Universal constraint on nonlinear population dynamics

Ecological and evolutionary processes show various population dynamics depending on internal interactions and environmental changes. While crucial in predicting biological processes, discovering general relations for such nonlinear dynamics has remained a challenge. Here, we derive a universal information-theoretical constraint on a broad class of nonlinear dynamical systems represented as population dynamics. The constraint is interpreted as a generalization of Fisher's fundamental theorem of natural selection. Furthermore, the constraint indicates nontrivial bounds for the speed of critical relaxation around bifurcation points, which we argue are universally determined only by the type of bifurcation. Our theory is verified for an evolutionary model and an epidemiological model, which exhibit the transcritical bifurcation, as well as for an ecological model, which undergoes limit-cycle oscillation. This work paves a way to predict biological dynamics in light of information theory, by providing fundamental relations in nonequilibrium statistical mechanics of nonlinear systems.

Activity-induced phase transition in a quantum many-body system

A crowd of nonequilibrium entities can show phase transition behaviors that are prohibited in conventional equilibrium setups. An interesting question is whether similar activity-driven phase transitions also occur in pure quantum systems. Here we introduce a minimally simple quantum many-body model that undergoes quantum phase transitions induced by non-Hermiticity. The model is based on a classical anisotropic lattice gas model that undergoes motility-induced phase separation (MIPS), and the quantum phase diagram includes other active phases such as the flocking phase. The quantum phase transitions, which in principle can be tested in ultracold atom experiments, is also identified as the transitions of dynamical paths in the classical kinetics upon the application of biasing fields. This approach sheds light on the useful connection between classical nonequilibrium kinetics and non-Hermitian quantum physics.

Surface wetting by kinetic control of liquid-liquid phase separation

Motivated by the observations of intracellular phase separations and the wetting of cell membranes by protein droplets, we study the nonequilibrium surface wetting by Monte Carlo simulations of a lattice gas model involving particle creation. We find that, even when complete wetting should occur in equilibrium, the fast creation of particles can hinder the surface wetting for a long time due to the bulk droplet formation. Performing molecular dynamics simulations, we show that this situation also holds in colloidal particle systems when the disorder density is sufficiently high. The results suggest an intracellular control mechanism of surface wetting by changing the speed of component synthesis.

Fluctuation Diamagnetism in Two-Band Superconductors

Anomalously large fluctuation diamagnetism around the superconducting critical temperature has been recently observed on iron selenide (FeSe) [S. Kasahara et al., unpublished]. This indicates that superconducting fluctuations (SCFs) play a more significant role in FeSe, which supposedly has two-band structure, than in the familiar single-band superconductors. Motivated by the data in FeSe, SCF-induced diamagnetism is examined in a two-band system, on the basis of a phenomenological approach with a Ginzburg-Landau functional. The obtained results indicate that the SCF-induced diamagnetism may be more enhanced than that in a single-band system due to the existence of two distinct fluctuation modes. Such enhancement of diamagnetism unique to a two-band system seems consistent with the large diamagnetism observed on FeSe, though still far from a quantitative agreement.

Possible Field-Temperature Phase Diagrams of Two-Band Superconductors with Paramagnetic Pair-Breaking

Possible field-temperature superconducting (SC) phase diagrams in two-band quasi-two-dimensional materials with a strong paramagnetic pair-breaking (PPB) are considered theoretically. Attention is paid to the case under a magnetic field $perpendicular$ to the SC layers and to essential differences from the counterpart in the ordinary single-band material. It is found by examining the $H_{c2}(T)$ curve and the vortex lattices to be realized close to $H_{c2}$ that a PPB-induced SC phase with a spatial modulation parallel to the field tends to occur more easily than in the single-band case, and that a crisscrossing vortex lattice proposed previously can occur in place of the conventional Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state within a parameter range. The relevance of the obtained results to FeSe and other iron-based superconductors is discussed.
