbed by a small superpotential and, consequently, any nonsupersymmetric vacua that it describes. This happens in a similar manner to the emergence from M5's of the scalar potential describing certain type IIB flux configurations [arXiv:0705.0983]. We then construct exact nonholomorphic M5 configurations in the special case of SU(2) Seiberg-Witten theory deformed by a degree six superpotential which correspond to the recently discovered metastable vacua of Ooguri, Ookouchi, Park [arXiv:0704.3613], and Pastras [arXiv:0705.0505]. These solutions take the approximate form of a holomorphic Seiberg-Witten geometry with harmonic embedding along a transverse direction and allow us to obtain geometric intuition for local stability of the gauge theory vacua. As usual, dynamical processes in the gauge theory, such as the decay of nonsupersymmetric vacua, take on a different character in the M5 description which, due to issues of boundary conditions, typically involves runaway behavior in MQCD.

A second order deconfinement transition for large N 2+1 dimensional Yang-Mills theory on a small two-sphere

We study the thermodynamics of large N pure 2+1 dimensional Yang-Mills theory on a small spatial sphere. By studying the effective action for the Polyakov loop order parameter, we show analytically that the theory has a second order deconfinement transition to a phase where the eigenvalue distribution of the Polyakov loop is non-uniform but still spread over the whole unit circle. At a higher temperature, the eigenvalue distribution develops a gap, via an additional third-order phase transition. We discuss possible forms of the full phase diagram as a function of temperature and sphere radius. Our results together with extrapolation of lattice results relevant to the large volume limit imply the existence of a critical radius in the phase diagram at which the deconfinement transition switches from second order to first order. We show that the point at the critical radius and temperature can be either a tricritical point with universal behavior or a triple point separating three distinct phases.
