TNQMetro: Tensor-network based package for efficient quantum metrology computations

TNQMetro is a numerical package written in Python for calculations of fundamental quantum bounds on measurement precision. Thanks to the usage of the tensor-network formalism it can beat the curse of dimensionality and provides an efficient framework to calculate bounds for finite size system as well as determine the asymptotic scaling of precision in systems where quantum enhancement amounts to a constant factor improvement over the Standard Quantum Limit. It is written in a user-friendly way so that the basic functions do not require any knowledge of tensor networks.

Tensor-Network Approach for Quantum Metrology in Many-Body Quantum Systems

Identification of the optimal quantum metrological protocols in realistic many particle quantum models is in general a challenge that cannot be efficiently addressed by the state-of-the-art numerical and analytical methods. Here we provide a comprehensive framework exploiting matrix product operators (MPO) type tensor networks for quantum metrological problems. Thanks to the fact that the MPO formalism allows for an efficient description of short-range spatial and temporal noise correlations, the maximal achievable estimation precision in such models, as well as the optimal probe states in previously inaccessible regimes can be identified. Moreover, the application of infinite MPO (iMPO) techniques allows for a direct and efficient determination of the asymptotic precision of optimal protocols in the limit of infinite particle numbers. We illustrate the potential of our framework in terms of an atomic clock stabilization (temporal noise correlation) example as well as for magnetic field sensing in the presence of locally correlated magnetic field fluctuations (spatial noise correlations). As a byproduct, the developed methods for calculating the quantum Fisher information via MPOs may be used to calculate the fidelity susceptibility - a parameter widely used in many-body physics to study phase transitions.

The quantum Allan variance

The instability of an atomic clock is characterized by the Allan variance, a measure widely used to describe the noise of frequency standards. We provide an explicit method to find the ultimate bound on the Allan variance of an atomic clock in the most general scenario where N atoms are prepared in an arbitrarily entangled state and arbitrary measurement and feedback are allowed, including those exploiting coherences between succeeding interrogation steps. While the method is rigorous and general, it becomes numerically challenging for large N and long averaging times.

Certainty relations, mutual entanglement and non-displacable manifolds

We derive explicit bounds for the average entropy characterizing measurements of a pure quantum state of size $N$ in $L$ orthogonal bases. Lower bounds lead to novel entropic uncertainty relations, while upper bounds allow us to formulate universal certainty relations. For $L=2$ the maximal average entropy saturates at $\log N$ as there exists a mutually coherent state, but certainty relations are shown to be nontrivial for $L \ge 3$ measurements. In the case of a prime power dimension, $N=p^k$, and the number of measurements $L=N+1$, the upper bound for the average entropy becomes minimal for a collection of mutually unbiased bases. Analogous approach is used to study entanglement with respect to $L$ different splittings of a composite system, linked by bi-partite quantum gates. We show that for any two-qubit unitary gate $U\in \mathcal{U}(4)$ there exist states being mutually separable or mutually entangled with respect to both splittings (related by $U$) of the composite system. The latter statement follows from the fact that the real projective space $\mathbb{R}P^{3}\subset\mathbb{C}P^{3}$ is non-displacable. For $L=3$ splittings the maximal sum of $L$ entanglement entropies is conjectured to achieve its minimum for a collection of three mutually entangled bases, formed by two mutually entangling gates.
