Dynamics of Interfaces in the Two-Dimensional Wave-Pinning Model

We study the mass-conserved reaction-diffusion system known as the wave-pinning model, which serves as a minimal framework for describing cell polarity. In this model, the interplay between reaction kinetics and slow diffusion forms a sharp interface that partitions the domain into high- and low-concentration regions. We perform a detailed asymptotic analysis and derive higher-order approximation equations governing the motion of this interface. Our results show that on a fast timescale, the interface evolves via propagating front dynamics, whereas on a slow timescale, it evolves as an area-preserving mean curvature flow. Furthermore, using the derived free boundary problem, we demonstrate that on a significantly slower timescale, an interface whose endpoints lie on the domain boundary drifts along the boundary toward regions of higher curvature. In summary, our analysis reveals that the interface dynamics in the wave-pinning model exhibit a hierarchy of three distinct timescales: wave propagation on a fast timescale, curvature-driven area-preserving evolution on a slow timescale, and motion along the boundary on a significantly slower timescale.

On a singular limit of the Kobayashi--Warren--Carter energy

By introducing a new topology, a representation formula of the Gamma limit of the Kobayashi-Warren-Carter energy is given in a multi-dimensional domain. A key step is to study the Gamma limit of a single-well Modica-Mortola functional. The convergence introduced here is called the sliced graph convergence, which is finer than conventional $L^1$ convergence, and the problem is reduced to a one-dimensional setting by a slicing argument.

Structure-preserving numerical methods for constrained gradient flows of planar closed curves with explicit tangential velocities

In this paper, we consider numerical approximation of constrained gradient flows of planar closed curves, including the Willmore and the Helfrich flows. These equations have energy dissipation and the latter has conservation properties due to the constraints. We will develop structure-preserving methods for these equations that preserve both the dissipation and the constraints. To preserve the energy structures, we introduce the discrete version of gradients according to the discrete gradient method and determine the Lagrange multipliers appropriately. We directly address higher order derivatives by using the Galerkin method with B-spline curves to discretize curves. Moreover, we will consider stabilization of the schemes by adding tangential velocities. We introduce a new Lagrange multiplier to obtain both the energy structures and the stability. Several numerical examples are presented to verify that the proposed schemes preserve the energy structures with good distribution of control points.

A fully discrete curve-shortening polygonal evolution law for moving boundary problems

We consider the numerical integration of moving boundary problems with the curve-shortening property, such as the mean curvature flow and Hele-Shaw flow. We propose a fully discrete curve-shortening polygonal evolution law. The proposed evolution law is fully implicit, and the key to the derivation is to devise the definitions of tangent and normal vectors and tangential and normal velocities at each vertex in an implicit manner. Numerical experiments show that the proposed method allows the use of relatively large time step sizes and also captures the area-preserving or dissipative property in good accuracy.

A new numerical scheme for constrained total variation flows and its convergence

In this paper, we propose a new numerical scheme for a spatially discrete model of constrained total variation flows, which are total variation flows whose values are constrained in a Riemannian manifold. The difficulty of this problem is that the underlying function space is not convex and it is hard to calculate the minimizer of the functional with the manifold constraint. We overcome this difficulty by "localization technique" using the exponential map and prove the finite-time error estimate in general situation. Finally, we show a few numerical results for the cases that the target manifolds are $S^2$ and $SO(3)$.
