Muons as a tool for background rejection in Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescope arrays

The presence of muons in air-showers initiated by cosmic ray protons and nuclei is well established as a powerful tool to separate such showers from those initiated by gamma rays. However, so far this approach has been fully exploited only for ground level particle detecting arrays. We explore the feasibility of using Cherenkov light from muons as a background rejection tool for imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope arrays at the highest energies. We adopt an analytical model of the Cherenkov light from individual muons to allow rapid simulation of a large number of showers in a hybrid mode. This allows us to explore the very high background rejection power regime at acceptable cost in terms of computing time. We show that for very large ($\gtrsim$20 m mirror diameter) telescopes, efficient identification of muon light can potentially lead to background rejection levels up to 10$^{-5}$ whilst retaining high efficiency for gamma rays. While many challenges remain in the effective exploitation of the muon Cherenkov light in the data analysis for imaging Cherenkov telescope arrays, our study indicates that for arrays containing at least one large telescope, this is a very worthwhile endeavor.

Science verification of the new FlashCam-based camera in the 28m telescope of H.E.S.S

In October 2019 the central 28m telescope of the H.E.S.S. experiment has been upgraded with a new camera. The camera is based on the FlashCam design which has been developed in view of a possible future implementation in the medium-sized telescopes of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA). We report here on the results of the science verification program that has been performed after commissioning of the new camera, to show that the camera and software pipelines are working up to expectations.

Optimizing Cherenkov photons generation and propagation in CORSIKA for CTA Monte-Carlo simulations

COsmic Ray SImulations for KAscade) is a program for detailed simulation of extensive air showers initiated by high energy cosmic ray particles in the atmosphere, and is used today by almost all the major instruments that aim at measuring primary and secondary cosmic rays on the ground. The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), currently under construction, is the next-generation instrument in the field of very-high-energy gamma-ray astronomy. Detailed CORSIKA Monte Carlo simulations will be regularly performed in parallel to CTA operations to estimate the instrument response functions, necessary to extract the physical properties of the cosmic sources from the measurements during data analysis. The estimated CPU time associated with these simulations is very high, of the order of 200 million HS06 hours per year. Code optimization becomes a necessity towards fast productions and limited costs. We propose in this paper multiple code transformations that aim to facilitate automatic vectorization done by the compiler, ensuring minimal external libraries requirement and high hardware portability.

Simulations of detector arrays and the impact of atmospheric parameters

In Monte-Carlo simulations of gamma-ray or cosmic-ray detector arrays on the ground (here mainly arrays of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes), the atmosphere enters in several ways: in the development of the particle showers, in the emission of light by shower particles, and in the propagation of Cherenkov light (or fluorescence light or of particles) down to ground level. Relevant parameters and their typical impact on energy scale and so on are discussed here.
