Classification of Teleparallel Horndeski Cosmology via Noether Symmetries

Teleparallel Horndeski theory offers an avenue through which to circumvent the speed constraint of gravitational waves in an efficient manner. However, this provides an even larger plethora of models due to the increase in action terms. In this work we explore these models in the context of cosmological systems. Using Noether point symmetries, we classify the dynamical systems that emerge from Teleparallel Horndeski cosmologies. This approach is very effective at selecting specific models in the general class of second-order Teleparallel scalar-tensor theories, as well as for deriving exact solutions within a cosmological context. By iterating through the Lagrangians selected through the Noether symmetries, we solve for a number of cosmological systems which provides new cosmological systems to be studied.

Higher dimensional static and spherically symmetric solutions in extended Gauss-Bonnet gravity

We study a theory of gravity of the form $f(\mathcal{G})$ where $\mathcal{G}$ is the Gauss-Bonnet topological invariant without considering the standard Einstein-Hilbert term as common in the literature, in arbitrary $(d+1)$ dimensions. The approach is motivated by the fact that, in particular conditions, the Ricci curvature scalar can be easily recovered and then a pure $f(\cal G)$ gravity can be considered a further generalization of General Relativity like $f(R)$ gravity. Searching for Noether symmetries, we specify the functional forms invariant under point transformations in a static and spherically symmetric spacetime and, with the help of these symmetries, we find exact solutions showing that Gauss-Bonnet gravity is significant without assuming the Ricci scalar in the action.

Reviving Horndeski Theory using Teleparallel Gravity after GW170817

Horndeski gravity was highly constrained from the recent gravitational wave observations by the LIGO Collaboration down to $|c_{g}/c-1|\gtrsim 10^{-15}$. In this Letter we study the tensorial perturbations in a flat cosmological background for an analogue version of Horndenki gravity which is based in Teleparallel Gravity constructed from a flat manifold with a nonvanishing torsion tensor. It is found that in this approach, one can construct a more general Horndeski theory satisfying $c_T=c_g/c=1$ without eliminating the coupling functions $G_5(ϕ,X)$ and $G_4(ϕ,X)$ that were highly constrained in standard Horndeski theory. Hence, in the Teleparallel approach one is able to restore these terms, creating an interesting way to revive Horndeski gravity.

Non-Linear Obstructions for Consistent New General Relativity

We revisit the field content and consistency of the New General Relativity family of theories. These theories are constructed in a geometrical framework with a flat and metric-compatible connection, so the affine structure is entirely determined by the torsion. The action is given by a local and parity-preserving quadratic form of the torsion with three free parameters. It is well-known that a special choice of parameters gives an equivalent to General Relativity and that the spectrum of the general linear theory around Minkowski contains an additional 2-form field. It has been suggested that the viability of these theories at linear order requires the 2-form field to feature a gauge symmetry so that it describes a massless Kalb-Ramond field. In this work we revisit these previous results and compute the cubic interactions. We also obtain the decoupling limit of the theories and show that the required gauge symmetry for the 2-form at linear order cannot be extended to higher orders. This signals towards a pathological behaviour of these theories and singles out the equivalent of General Relativity as the only consistent New General Relativity theory with a stable Minkowski background that includes gravity.

Large scale structures and the cubic galileon model

The maximum size of a bound cosmic structure is computed perturbatively as a function of its mass in the framework of the cubic galileon, proposed recently to model the dark energy of our Universe. Comparison of our results with observations constrains the matter-galileon coupling of the model to $0.033\lesssim α\lesssim 0.17$, thus improving previous bounds based solely on solar system physics.

Noether Symmetries in Gauss-Bonnet-teleparallel cosmology

A generalized teleparallel cosmological model, $f(T_\mathcal{G},T)$, containing the torsion scalar $T$ and the teleparallel counterpart of the Gauss-Bonnet topological invariant $T_{\mathcal{G}}$, is studied in the framework of the Noether Symmetry Approach. As $f(\mathcal{G}, R)$ gravity, where $\mathcal{G}$ is the Gauss-Bonnet topological invariant and $R$ is the Ricci curvature scalar, exhausts all the curvature information that one can construct from the Riemann tensor, in the same way, $f(T_\mathcal{G},T)$ contains all the possible information directly related to the torsion tensor. In this paper, we discuss how the Noether Symmetry Approach allows to fix the form of the function $f(T_\mathcal{G},T)$ and to derive exact cosmological solutions.

Can Brans-Dicke theory with $Λ>0$ describe stars?

A step-by-step approach is followed to study cosmic structures in the context of Brans-Dicke theory with positive cosmological constant $Λ$ and parameter $ω$. First, it is shown that regular stationary black-hole solutions not only have constant Brans-Dicke field $ϕ$, but can exist only for $ω=\infty$, which forces the theory to coincide with the General Relativity. Generalizations of the theory in order to evade this black-hole no-hair theorem are presented. It is also shown that in the absence of a stationary cosmological event horizon in the asymptotic region, a stationary black hole horizon can support a non-trivial Brans-Dicke hair. Even more importantly, it is shown next, that the presence of a stationary cosmological event horizon rules out any regular stationary solution, appropriate for the description of a star. Thus, to describe a star one has to assume that there is no such stationary horizon in the faraway asymptotic region. Under this implicit assumption generic spherical cosmic structures are studied perturbatively and is shown that only for $ω>0$ or $ω\lesssim -5$ their predicted maximum sizes are consistent with observations. We also point out how, many of the conclusions of this work differ qualitatively from the $Λ=0$ spacetimes.
