4d N=2 supergravity observables from Nekrasov-like partition functions

We reinterpret the OSV formula for the on-shell action/entropy function of asymptotically flat BPS black holes as a fixed point formula that is formally equivalent to a recent gluing proposal for asymptotically AdS$_4$ black holes. This prompts a conjecture that the complete perturbative answer for the most general gravitational building block of 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ supergravity at a single fixed point takes the form of a Nekrasov-like partition function with equivariant parameters related to the higher-derivative expansion of the prepotential. In turn this leads to a simple localization-like proposal for a set of supersymmetric partition functions in (UV completed) 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ supergravity theories. The conjecture is shown to be in agreement with a number of available results for different BPS backgrounds with both Minkowski and AdS asymptotics. In particular, it follows that the OSV formula comes from the unrefined limit of the general expression including only the so-called $\mathbb{W}$ tower of higher derivatives, while the on-shell action of pure (Euclidean) AdS$_4$ with round S$^3$ boundary comes from the NS limit that includes only the $\mathbb{T}$ tower. Backgrounds preserving less supersymmetry, such as the under-rotating black holes in flat space, the holographic squashed S$^3$, and the static/rotating twisted and non-twisted Kerr-Newman-like black holes in AdS$_4$ lead to a more general refined version of the corresponding gravitational blocks as dictated by the supersymmetric gluing rules.

AdS$_5$ Holography and Higher-Derivative Supergravity

We study four-derivative corrections to 5d $\mathcal{N}=2$ minimal gauged supergravity using tools from conformal supergravity. There are two supersymmetric invariants at the four-derivative order and we show explicitly how to write down the action in the Poincaré frame in terms of their coefficients. We apply our results in the context of holography where the four-derivative terms in the supergravity action translate into corrections to the conformal anomalies of the dual 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ SCFT. We use these results to study corrections to the entropy of the supersymmetric black string solutions of minimal supergravity. We also discuss explicit embeddings of the 5d supergravity in string and M-theory and use them to fix the higher-derivative coefficients in terms of the microscopic parameters.

Factorization of log-corrections in AdS$_4$/CFT$_3$ from supergravity localization

We use the Atiyah-Singer index theorem to derive the general form of the one-loop corrections to observables in asymptotically anti-de Sitter (AdS$_4$) supersymmetric backgrounds of abelian gauged supergravity. Using the method of supergravity localization combined with the factorization of the supergravity action on fixed points (NUTs) and fixed two-manifolds (Bolts) we show that an analogous factorization takes place for the one-loop determinants of supergravity fields. This allows us to propose a general fixed-point formula for the logarithmic corrections to a large class of supersymmetric partition functions in the large $N$ expansion of a given 3d dual theory. The corrections are uniquely fixed by some simple topological data pertaining to a particular background in the form of its regularized Euler characteristic $χ$, together with a single dynamical coefficient that counts the underlying degrees of freedom of the theory.

One-loop determinants for black holes in 4d gauged supergravity

We continue the effort of defining and evaluating the quantum entropy function for supersymmetric black holes in 4d ${\cal N} = 2$ gauged supergravity, initiated in [1803.05920]. The emphasis here is on the missing steps in the previous localization analysis, mainly dealing with one-loop determinants for abelian vector multiplets and hypermultiplets on the non-compact space $\mathbb{H}_2 \times Σ_{\rm g}$ with particular boundary conditions. We use several different techniques to arrive at consistent results, which have a most direct bearing on the logarithmic correction terms to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of said black holes.

Black hole microstates in AdS$_4$ from supersymmetric localization

This paper addresses a long standing problem, the counting of the microstates of supersymmetric asymptotically AdS black holes in terms of a holographically dual field theory. We focus on a class of asymptotically AdS$_4$ static black holes preserving two real supercharges which are dual to a topologically twisted deformation of the ABJM theory. We evaluate in the large $N$ limit the topologically twisted index of the ABJM theory and we show that it correctly reproduces the entropy of the AdS$_4$ black holes. An extremization of the index with respect to a set of chemical potentials is required. We interpret it as the selection of the exact R-symmetry of the superconformal quantum mechanics describing the horizon of the black hole.

Higher derivative corrections to BPS black hole attractors in 4d gauged supergravity

We analyze BPS black hole attractors in 4d gauged supergravity in the presence of higher derivative supersymmetric terms, including a Weyl-squared-type action, and determine the resulting corrections to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy. The near-horizon geometry AdS$_2 \times$S$^2$ (or other Riemann surface) preserves half of the supercharges in $N=2$ supergravity with Fayet-Iliopoulos gauging. We derive a relation between the entropy and the black hole charges that suggests via AdS/CFT how subleading corrections contribute to the supersymmetric index in the dual microscopic picture. Depending on the model, the attractors are part of full black hole solutions with different asymptotics, such as Minkowski, AdS$_4$, and hvLif$_4$. We give explicit examples for each of the asymptotic cases and comment on the implications. Among other results, we find that the Weyl-squared terms spoil the exact two-derivative relation to non-BPS asymptotically flat black holes in ungauged supergravity.

6d-5d-4d reduction of BPS attractors in flat gauged supergravities

Via a series of Kaluza-Klein (KK) and Scherk-Schwarz (SS) compactifications we relate BPS attractors and their complete (in general non-BPS) flows to a Minkowski vacuum in gauged supergravities with vanishing scalar potential in 4, 5, and 6 dimensions. This way we can look at a class of extremal non-BPS black holes and strings from IIB string theory viewpoint, keeping 4 supercharges on the horizon. Our results imply the existence of a dual 2d N = (0,2) superconformal field theory (SCFT) that originates from a parent N=(4,4) theory living on a D1-D5 system. This is achieved starting from the BPS black string in 6d with an AdS_3xS^3 attractor and taking two different routes to arrive at a 1/2 BPS AdS_2xS^2 attractor of a non-BPS black hole in 4d N=2 flat gauged supergravity. The two inequivalent routes interchange the order of KK reduction on AdS_3 and SS reduction on S^3. We also find the commutator between the two operations after performing a duality transformation: on the level of the theory the result is the exchange of electric with magnetic gaugings; on the level of the solution we find a flip of the quartic invariant I_4 to -I_4.

Dimensional reduction of BPS attractors in AdS gauged supergravities

We relate across dimensions BPS attractors of black strings and black holes of various topology in gauged supergravities with nontrivial scalar potential. The attractors are of the form AdS$_{2, 3} \times Σ^{2, 3}$ in 4, 5, and 6 dimensions, and can be generalized to some higher dimensional analogs. Even though the attractor geometries admit standard Kaluza-Klein and Scherk-Schwarz reductions, their asymptotic AdS spaces in general do not. The resulting lower dimensional objects are black holes with runaway asymptotics in supergravity theories with no maximally symmetric vacua. Such classes of solutions are already known to exist in literature, and results here suggest an interpretation in terms of their higher-dimensional origin that often has a full string theory embedding. In a particular relevant example, the relation between 5d Benini-Bobev black strings arXiv:1302.4451 and a class of 4d Cacciatori-Klemm black holes arXiv:0911.4926 is worked out in full detail, providing a type IIB and dual field theory description of the latter solutions. As a consistency check, the Cardy formula for the field theory is shown to match the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy for horizon topology of any genus.

Wilson lines for AdS_5 black strings

We describe a simple method of extending AdS_5 black string solutions of 5d gauged supergravity in a supersymmetric way by addition of Wilson lines along a circular direction in space. When this direction is chosen along the string, and due to the specific form of 5d supergravity that features Chern-Simons terms, the existence of magnetic charges automatically generates conserved electric charges in a 5d analogue of the Witten effect. Therefore we find a rather generic, model-independent way of adding electric charges to already existing solutions with no backreaction from the geometry or breaking of any symmetry. We use this method to explicitly write down more general versions of the Benini-Bobev black strings and comment on the implications for the dual field theory and the similarities with generalizations of the Cacciatori-Klemm black holes in AdS_4.

Attractors, black objects, and holographic RG flows in 5d maximal gauged supergravities

We perform a systematic search for static solutions in different sectors of 5d $N=8$ supergravities with compact and non-compact gauged R-symmetry groups, finding new and listing already known backgrounds. Due to the variety of possible gauge groups and resulting scalar potentials, the maximally symmetric vacua we encounter in these theories can be Minkowski, de Sitter, or anti-de Sitter. There exist BPS and non-BPS near-horizon geometries and full solutions with all these three types of asymptotics, corresponding to black holes, branes, strings, rings, and other black objects with more exotic horizon topologies, supported by $U(1)$ and $SU(2)$ charges. The asymptotically AdS$_5$ solutions also have a clear holographic interpretation as RG flows of field theories on D3 branes, wrapped on compact 2- and 3-manifolds.

Lessons from the Vacuum Structure of 4d N=2 Supergravity

This PhD thesis is devoted to the study of supersymmetry preserving background solutions of N=2 supergravity in 4 dimensions. The main contents are divided into three major parts, briefly summarized as follows. Part I deals with analysis of maximally supersymmetric configurations. Part II discusses BPS black holes with Minkowski and anti-de Sitter (AdS) asymptotics. The main topics in part III are superalgebras, BPS bounds and conserved charges for asymptotically flat or AdS spacetimes. Most of the chapters are based on previously published results with the exception of chapter 10 in part III, which is genuinely new and discusses the superalgebras of black hole configurations and their near-horizon geometries. A no-go theorem for static BPS black holes in AdS is proven in theories without hypermultiplets and the analogous situation in 5d is briefly explained.

On BPS bounds in D=4 N=2 gauged supergravity II: general matter couplings and black hole masses

We continue the analysis of BPS bounds started in arXiv:1110.2688, extending it to the full class of N=2 gauged supergravity theories with arbitrary vector and hypermultiplets. We derive the general form of the asymptotic charges for asymptotically flat (M_4), anti-de Sitter (AdS_4), and magnetic anti-de Sitter (mAdS_4) spacetimes. Some particular examples from black hole physics are given to explicitly demonstrate how AdS and mAdS masses differ when solutions with non-trivial scalar profiles are considered.

Phase transitions of magnetic AdS4 black holes with scalar hair

We determine the thermodynamic properties of a class of spherically symmetric and static black holes in AdS4 with magnetic charges and scalar hair. These black holes are solutions in 4d N=2 gauged supergravity that can arise from eleven-dimensional supergravity compactified on S^7. At zero temperature, they preserve supersymmetry and hence are stable. At non-zero temperatures, we explore in detail the canonical ensemble and stability of solutions and find a first order phase transition between small and large hairy black holes. The transition emerges as a liquid-gas phase transition in the dual three-dimensional field theory on R x S^2 with magnetic flux through S^2.

Rotating black holes in 4d gauged supergravity

We present new results towards the construction of the most general black hole solutions in four-dimensional Fayet-Iliopoulos gauged supergravities. In these theories black holes can be asymptotically AdS and have arbitrary mass, angular momentum, electric and magnetic charges and NUT charge. Furthermore, a wide range of horizon topologies is allowed (compact and noncompact) and the complex scalar fields have a nontrivial radial and angular profile. We construct a large class of solutions in the simplest single scalar model with prepotential $F = -i X^0 X^1$ and discuss their thermodynamics. Moreover, various approaches and calculational tools for facing this problem with more general prepotentials are presented.

Supersymmetry on Three-dimensional Lorentzian Curved Spaces and Black Hole Holography

We study N <= 2 superconformal and supersymmetric theories on Lorentzian threemanifolds with a view toward holographic applications, in particular to BPS black hole solutions. As in the Euclidean case, preserved supersymmetry for asymptotically locally AdS solutions implies the existence of a (charged) "conformal Killing spinor" on the boundary. We find that such spinors exist whenever there is a conformal Killing vector which is null or timelike. We match these results with expectations from supersymmetric four-dimensional asymptotically AdS black holes. In particular, BPS bulk solutions in global AdS are known to fall in two classes, depending on their graviphoton magnetic charge, and we reproduce this dichotomy from the boundary perspective. We finish by sketching a proposal to find the dual superconformal quantum mechanics on the horizon of the magnetic black holes.

Ungauging black holes and hidden supercharges

We embed the general solution for non-BPS extremal asymptotically flat static and under-rotating black holes in abelian gauged D=4 N=2 supergravity, in the limit where the scalar potential vanishes but the gauging does not. Using this result, we show explicitly that some supersymmetries are preserved in the near horizon region of all the asymptotically flat solutions above, in the gauged theory. This reveals a deep relation between microscopic entropy counting of extremal black holes in Minkowski and BPS black holes in AdS. Finally, we discuss the relevance of this construction to the structure of asymptotically AdS4 black holes, as well as the possibility of including hypermultiplets.

On BPS bounds in D=4 N=2 gauged supergravity

We determine the BPS bounds in minimal gauged supergravity in four spacetime dimensions. We concentrate on asymptotically anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetimes, and find that there exist two disconnected BPS ground states of the theory, depending on the presence of magnetic charge. Each of these ground states comes with a different superalgebra and a different BPS bound, which we derive. As a byproduct, we also demonstrate how the supersymmetry algebra has a built-in holographic renormalization method to define finite conserved charges.

Static supersymmetric black holes in AdS_4 with spherical symmetry

We elaborate further on the static supersymmetric AdS_4 black holes found in arXiv:0911.4926, investigating thoroughly the BPS constraints for spherical symmetry in N = 2 gauged supergravity in the presence of Fayet-Iliopoulos terms. We find Killing spinors that preserve two of the original eight supercharges and investigate the conditions for genuine black holes free of naked singularities. The existence of a horizon is intimately related with the requirement that the scalars are not constant, but given in terms of harmonic functions in analogy to the attractor flow in ungauged supergravity. The black hole charges depend on the choice of the electromagnetic gauging, with only magnetic charges for purely electric gaugings. Finally we show how these black holes can be embedded in N = 8 supergravity and thus in M-theory.

BPS black holes in N=2 D=4 gauged supergravities

We construct and analyze BPS black hole solutions in gauged N=2, D=4 supergravity with charged hypermultiplets. A class of solutions can be found through spontaneous symmetry breaking in vacua that preserve maximal supersymmetry. The resulting black holes do not carry any hair for the scalars. We demonstrate this with explicit examples of both asymptotically flat and anti-de Sitter black holes. Next, we analyze the BPS conditions for asymptotically flat black holes with scalar hair and spherical or axial symmetry. We find solutions only in cases when the metric contains ripples and the vector multiplet scalars become ghost-like. We give explicit examples that can be analyzed numerically. Finally, we comment on a way to circumvent the ghost-problem by introducing also fermionic hair.
