Band structure of molybdenum disulfide: from first principle to analytical band model

A simple band model such as the effective mass approximation (EMA) can be used to quickly obtain the lower-energy region for the band structure of monolayer molybdenum disulfide. But the EMA band model cannot give the correct description for the band structure in the higher-energy region. To address this major issue, we propose an analytical band calculation (ABC) model to study monolayer molybdenum disulfide. Important parameters of the ABC model are obtained by fitting the three-direction band structure of monolayer molybdenum disulfide obtained from the first-principles (FP) method. The proposed ABC model fits well with the FP band structure calculation result for monolayer molybdenum disulfide. We also use the ABC model to calculate physical quantities used in carrier transport such as density of states and group velocity. Our ABC model can be extended and further utilized for calculating the key physical quantities of ballistic transport of 2D semiconductor materials.

Hole Mobility Calculation for Monolayer Molybdenum Tungsten Alloy Disulfide

A simple band model using higher order non-parabolic effect was adopted for single layer molybdenum tungsten alloy disulfide (i.e., $\mathrm{Mo}_{1-x}\mathrm{W}_x\mathrm{S}_2$). The first-principles method considering $2\times2$ supercell was used to study band structure of single layer alloy $\mathrm{Mo}_{1-x}\mathrm{W}_x\mathrm{S}_2$ and a simple band (i.e., effective mass approximation model, EMA) model with higher order non-parabolic effect was used to fit the first-principle band structures in order to calculate corresponding the hole mobility. In addition, we investigate the alloy scattering effect on the hole mobility of $\mathrm{Mo}_{1-x}\mathrm{W}_x\mathrm{S}_2$.

TailorGAN: Making User-Defined Fashion Designs

Attribute editing has become an important and emerging topic of computer vision. In this paper, we consider a task: given a reference garment image A and another image B with target attribute (collar/sleeve), generate a photo-realistic image which combines the texture from reference A and the new attribute from reference B. The highly convoluted attributes and the lack of paired data are the main challenges to the task. To overcome those limitations, we propose a novel self-supervised model to synthesize garment images with disentangled attributes (e.g., collar and sleeves) without paired data. Our method consists of a reconstruction learning step and an adversarial learning step. The model learns texture and location information through reconstruction learning. And, the model's capability is generalized to achieve single-attribute manipulation by adversarial learning. Meanwhile, we compose a new dataset, named GarmentSet, with annotation of landmarks of collars and sleeves on clean garment images. Extensive experiments on this dataset and real-world samples demonstrate that our method can synthesize much better results than the state-of-the-art methods in both quantitative and qualitative comparisons.

Search for serendipitous TNO occultation in X-rays

To study the population properties of small, remote objects beyond Neptune's orbit in the outer solar system, of kilometer size or smaller, serendipitous occultation search is so far the only way. For hectometer-sized Trans-Neptunian Objects (TNOs), optical shadows actually disappear because of diffraction. Observations at shorter wave lengths are needed. Here we report the effort of TNO occultation search in X-rays using RXTE/PCA data of Sco X-1 taken from June 2007 to October 2011. No definite TNO occultation events were found in the 334 ks data. We investigate the detection efficiency dependence on the TNO size to better define the sensible size range of our approach and suggest upper limits to the TNO size distribution in the size range from 30 m to 300 m. A list of X-ray sources suitable for future larger facilities to observe is proposed.

Alfven node-free vibrations of white dwarf in the model of solid star with toroidal magnetic field

In the context of the white dwarf asteroseismology, we investigate vibrational properties of a non-convective solid star with an axisymmetric purely toroidal intrinsic magnetic field of two different shapes. Focus is laid on regime of node-free global Lorentz-force-driven vibrations about symmetry axis at which material displacements have one and the same form as those for nodeless spheroidal and torsional vibrations restored by Hooke's force of elastic shear stresses. Particular attention is given to the even-parity poloidal Alfven modes whose frequency spectra are computed in analytic form showing how the purely toroidal magnetic fields completely buried beneath the star surface can manifest itself in seismic vibrations of non-magnetic white dwarfs. The obtained spectral formulae are discussed in juxtaposition with those for Alfven modes in the solid star model with the poloidal, homogeneous internal and dipolar external, magnetic field whose inferences are relevant to Alfven vibrations in magnetic white dwarfs.

Millisecond dips in the 2007-2009 RXTE/PCA lightcurve of Sco X-1 and one possible occultation event

Serendipitous stellar occultation search is so far the only way to detect the existence of very small, very dim, remote objects in the solar system. To date, however, there are only very few reported detections for trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs) in optical bands. In the X-ray band, with the RXTE/PCA data of Sco X-1 taken from June 2007 to October 2009, we found one possible X-ray occultation event. We discuss the veracity and properties of this event, and suggest upper limits to the size distribution of TNOs at hectometer size and of Main-Belt Asteroids (MBAs) at decameter size.
