Analytic extensions of constant mean curvature one geometric catenoids in de Sitter 3-space

We show that a certain simply-stated notion of "analytic completeness" of the image of a real analytic map implies the map admits no analytic extension. We also give a useful criterion for that notion of analytic completeness by defining arc-properness of continuous maps, which can be considered as a very weak version of properness. As an application, we judge the analytic completeness of a certain class of constant mean curvature surfaces (the so-called "G-catenoids") or their analytic extensions in the de Sitter 3-space.

Curved foldings with common creases and crease patterns

Consider a curve $Γ$ in a domain $D$ in the plane $\boldsymbol R^2$. Thinking of $D$ as a piece of paper, one can make a curved folding $P$ in the Euclidean space $\boldsymbol R^3$. The singular set $C$ of $P$ as a space curve is called the crease of $P$ and the initially given plane curve $Γ$ is called the crease pattern of $P$. In this paper, we show that in general there are four distinct non-congruent curved foldings with a given pair consisting of a crease and crease pattern. Two of these possibilities were already known, but it seems that the other two possibilities (i.e. four possibilities in total) are presented here for the first time.

Cuspidal edges with the same first fundamental forms along a knot

Letting $C$ be a compact $C^ω$-curve embedded in $\boldsymbol R^3$ ($C^ω$ means real analyticity), we consider a $C^ω$-cuspidal edge $f$ along $C$. When $C$ is non-closed, in the authors' previous works, the local existence of three distinct cuspidal edges along $C$ whose first fundamental forms coincide with that of $f$ was shown, under a certain reasonable assumption on $f$. In this paper, if $C$ is closed, that is, $C$ is a knot, we show that there exist infinitely many cuspidal edges along $C$ having the same first fundamental form as that of $f$ such that their images are non-congruent to each other, in general.

Duality on generalized cuspidal edges preserving singular set images and first fundamental forms

In the second, fourth and fifth authors' previous work, a duality on generic real analytic cuspidal edges in the Euclidean 3-space $\boldsymbol R^3$ preserving their singular set images and first fundamental forms, was given. Here, we call this an `isometric duality'. When the singular set image has no symmetries and does not lie in a plane, the dual cuspidal edge is not congruent to the original one. In this paper, we show that this duality extends to generalized cuspidal edges in $\boldsymbol R^3$, including cuspidal cross caps, and $5/2$-cuspidal edges. Moreover, we give several new geometric insights on this duality.

Hypersurfaces with Light-Like Points in a Lorentzian Manifold II

In the authors' previous work, it was shown that if a zero mean curvature $C^4$-differentiable hypersurface in an arbitrarily given Lorentzian manifold admits a degenerate light-like point, then the hypersurface contains a light-like geodesic segment passing through the point. The purpose of this paper is to point out that the same conclusion holds with just $C^3$-differentiability of the hypersurfaces.

Isometric deformations of wave fronts at non-degenerate singular points

Cuspidal edges and swallowtails are typical non-degenerate singular points on wave fronts in the Euclidean $3$-space. Their first fundamental forms belong to a class of positive semi-definite metrics called "Kossowski metrics". A point where a Kossowski metric is not positive definite is called a singular point or a semi-definite point of the metric. Kossowski proved that real analytic Kossowski metric germs at their non-parabolic singular points(the definition of "non-parabolic singular point" is stated in the introduction here) can be realized as wave front germs (Kossowski's realization theorem). On the other hand, in a previous work with K. Saji, the third and the fourth authors introduced the notion of "coherent tangent bundle". Moreover, the authors, with M. Hasegawa and K. Saji, proved that a Kossowski metric canonically induces an associated coherent tangent bundle. In this paper, we shall explain Kossowski's realization theorem from the viewpoint of coherent tangent bundles. Moreover, as refinements of it, we give a criterion that a given Kossowski metric can be realized as the induced metric of a germ of cuspidal edge (resp. swallowtail or cuspidal cross cap). Several applications of these criteria are given. Also, some remaining problems on isometric deformations of singularities of analytic maps are given at the end of this paper.

On the existence of four or more curved foldings with common creases and crease patterns

Consider an oriented curve $Γ$ in a domain $D$ in the plane $\boldsymbol R^2$. Thinking of $D$ as a piece of paper, one can make a curved folding in the Euclidean space $\boldsymbol R^3$. This can be expressed as the image of an "origami map" $Φ:D\to \boldsymbol R^3$ such that $Γ$ is the singular set of $Φ$, the word "origami" coming from the Japanese term for paper folding. We call the singular set image $C:=Φ(Γ)$ the crease of $Φ$ and the singular set $Γ$ the crease pattern of $Φ$. We are interested in the number of origami maps whose creases and crease patterns are $C$ and $Γ$, respectively. Two such possibilities have been known. In the authors' previous work, two other new possibilities and an explicit example with four such non-congruent distinct curved foldings were established. In this paper, we determine the possibility of the number $N$ of congruence classes of curved foldings with the same crease and crease pattern. As a consequence, if $C$ is a non-closed simple arc, then $N=4$ if and only if both $Γ$ and $C$ do not admit any symmetries. On the other hand, when $C$ is a closed curve, there are infinitely many distinct possibilities for curved foldings with the same crease and crease pattern, in general.

Isometric realization of cross caps as formal power series and its applications

Two cross caps in Euclidean $3$-space are said to be formally isometric if their Taylor expansions of the first fundamental forms coincide by taking a suitable local coordinate system. For a given $C^\infty$ cross cap $f$, we give a method to find all cross caps which are formally isometric to $f$. As an application, we give a countable family of intrinsic invariants of cross caps which recognizes formal isometry classes completely.

Zero mean curvature entire graphs of mixed type in Lorentz-Minkowski 3-space

It is classically known that the only zero mean curvature entire graphs in the Euclidean 3-space are planes, by Bernstein's theorem. A surface in Lorentz-Minkowski 3-space $\boldsymbol{R}^3_1$ is called of mixed type if it changes causal type from space-like to time-like. In $\boldsymbol{R}^3_1$, Osamu Kobayashi found two zero mean curvature entire graphs of mixed type that are not planes. As far as the authors know, these two examples were the only known examples of entire zero mean curvature graphs of mixed type without singularities. In this paper, we construct several families of real analytic zero mean curvature entire graphs of mixed type in Lorentz-Minkowski $3$-space. The entire graphs mentioned above lie in one of these classes.

An index formula for a bundle homomorphism of the tangent bundle into a vector bundle of the same rank, and its applications

In a previous work, the authors introduced the notion of `coherent tangent bundle', which is useful for giving a treatment of singularities of smooth maps without ambient spaces. Two different types of Gauss-Bonnet formulas on coherent tangent bundles on 22-dimensional manifolds were proven, and several applications to surface theory were given. Let $M^n$ ($n\ge 2$) be an oriented compact $n$-manifold without boundary and $TM^n$ its tangent bundle. Let $\mathcal E$ be a vector bundle of rank $n$ over $M^n$, and $φ:TM^n\to \mathcal E$ an oriented vector bundle homomorphism. In this paper, we show that one of these two Gauss-Bonnet formulas can be generalized to an index formula for the bundle homomorphism $φ$ under the assumption that $φ$ admits only certain kinds of generic singularities. We shall give several applications to hypersurface theory. Moreover, as an application for intrinsic geometry, we also give a characterization of the class of positive semi-definite metrics (called Kossowski metrics) which can be realized as the induced metrics of the coherent tangent bundles.

Analytic extension of Jorge-Meeks type maximal surfaces in Lorentz-Minkowski 3-space

The Jorge-Meeks $n$-noid ($n\ge 2$) is a complete minimal surface of genus zero with $n$ catenoidal ends in the Euclidean 3-space $\boldsymbol{R}^3$, which has $(2π/n)$-rotation symmetry with respect to its axis. In this paper, we show that the corresponding maximal surface $f_n$ in Lorentz-Minkowski 3-space $\boldsymbol{R}^3_1$ has an analytic extension $\tilde f_n$ as a properly embedded zero mean curvature surface. The extension changes type into a time-like (minimal) surface.

Behavior of Gaussian curvature and mean curvature near non-degenerate singular points on wave fronts

We define cuspidal curvature $κ_c$ (resp. normalized cuspidal curvature $μ_c$) along cuspidal edges (resp. at swallowtail singularity) in Riemannian $3$-manifolds, and show that it gives a coefficient of the divergent term of the mean curvature function. Moreover, we show that the product $κ_Π$ called the product curvature (resp. $μ_Π$ called normalized product curvature) of $κ_c$ (resp. $μ_c$) and the limiting normal curvature $κ_ν$ is an intrinsic invariant of the surface, and is closely related to the boundedness of the Gaussian curvature. We also consider the limiting behavior of $κ_Π$ when cuspidal edges accumulate to other singularities. Moreover, several new geometric invariants of cuspidal edges and swallowtails are given.

Intrinsic properties of surfaces with singularities

In this paper, we give two classes of positive semi-definite metrics on 2-manifolds. The one is called a class of Kossowski metrics and the other is called a class of Whitney metrics: The pull-back metrics of wave fronts which admit only cuspidal edges and swallowtails in $\boldsymbol{R}^3$ are Kossowski metrics, and the pull-back metrics of surfaces consisting only of cross cap singularities are Whitney metrics. Since the singular sets of Kossowski metrics are the union of regular curves on the domains of definitions, and Whitney metrics admit only isolated singularities, these two classes of metrics are disjoint. In this paper, we give several characterizations of intrinsic invariants of cuspidal edges and cross caps in these classes of metrics. Moreover, we prove Gauss-Bonnet type formulas for Kossowski metrics and for Whitney metrics on compact 2-manifolds.

preprint2014arXiv

Isometric deformations of cuspidal edges

Along cuspidal edge singularities on a given surface in Euclidean 3-space, which can be parametrized by a regular space curve, a unit normal vector field $ν$ is well-defined as a smooth vector field of the surface. A cuspidal edge singular point is called generic if the osculating plane of the cuspidal edge (as a regular space curve) is not orthogonal to $ν$. This genericity is equivalent to the condition that its limiting normal curvature $κ_ν$ takes a non-zero value. In this paper, we show that a given generic (real analytic) cuspidal edge can be isometrically deformed preserving $κ_ν$ into a cuspidal edge whose singular set lies in a plane. Such a limiting cuspidal edge is uniquely determined from the initial germ of the cuspidal edge.

Zero mean curvature surfaces in Lorentz-Minkowski 3-space and 2-dimensional fluid mechanics

Space-like maximal surfaces and time-like minimal surfaces in Lorentz-Minkowski3-space are both characterized as zero mean curvature surfaces. We are interested in the case where the zero mean curvature surface changes type from space-like to time-like at a given non-degenerate null curve. We consider this phenomenon and its interesting connection to 2-dimensional fluid mechanics in this expository article.

Zero mean curvature surfaces in Lorentz-Minkowski 3-space which change type across a light-like line

It is well-known that space-like maximal surfaces and time-like minimal surfaces in Lorentz-Minkowski 3-space R^3_1 have singularities in general. They are both characterized as zero mean curvature surfaces. We are interested in the case where the singular set consists of a light-like line, since this case has not been analyzed before. As a continuation of a previous work by the authors, we give the first example of a family of such surfaces which change type across the light-like line. As a corollary, we also obtain a family of zero mean curvature hypersurfaces in R^{n+1}_1 that change type across an (n-1)-dimensional light-like plane.

Flat surfaces in hyperbolic 3-space whose hyperbolic Gauss maps are bounded

We construct a weakly complete flat surface in hyperbolic 3-space having a pair of hyperbolic Gauss maps both of whose images are contained in an arbitrarily given open disc in the ideal boundary of H^3. This construction is accomplished as an application of the minimal surface theory. This looks an interesting phenomenon if one comparing the fact that there are no complete minimal (resp. constant mean curvature one) surfaces in R^3 (resp. H^3) having bounded Gauss maps (resp. bounded hyperbolic Gauss maps).

Intrinsic Invariants of Cross Caps

It is classically known that generic smooth maps of R^2 into R^3 admit only cross cap singularities. This suggests that the class of cross caps might be an important object in differential geometry. We show that the standard cross cap (u,uv,v^2) has non-trivial isometric deformations with infinite dimensional freedom. Since there are several geometric invariants for cross caps, the existence of isometric deformations suggests that one can ask which invariants of cross caps are intrinsic. In this paper, we show that there are three fundamental intrinsic invariants for cross caps. The existence of extrinsic invariants is also shown.

CMC-1 trinoids in hyperbolic 3-space and metrics of constant curvature one with conical singularities on the 2-sphere

CMC-1 trinoids (i.e. constant mean curvature one immersed surface with three regular embedded ends) in hyperbolic 3-space H^3 are irreducible generically, and the irreducible ones have been classified. However, the reducible case has not yet been fully treated, so in this paper we give an explicit description of CMC-1 trinoids in H^3 that includes the reducible case.

A_2-singularities of hypersurfaces with non-negative sectional curvature in Euclidean space

In a previous work, the authors gave a definition of `front bundles'. Using this, we give a realization theorem for wave fronts in space forms, like as in the fundamental theorem of surface theory. As an application, we investigate the behavior of principal singular curvatures along A_2-singularities of hypersurfaces with non-negative sectional curvature in Euclidean space.

Applications of a completeness lemma in minimal surface theory to various classes of surfaces

We give several applications of a lemma on completeness used by Osserman to show the meromorphicity of Weierstrass data for complete minimal surfaces with finite total curvature. Completeness and weak completeness are defined for several classes of surfaces which admit singular points. The completeness lemma is a useful machinery for the study of completeness in these classes of surfaces. In particular, we show that a constant mean curvature one (i.e. CMC-1) surface in de Sitter 3-space is complete if and only if it is weakly complete, the singular set is compact and all the ends are conformally equivalent to a puntured disk.

Coherent tangent bundles and Gauss-Bonnet formulas for wave fronts

We give a definition of `coherent tangent bundles', which is an intrinsic formulation of wave fronts. In our application of coherent tangent bundles for wave fronts, the first fundamental forms and the third fundamental forms are considered as induced metrics of certain homomorphisms between vector bundles. They satisfy the completely same conditions, and so can reverse roles with each other. For a given wave front of a 2-manifold, there are two Gauss-Bonnet formulas. By exchanging the roles of the fundamental forms, we get two new additional Gauss-Bonnet formulas for the third fundamental form. Surprisingly, these are different from those for the first fundamental form, and using these four formulas, we get several new results on the topology and geometry of wave fronts.

The duality between singular points and inflection points on wave fronts

In the previous paper (arXiv:0804.0701), the authors gave criteria for A_{k+1}-type singularities on wave fronts. Using them, we show in this paper that there is a duality between singular points and inflection points on wave fronts in the projective space. As an application, we show that the algebraic sum of 2-inflection points (i.e. godron points) on an immersed surface in the real projective space is equal to the Euler number of M_-. Here M^2 is a compact orientable 2-manifold, and M_-$is the open subset of M^2 where the Hessian of f takes negative values. This is a generalization of Bleecker and Wilson's formula for immersed surfaces in the affine 3-space.

The duality of conformally flat manifolds

In a joint work with Saji, the second and the third authors gave an intrinsic formulation of wave fronts and proved a realization theorem of wave fronts in space forms. As an application, we show that the following four objects are essentially same; * conformally flat n-manifolds (n>=3) with admissible singular points (i.e. admissible GCF-manifolds), * frontals as hypersurfaces in the lightcone Q^{n+1}_+, * frontals as hypersurfaces in the hyperbolic space H^{n+1}, * sapacelike frontals as hypersurfaces in the de Sitter space S^{n+1}_1. Recently, the duality of conformally flat Riemannian manifolds was found by several geometers. In our setting, this duality can be explained via the existence of a two-fold map of the congruent classes of admissible GCF-manifolds into that of frontals in H^{n+1}. It should be remarked that the dual conformally flat metric may have degenerate points even when the original conformally flat metric is positive definite. This is the reason why we consider conformally flat manifolds with singular points. In fact, the duality is an involution on the set of admissible GCF-manifolds. The case n=2 requires an exceptional treatment, since any Riemannian 2-manifolds are conformally flat. At the end of this paper, we also determine the moduli space of isometric immersions of a given simply connected Riemannian 2-manifold into the lightcone Q^{3}_+.

New maximal surfaces in Minkowski 3-space with arbitrary genus and their cousins in de Sitter 3-space

Until now, the only known maximal surfaces in Minkowski 3-space of finite topology with compact singular set and without branch points were either genus zero or genus one, or came from a correspondence with minimal surfaces in Euclidean 3-space given by the third and fourth authors in a previous paper. In this paper, we discuss singularities and several global properties of maximal surfaces, and give explicit examples of such surfaces of arbitrary genus. When the genus is one, our examples are embedded outside a compact set. Moreover, we deform such examples to CMC-1 faces (mean curvature one surfaces with admissible singularities in de Sitter 3-space) and obtain "cousins" of those maximal surfaces. Cone-like singular points on maximal surfaces are very important, although they are not stable under perturbations of maximal surfaces. It is interesting to ask if cone-like singular points can appear on a maximal surface having other kinds of singularities. Until now, no such examples were known. We also construct a family of complete maximal surfaces with two complete ends and with both cone-like singular points and cuspidal edges.

A_k singularities of wave fronts

In this paper, we discuss the recognition problem for A_k-type singularities on wave fronts. We give computable and simple criteria of these singularities, which will play a fundamental role in generalizing the authors' previous work "the geometry of fronts" for surfaces. The crucial point to prove our criteria for A_k-singularities is to introduce a suitable parametrization of the singularities called the "k-th KRSUY-coordinates". Using them, we can directly construct a versal unfolding for a given singularity. As an application, we prove that a given nondegenerate singular point p on a real (resp. complex) hypersurface (as a wave front) in R^{n+1} (resp. C^{n+1}) is differentiably (resp. holomorphically) right-left equivalent to the A_{k+1}-type singular point if and only if the linear projection of the singular set around p into a generic hyperplane R^n (resp. C^n) is right-left equivalent to the A_k-type singular point in R^n (resp. C^{n}). Moreover, we show that the restriction of a C-infinity-map f:R^n --> R^n to its Morin singular set gives a wave front consisting of only A_k-type singularities. Furthermore, we shall give a relationship between the normal curvature map and the zig-zag numbers (the Maslov indices) of wave fronts.
