Field sources for Simpson-Visser space-times

Simpson-Visser (SV) space-times are the simplest globally regular modifications of the Schwarzschild, Reissner-Nordstrom and other blak-hole solutions of general relativity. They smoothly interpolate between these black holes and traversable wormholes. After a brief presentation of the Schwarzschild-like and Reissner-Nordstrom-like SV geometries, including their Carter-Penrose diagrams, we show that any static, spherically symmetric SV metric can be obtained as an exact solution to the Einstein field equations sourced by a combination of a minimally coupled phantom scalar field with a nonzero potential $V(ϕ)$ and a magnetic field in the framework of nonlinear electrodynamics with the Lagrangian $\mathcal {L(F)}$, $\mathcal{F} = F_{μν} F^{μν}$ (in standard notations). Explicit forms of $V(ϕ)$ and $\mathcal {L(F)}$ are presented for the cases of Schwarzschild-like and Reissner-Nordstrom-like SV metrics.

Echoes in brane worlds: ringing at a black hole--wormhole transition

Echoes are known as modifications of the usual quasinormal ringing of a black hole at late times because of the deviation of space-time from the initial black-hole geometry in a small region near its event horizon. We consider a class of brane-world model solutions of the Shiromizu-Maeda-Sasaki equations, which describe both black holes and wormholes and interpolate between them via a continuous parameter. In this way the brane-world scenario provides a natural model for wormholes mimicking the black hole behavior if the continuous parameter is chosen near the threshold with a black-hole solution. We show that in the vicinity of this threshold interpolating between black holes and wormholes, quasinormal ringing of the wormholes at the initial stage is indistinguishable from that of the black holes with nearby values of the above parameter, but at later times the signal is modified by intensive echoes. We notice that the black-hole mimickers that are wormholes near the threshold have the largest quality factor and are therefore the best oscillators among the considered examples.

On Black Hole Structures in Scalar-Tensor Theories of Gravity

We review some properties of black hole structures appearing in gravity with a massless scalar field, with both minimal and nonminimal coupling. The main properties of the resulting cold black holes are described. The study of black holes in scalar-gravity systems is extended to $k$-essence theories, and some examples are explicitly worked out. In these cases, even while the existence of horizons is possible, the metric regularity requirement on the horizon implies either a cold black type structure or a singular behavior of the scalar field.

Rotating cylindrical wormholes

We consider stationary, cylindrically symmetric configurations in general relativity and formulate necessary conditions for the existence of rotating cylindrical wormholes. It is shown that in a comoving reference frame the rotational part of the gravitational field is separated from its static part and forms an effective stress-energy tensor with exotic properties, which favors the existence of wormhole throats. Exact vacuum and scalar-vacuum solutions (with a massless scalar) are considered as examples, and it turns out that even vacuum solutions can be of wormhole nature. However, solutions obtainable in this manner cannot have well-behaved asymptotic regions, which excludes the existence of wormhole entrances appearing as local objects in our Universe. To overcome this difficulty, we try to build configurations with flat asymptotic regions by the cut-and-paste procedure: on both sides of the throat, a wormhole solution is matched to a properly chosen region of flat space at some surfaces $Σ_-$ and $Σ_+$. It is shown, however, that if we describe the throat region with vacuum or scalar-vacuum solutions, one or both thin shells appearing on $Σ_-$ and $Σ_+$ inevitably violate the null energy condition. In other words, although rotating wormhole solutions are easily found without exotic matter, such matter is still necessary for obtaining asymptotic flatness.

Trapped ghosts: a new class of wormholes

We construct examples of static, spherically symmetric wormhole solutions in general relativity with a minimally coupled scalar field $ϕ$ whose kinetic energy is negative in a restricted region of space near the throat (of arbitrary size) and positive far from it. Thus in such configurations a "ghost" is trapped in the strong-field region, which may in principle explain why no ghosts are observed under usual conditions. Some properties of general wormhole models with the $ϕ$ field are revealed: it is shown that (i) trapped-ghost wormholes are only possible with nonzero potentials $V(ϕ)$; (ii) in twice asymptotically flat wormholes, a nontrivial potential $V(ϕ)$ has an alternate sign, and (iii) a twice asymptotically flat wormhole which is mirror-symmetric with respect to its throat has necessarily a zero Schwarzschild mass at both asymptotics.

A general thick brane supported by a scalar field

A thick Z_2-symmetric domain wall supported by a scalar field with an arbitrary potential V(ϕ) in 5D general relativity is considered as a candidate brane world. We show that, under the global regularity requirement, such a configuration (i) has always an AdS asymptotic far from the brane, (ii) is only possible if V(ϕ) has an alternating sign and (iii) V(ϕ) satisfies a certain fine-tuning type equality. The thin brane limit is well defined and conforms to the Randall-Sundrum (RS2) brane world model if the asymptotic value of V(ϕ) (related to Λ, the effective cosmological constant) is kept thickness-independent. Universality of such a transition is demonstrated using as an example exact solutions for stepwise potentials of different shapes. Also, due to scale invariance of the Einstein-scalar equations, any given regular solution creates a one-parameter family of solutions with different potentials. In such families, a thin brane limit does not exist while the ratio Λ/(brane tension)^2 is thickness-independent and is in general different from its value in the RS2 model.

Scalar-tensor gravity and conformal continuations

Global properties of vacuum static, spherically symmetric configurations are studied in a general class of scalar-tensor theories (STT) of gravity in various dimensions. The conformal mapping between the Jordan and Einstein frames is used as a tool. Necessary and sufficient conditions are found for the existence of solutions admitting a conformal continuation (CC). The latter means that a singularity in the Einstein-frame manifold maps to a regular surface S_(trans) in the Jordan frame, and the solution is then continued beyond this surface. S_(trans) can be an ordinary regular sphere or a horizon. In the second case, S_(trans) proves to connect two epochs of a Kantowski-Sachs type cosmology. It is shown that, in an arbitrary STT, with arbitrary potential functions $U(ϕ)$, the list of possible types of causal structures of vacuum space-times is the same as in general relativity with a cosmological constant. This is true even for conformally continued solutions. It is found that when S_(trans) is an ordinary sphere, one of the generic structures appearing as a result of CC is a traversable wormhole. Two explicit examples are presented: a known solution illustrating the emergence of singularities and wormholes, and a nonsingular 3-dimensional model with an infinite sequence of CCs.

Regular Magnetic Black Holes and Monopoles from Nonlinear Electrodynamics

It is shown that general relativity coupled to nonlinear electrodynamics (NED) with the Lagrangian $L(F)$, $F = F_mn F^mn$ having a correct weak field limit, leads to nontrivial static, spherically symmetric solutions with a globally regular metric if and only if the electric charge is zero and $L(F)$ tends to a finite limit as $F \to \infty$. Properties and examples of such solutions, which include magnetic black holes and soliton-like objects (monopoles), are discussed. Magnetic solutions are compared with their electric counterparts. A duality between solutions of different theories specified in two alternative formulations of NED (called $FP$ duality) is used as a tool for this comparison.

Scalar vacuum structure in general relativity and alternative theories. Conformal continuations

We discuss the global properties of static, spherically symmetric configurations of a self-gravitating real scalar field $ϕ$ in general relativity (GR), scalar-tensor theories (STT) and high-order gravity ($L=f(R)$) in various dimensions. In GR, for fields with arbitrary potentials $V(ϕ)$, not necessarily positive-definite, it is shown that the list of all possible types of space-time causal structure in the models under consideration is the same as the one for $ϕ= const$. In particular, there are no regular black holes with any asymptotics. These features are extended to STT and $f(R)$ theories, connected with GR by conformal mappings, unless there is a conformal continuation, i.e., a case when a singularity in a solution of GR maps to a regular surface in an alternative theory, and the solution is continued through such a surface. This effect is exemplified by exact solutions in GR with a massless conformal scalar field, considered as a special STT. Necessary conditions for the existence of a conformal continuation are found; they only hold for special choices of STT and high-order theories of gravity.

Spherically symmetric false vacuum: no-go theorems and global structure

We enumerate all possible types of spacetime causal structures that can appear in static, spherically symmetric configurations of a self-gravitating, real, nonlinear, minimally coupled scalar field ϕin general relativity, with an arbitrary potential V(ϕ), not necessarily positive-definite. It is shown that a variable scalar field adds nothing to the list of possible structures with a constant ϕfield, namely, Minkowski (or AdS), Schwarzschild, de Sitter and Schwarzschild - de Sitter. It follows, in particular, that, whatever is V(ϕ), this theory does not admit regular black holes with flat or AdS asymptotics. It is concluded that the only possible globally regular, asymptotically flat solutions are solitons with a regular center, without horizons and with at least partly negative potentials V(ϕ). Extension of the results to more general field models is discussed.

Multidimensional Reissner-Nordstrom Problem with a Generalized Maxwell Field

We obtain and study static, spherically symmetric solutions for the Einstein - generalized Maxwell field system in 2n dimensions, with possible inclusion of a massless scalar field. The generalization preserves the conformal invariance of the Maxwell field in higher dimensions. Almost all solutions exhibit naked singularities, but there are some classes of black-hole solutions. For these cases the Hawking temperature is found and its charge/mass and dimension dependence is discussed. It is shown that, unlike the previously known multidimensional black-hole solutions, in our case the Hawking temperature may infinitely grow in the extreme case (that of minimum mass for given charges).
