Boltzmann or Bogoliubov? Approaches Compared in Gravitational Particle Production

Gravitational particle production is a minimal contribution to reheating the Universe after the end of inflation. To study this production channel, two different approaches have commonly been considered, one of which is based on the Boltzmann equation, and the other is based on the Bogoliubov transformation. Each of these has pros and cons in practice. The collision term in the Boltzmann equation can be computed based on quantum field theory in the Minkowski spacetime, and thus many techniques have been developed so far. On the other hand, the Bogoliubov approach may deal with the particle production beyond the perturbation theory and is able to take into account the effect of the curved spacetime, whereas in many cases one should rely on numerical methods, such as lattice computation. We show by explicit numerical and analytical computations of the purely gravitational production of a scalar that these two approaches give consistent results for particle production with large momenta during reheating, whereas the Boltzmann approach is not capable of computing particle production out of vacuum during inflation. We also provide analytic approximations of the spectrum of produced scalar with/without mass for the low momentum regime obtained from the Bogoliubov approach.

Double inflation via non-minimally coupled spectator

We argue that double inflation may occur when a spectator field is non-minimally coupled to gravity. As a concrete example, we study a two-field inflationary model where the initial spectator field is non-minimally coupled to gravity while the initial inflaton field is minimally coupled. The non-minimal coupling results in the growth of the spectator field which, in turn, drives the second stage of inflation in a significant region of parameter space. The isocurvature fluctuations originating from the spectator field source adiabatic ones, and hence the spectator non-minimal coupling can modify the inflationary predictions for the spectral index and the tensor-to-scalar ratio even though the initial inflaton field is minimally coupled to gravity. We explicitly show that quadratic chaotic inflation can become viable by the introduction of the spectator non-minimal coupling.

Gravitational waves in models with multicritical-point principle

The multicritical-point principle (MPP) provides a natural explanation of the large hierarchy between the Planck and electroweak scales. We consider a scenario in which MPP is applied to the Standard Model extended by two real singlet scalar fields $ϕ$ and $S$, and a dimensional transmutation occurs by the vacuum expectation value of $ϕ$. In this paper, we focus on the critical points that possess a $\mathbb Z_2$ symmetry $S\rightarrow -S$ and all the other fields are left invariant. Then $S$ becomes a natural dark matter (DM) candidate. Further, we concentrate on the critical points where $ϕ$ does not possess further $\mathbb Z_2$ symmetry so that there is no cosmological domain-wall problem. Among such critical points, we focus on maximally critical one called CP-1234 that fix all the superrenormalizable parameters. We show that there remains a parameter region that satisfies the DM relic abundance, DM direct-detection bound and the current LHC constraints. In this region, we find a first-order phase transition in the early universe around the TeV-scale temperature. The resultant gravitational waves are predicted with a peak amplitude of ${\cal O}(10^{-12})$ at a frequency of $10^{-2}$-$10^{-1}$ Hz, which can be tested with future space-based instruments such as DECIGO and BBO.

Minimal scenario of Criticality for Electroweak scale, Neutrino Masses, Dark Matter, and Inflation

We propose a minimal model that can explain the electroweak scale, neutrino masses, Dark Matter (DM), and successful inflation all at once based on the multicritical-point principle (MPP). The model has two singlet scalar fields that realize an analogue of the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism, in addition to the Standard Model with heavy Majorana right-handed neutrinos. By assuming a $Z_2 $ symmetry, one of the scalars becomes a DM candidate whose property is almost the same as the minimal Higgs-portal scalar DM. In this model, the MPP can naturally realize a saddle point in the Higgs potential at high energy scales. By the renormalization-group analysis, we study the critical Higgs inflation with non-minimal coupling $ξ|H|^2 R$ that utilizes the saddle point of the Higgs potential. We find that it is possible to realize successful inflation even for $ξ=25$ and that the heaviest right-handed neutrino is predicted to have a mass around $10^{14}$ GeV to meet the current cosmological observations. Such a small value of $ξ$ can be realized by the Higgs-portal coupling $λ_{SH}\simeq 0.32$ and the vacuum expectation value of the additional neutral scalar $\langleϕ\rangle\simeq 2.7$ TeV, which correspond to the dark matter mass 2.0 TeV, its spin-independent cross section $1.8\times10^{-9}$ pb, and the mass of additional neutral scalar 190 GeV.

The $R^2$-Higgs inflation with two Higgs doublets

We study $R^2$-Higgs inflation in a model with two Higgs doublets in which the Higgs sector of the Standard Model is extended by an additional Higgs doublet, thereby four scalar fields are involved in the inflationary evolutions. We first derive the set of equations required to follow the inflationary dynamics in this two Higgs doublet model, allowing a nonminimal coupling between the Higgs-squared and the Ricci scalar $R$, as well as the $R^2$ term in the covariant formalism. By numerically solving the system of equations, we find that, in parameter space where a successful $R^2$-Higgs inflation are realized and consistent with low energy constraints, the inflationary dynamics can be effectively described by a single slow-roll formalism even though four fields are involved in the model. We also argue that the parameter space favored by $R^2$-Higgs inflation requires nearly degenerate masses for $m_\mathsf{H}$, $m_A$ and $m_{\mathsf{H}^\pm}$, where $\mathsf{H}$, $A$, and $\mathsf{H}^\pm$ are the extra CP even, CP odd, and charged Higgs bosons in the general two Higgs doublet model taking renormalization group evolutions of the parameters into account. Discovery of such heavy scalars at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) are possible if they are in the sub-TeV mass range. Indirect evidences may also emerge at the LHCb and Belle-II experiments, however, to probe the quasi degenerate mass spectra one would likely require high luminosity LHC or future lepton colliders such as the International Linear Collider and the Future Circular Collider.

Cosmological implications of Standard Model criticality and Higgs inflation

The observed Higgs mass indicates that the Standard Model can be valid up to near the Planck scale $M_\text{P}$. Within this framework, it is important to examine how little modification is necessary to fit the recent experimental results in particle physics and cosmology. As a minimal extension, we consider the possibility that the Higgs field plays the role of inflaton and that the dark matter is the Higgs-portal scalar field. We assume that the extended Standard Model is valid up to the string scale $10^{17}\,\text{GeV}$. (This translates to the assumption that all the non-minimal couplings are not particularly large, $ξ\lesssim 10^2$, as in the critical Higgs inflation, since $M_\text{P}/\sqrt{10^2}\sim 10^{17}\,\text{GeV}$.) We find a correlated theoretical bound on the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$ and the dark matter mass $m_\text{DM}$. As a result, the Planck bound $r<0.09$ implies that the dark-matter mass must be smaller than 1.1\,TeV, while the PandaX-II bound on the dark-matter mass $m_\text{DM}>0.7\pm0.2\,\text{TeV}$ leads to $r\gtrsim 2\times10^{-3}$. Both are within the range of near-future detection. When we include the right-handed neutrinos of mass $M_\text{R}\sim 10^{14}$\,GeV, the allowed region becomes wider, but we still predict $r\gtrsim 10^{-3}$ in the most of the parameter space. The most conservative bound becomes $r>10^{-5}$ if we allow three-parameter tuning of $m_\text{DM}$, $M_\text{R}$, and the top-quark mass.

Spontaneous Leptogenesis in Higgs Inflation

We propose a scenario of spontaneous leptogenesis in Higgs inflation with help from two additional operators: the Weinberg operator (Dim 5) and the derivative coupling of the Higgs field and the current of lepton number (Dim 6). The former is responsible for lepton number violation and the latter induces chemical potential for lepton number. The period of rapidly changing Higgs field, naturally realized in Higgs inflation during the reheating, allows large enhancement in the produced asymmetry in lepton number, which is eventually converted into baryon asymmetry of the universe. This scenario is compatible with high reheating temperature of Higgs inflation model.

Higgs inflation in metric and Palatini formalisms: Required suppression of higher dimensional operators

We investigate the sensitivity of Higgs(-like) inflation to higher dimensional operators in the nonminimal couplings and in the potential, both in the metric and Palatini formalisms. We find that, while inflationary predictions are relatively stable against the higher dimensional operators around the attractor point in the metric formalism, they are extremely sensitive in the Palatini one: for the latter, inflationary predictions are spoiled by $|ξ_4| \gtrsim 10^{-6}$ in the nonminimal couplings $(ξ_2 ϕ^2 + ξ_4 ϕ^4 + \cdots)R$, or by $|λ_6| \gtrsim 10^{-16}$ in the Jordan-frame potential $λ_4 ϕ^4 + λ_6 ϕ^6 + \cdots$ (both in Planck units). This extreme sensitivity results from the absence of attractor in the Palatini formalism. Our study underscores the challenge of realizing inflationary models with the nonminimal coupling in the Palatini formalism.

Proton Decay and Axion Dark Matter in SO(10) Grand Unification via Minimal Left-Right Symmetry

We study the proton lifetime in the $SO(10)$ Grand Unified Theory (GUT), which has the left-right (LR) symmetric gauge theory below the GUT scale. In particular, we focus on the minimal model without the bi-doublet Higgs field in the LR symmetric model, which predicts the LR-breaking scale at around $10^{10\text{--}12}$ GeV. The Wilson coefficients of the proton decay operators turn out to be considerably larger than those in the minimal $SU(5)$ GUT model especially when the Standard Model Yukawa interactions are generated by integrating out extra vector-like multiplets. As a result, we find that the proton lifetime can be within the reach of the Hyper-Kamiokande experiment even when the GUT gauge boson mass is in the $10^{16\text{--}17}$ GeV range. We also show that the mass of the extra vector-like multiplets can be generated by the Peccei-Quinn symmetry breaking in a consistent way with the axion dark matter scenario.

Scalar scattering amplitude in Gaussian wave-packet formalism

We compute an $s$-channel $2\to2$ scalar scattering $ϕϕ\toΦ\toϕϕ$ in the Gaussian wave-packet formalism at the tree-level. We find that wave-packet effects, including shifts of the pole and width of the propagator of $Φ$, persist even when we do not take into account the time-boundary effect for $2\to2$, proposed earlier. The result can be interpreted that a heavy scalar $1\to2$ decay $Φ\toϕϕ$, taking into account the production of $Φ$, does not exhibit the in-state time-boundary effect unless we further take into account in-boundary effects for the $2\to2$ scattering. We also show various plane-wave limits.

Bare Higgs mass at Planck scale

We compute one- and two-loop quadratic divergent contributions to the bare Higgs mass in terms of the bare couplings in the Standard Model. We approximate the bare couplings, defined at the ultraviolet cutoff scale, by the MS-bar ones at the same scale, which are evaluated by the two-loop renormalization group equations for the Higgs mass around 126GeV in the Standard Model. We obtain the cutoff scale dependence of the bare Higgs mass, and examine where it becomes zero. We find that when we take the current central value for the top quark pole mass, 173GeV, the bare Higgs mass vanishes if the cutoff is about 10^{23}GeV. With a 1.3 sigma smaller mass, 170GeV, the scale can be of the order of the Planck scale.

Eternal Higgs inflation and cosmological constant problem

We investigate the Higgs potential beyond the Planck scale in the superstring theory, under the assumption that the supersymmetry is broken at the string scale. We identify the Higgs field as a massless state of the string, which is indicated by the fact that the bare Higgs mass can be zero around the string scale. We find that, in the large field region, the Higgs potential is connected to a runaway vacuum with vanishing energy, which corresponds to opening up an extra dimension. We verify that such universal behavior indeed follows from the toroidal compactification of the non-supersymmetric $SO(16)\times SO(16)$ heterotic string theory. We show that this behavior fits in the picture that the Higgs field is the source of the eternal inflation. The observed small value of the cosmological constant of our universe may be understood as the degeneracy with this runaway vacuum, which has vanishing energy, as is suggested by the multiple point criticality principle.

Higgs inflation from Standard Model criticality

The observed Higgs mass $M_H=125.9\pm0.4$GeV leads to the criticality of the Standard Model, that is, the Higgs potential becomes flat around the scale $10^{17\text{--}18}$GeV for the top mass $171.3$GeV. Earlier we have proposed a Higgs inflation scenario in which this criticality plays a crucial role. In this paper, we investigate detailed cosmological predictions of this scenario in light of the latest Planck and BICEP2 results. We find that this scenario can be consistent with the constraint from the running index too. We also compute the Higgs one-loop effective potential including the Higgs portal scalar dark matter, with the two-loop renormalization group equations and find a constraint on the coupling between Higgs and dark matter depending on the inflationary parameters.

Predictions on mass of Higgs portal scalar dark matter from Higgs inflation and flat potential

We consider the Higgs portal $Z_2$ scalar model as the minimal extension of the Standard Model (SM) to incorporate the dark matter. We find that the dark matter mass is bounded to be lighter than 1000\,GeV within the framework that we have proposed earlier, where the Higgs inflation occurs above the SM cutoff $Λ$, thanks to the fact that the Higgs potential becomes much smaller than its typical value in the SM: $V\llΛ^4$. We can further fix the dark matter mass to be $400\text{GeV}< m_\text{DM}<470\text{GeV}$ if we impose that the cutoff is at the string scale $Λ\sim10^{17}\text{GeV}$ and that the Higgs potential becomes flat around $Λ$, as is required by the multiple point principle or by the Higgs inflation at the critical point. This prediction is testable by the dark matter detection experiments in the near future. In this framework, the dark matter and top quark masses are strongly correlated, which is also testable.

Higgs inflation still alive

The observed value of the Higgs mass indicates that the Higgs potential becomes small and flat at the scale around $10^{17}$GeV. Having this fact in mind, we reconsider the Higgs inflation scenario proposed by Bezrukov and Shaposhnikov. It turns out that the non-minimal coupling $ξ$ of the Higgs-squared to the Ricci scalar can be smaller than ten. For example, $ξ=7$ corresponds to the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r\simeq0.2$, which is consistent with the recent observation by BICEP2.

Notes on sphere-based universal extra dimensions

We review the six dimensional universal extra dimension models compactified on the sphere $S^2$, the orbifold $S^2/Z_2$, and the projective sphere, which are based on the spontaneous compactification mechanism on the sphere. In particular, we spell out the application of the Newman-Penrose eth-formalism on these models with some technical details on the derivation of the Kaluza-Klein modes and their interactions, and revisit the problem in the existence of the zero mode of $U(1)_X$ additional gauge boson required for the spontaneous compactification. We also explain the theoretical background on the vacuum stability argument for the upper bound on the ultraviolet cutoff scale.

Topological Higgs inflation: The origin of the Standard Model criticality

The measured values of the Higgs and top masses and of the strong gauge coupling constant point to the near-criticality of the Standard Model, where two vacua at the electroweak and Planck scales are quasi-degenerate. We argue that the criticality is required by the occurrence of an eternal topological inflation induced by the Higgs potential. The role of this inflation is to continuously create sufficiently flat and homogeneous Universe, providing the necessary initial condition for the subsequent slow-roll inflation that generates the density perturbations of the right magnitude. While the condition for the topological Higgs inflation is only marginally satisfied in the Standard Model, it can be readily satisfied if one introduces the right-handed neutrinos and/or the non-minimal coupling to gravity; currently unknown quantum gravity corrections to the potential may also help. We also discuss the $B-L$ Higgs inflation as a possible origin of the observed density perturbations. Its necessary initial condition, the restored $B-L$ symmetry, can be naturally realized by the preceding topological Higgs inflation.

Constraint on Universal Extra Dimensions from scalar boson searches

We show the bounds on five- and six-dimensional Universal Extra Dimension models from the result of the Higgs boson searches at the Large Hadron Collider and electroweak precision measurement. The latest data released by the ATLAS and the CMS gives the lower bounds on Kaluza-Klein scale which are from 650 GeV to 1350 GeV depending on models from Higgs to diboson/diphoton decay signal. The Higgs production cross section can be enhanced by factor 1.5 in crude estimation, diphoton decay signal is suppressed about 10%. Electroweak precision measurement also gives the lower bounds as from 700 GeV to 1500 GeV.

Minimal Dilaton Model

We construct a minimal calculable model of a light dilaton based on the scenario where only top and Higgs sectors are involved in a quasiconformal dynamics. The model consistently accommodates the electroweak precision tests even when the Higgs boson is very heavy, thereby allowing one to consider the possibility that the particle at around 125GeV, discovered at the LHC experiments, is identified as the light dilaton rather than the Higgs boson. We find that the current LHC data allow distinct parameter regions where the observed particle is either mostly the Higgs boson or the dilaton.

preprint2013arXiv

Minimal Higgs inflation

We consider a possibility that the Higgs field in the Standard Model (SM) serves as an inflaton when its value is around the Planck scale. We assume that the SM is valid up to an ultraviolet cutoff scale Λ, which is slightly below the Planck scale, and that the Higgs potential becomes almost flat above Λ. Contrary to the ordinary Higgs inflation scenario, we do not assume the huge non-minimal coupling, of O(10^4), of the Higgs field to the Ricci scalar. We find that Λmust be less than 5*10^{17}GeV in order to explain the observed fluctuation of the cosmic microwave background, no matter how we extrapolate the Higgs potential above Λ. The scale 10^{17}GeV coincides with the perturbative string scale, which suggests that the SM is directly connected with the string theory. For this to be true, the top quark mass is restricted to around 171GeV, with which Λcan exceed 10^{17}GeV. As a concrete example of the potential above Λ, we propose a simple log type potential. The predictions of this specific model for the e-foldings N_*=50--60 are consistent with the current observation, namely, the scalar spectral index is n_s=0.977--0.983 and the tensor to scalar ratio 0<r<0.012--0.010. Other parameters, dn_s/dlnk, n_t, and their derivatives, are also consistent.

Phenomenological constraints on universal extra dimensions at LHC and electroweak precision test

We show two types of bounds on five- and six-demensional universal extra dimension (UED) models from the latest results of the Higgs search at the LHC and of the electroweak precision data for the S and T parameters. The UED models on which we put lower bounds are the minimal UED model in five dimensions and the six dimensional ones. The highest possible ultraviolet cutoff scale for each UED model is evaluated from the vacuum stability of the Higgs potential by solving the renormalization group equation of the Higgs self coupling. The bounds on the KK scale in the minimal UED model is 650 GeV from the LHC results and 700 GeV from the S, T analysis at the 95% confidence level, while those in the several 6D UED models are from 850 GeV to 1350 GeV (Higgs search) and from 900 GeV to 1500 GeV (S,T analysis).

Universal extra dimensions after Higgs discovery

We show bounds on five- and six-dimensional universal extra dimension (UED) models from the latest results of the Higgs searches at the LHC and from the electroweak precision data for the S and T parameters. We consider the minimal UED model in five dimensions and the ones in six dimensions. The highest possible ultraviolet cutoff scale for each UED model is evaluated from the electroweak vacuum stability by solving the renormalization group equation of the Higgs self-coupling. This scale turns out to be lower than the conventional one obtained from the perturbativity of the gauge coupling. The resultant 95% C.L. lower bounds on the first Kaluza-Klein scale from the LHC results and from the S, T analysis are 600 and 700 GeV in the minimal UED model, while those in the six-dimensional UED models are 800-1300 GeV and 900-1500 GeV, respectively.

Updated results for minimal dilaton model

Both the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the LHC have reported the observation of the particle of mass around 125GeV which is consistent to the Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson, but with an excess of events beyond the SM expectation in the diphoton decay channel at each of them. There still remains room for a logical possibility that we are not seeing the SM Higgs but something else. Here we introduce the minimal dilaton model in which the LHC signals are explained by an extra singlet scalar of the mass around 125GeV that slightly mixes with the SM Higgs heavier than 600GeV. When this scalar has a vacuum expectation value well beyond the electroweak scale, it can be identified as a linearly realized version of a dilaton field. Though the current experimental constraints from the Higgs search disfavors such a region, the singlet scalar model itself still provides a viable alternative to the SM Higgs in interpreting its search results.

Heavy Higgs at Tevatron and LHC in Universal Extra Dimension Models

Universal Extra Dimension (UED) models tend to favor a distinctively heavier Higgs mass than in the Standard Model (SM) and its supersymmetric extensions when the Kaluza-Klein (KK) scale is not much higher than the electroweak one, which we call the weak scale UED, in order to cancel the KK top contributions to the T-parameter. Such a heavy Higgs, whose production through the gluon fusion process is enhanced by the KK top loops, is fairly model independent prediction of the weak scale UED models regardless of the brane-localized mass structure at the ultraviolet cutoff scale. We study its cleanest possible signature, the Higgs decay into a Z boson pair and subsequently into four electrons and/or muons, in which all the four-momenta of the final states can be measured and both the Z boson masses can be checked. We show that the weak scale UED model may account for the 2sigma excess of this event at ATLAS at the ZZ pair invariant mass around 250GeV, at which scale SM background is sufficiently small and the SM Higgs predicts too few events. We have also studied the Higgs mass 500GeV (and also 700GeV with \sqrt{s}=14TeV) and have found that we can observe significant resonance with the integrated luminosity 10fb^{-1} for six dimensional UED models.

Higgs at ILC in Universal Extra Dimensions in Light of Recent LHC Data

We present bounds on all the known universal extra dimension models from the latest Higgs search data at the Large Hadron Collider, taking into account the Kaluza-Klein (KK) loop effects on the dominant gluon-fusion production and on the diphoton/digluon decay. The lower bound on the KK scale is from 500GeV to 1TeV depending on the model. We find that the Higgs production cross section with subsequent diphoton decay can be enhanced by a factor 1.5 within this experimental bound, with little dependence on the Higgs mass in between 115GeV and 130GeV. We also show that in such a case the Higgs decay branching ratio into a diphoton final state can be suppressed by a factor 80%, which is marginally observable at a high energy/luminosity option at the International Linear Collider. The Higgs production cross section at a photon-photon collider can also be suppressed by a similar factor 90%, being well within the expected experimental reach.

A bound on Universal Extra Dimension Models from up to 2fb^{-1} of LHC Data at 7TeV

The recent up to 2fb^{-1} of data from the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the CERN Large Hadron Collider at 7TeV put an upper bound on the production cross section of a Higgs-like particle. We translate the results of the H -> WW -> l nu l nu and H -> gamma gamma as well as the combined analysis by the ATLAS and CMS into an allowed region for the Kaluza-Klein (KK) mass M_{KK} and the Higgs mass $M_H$ for all the known Universal Extra Dimension (UED) models in five and six dimensions. Our bound is insensitive to the detailed KK mass splitting and mixing and hence complementary to all other known signatures.

Dirichlet Higgs as radion stabilizer in warped compactification

We study implications of generalized non-zero Dirichlet boundary condition along with the ordinary Neumann one on a bulk scalar in the Randall-Sundrum warped compactification. First we show profiles of vacuum expectation value of the scalar under the general boundary conditions. We also investigate Goldberger-Wise mechanism in several setups with the general boundary conditions of the bulk scalar field and find that the mechanism can work under non-zero Dirichlet boundary conditions with appropriate vacuum expectation values. Especially, we show that $SU(2)_R$ triplet Higgs in the bulk left-right symmetric model with custodial symmetry can be identified with the Goldberger-Wise scalar.

Unitarity in Dirichlet Higgs Model

We show that a five dimensional Universal Extra Dimension model, compactified on a line segment, is consistently formulated even when the gauge symmetry is broken solely by non-zero Dirichlet boundary conditions on a bulk Higgs field, without any quartic interaction. We find that the longitudinal W+W- elastic scattering amplitude, under the absence of the Higgs zero-mode, is unitarized by exchange of infinite towers of KK Higgs bosons. Resultant amplitude scales linearly with the scattering energy, exhibiting five dimensional nature. A tree-level partial-wave unitarity condition is satisfied up to 6.7 (5.7) TeV for the KK scale 430 (500) GeV, favored by the electroweak data within 90% CL.

Diagonal Kaluza-Klein expansion under brane localized potential

We clarify and study our previous observation that, under a compactification with boundaries or orbifolding, vacuum expectation value of a bulk scalar field can have different extra-dimensional wave-function profile from that of the lowest Kaluza-Klein mode of its quantum fluctuation, under presence of boundary-localized potentials which would be necessarily generated through renormalization group running. For concreteness, we analyze the Universal Extra Dimension model compactified on orbifold $S^1/Z_2$, with brane-localized Higgs potentials at the orbifold fixed points. We compute the Kaluza-Klein expansion of the Higgs and gauge bosons in an $R_ξ$-like gauge by treating the brane-localized potential as a small perturbation. We also check that the $ρ$ parameter is not altered by the brane localized potential.

Dirichlet Higgs in extra-dimension, consistent with electroweak data

We propose a simple five-dimensional extension of the Standard Model (SM) without any Higgs potential nor any extra fields. A Higgs doublet lives in the bulk of a flat line segment and its boundary condition is Dirichlet at the ends of the line, which causes the electroweak symmetry breaking without Higgs potential. The vacuum expectation value of the Higgs is induced from the Dirichlet boundary condition which is generally allowed in higher dimensional theories. The lightest physical Higgs has non-flat profile in the extra dimension even though the vacuum expectation value is flat. As a consequence, we predict a maximal top Yukawa deviation (no coupling between top and Higgs) for the Brane-Localized Fermion and a small deviation, a multiplication of 2\sqrt{2}/π\simeq0.9 to the Yukawa coupling, for the Bulk Fermion. The latter is consistent with the electroweak precision data within 90% CL for 430GeV\lesssim m_{KK}\lesssim 500GeV.

Phenomenological Aspects of Dirichlet Higgs Model from Extra-Dimension

We study a simple five-dimensional extension of the Standard Model, compactified on a flat line segment in which there propagate Higgs and gauge bosons of the Standard Model. We impose a Dirichlet boundary condition on the Higgs field to realize its vacuum expectation value. Since a flat Nambu-Goldstone zero-mode of the bulk Higgs is eliminated by the Dirichlet boundary condition, a superposition of the Higgs Kaluza-Klein modes play the role of the Nambu-Goldstone boson except at the boundaries. We discuss phenomenology of our model at the LHC, namely the top Yukawa deviation and the production and decay of the physical Higgs field, as well as the constraints from the electroweak precision measurements.

Universal Extra Dimensions on Real Projective Plane

We propose a six dimensional Universal Extra Dimensions (UED) model compactified on a real projective plane $RP^2$, a two-sphere with its antipodal points being identified. We utilize the Randjbar-Daemi-Salam-Strathdee spontaneous sphere compactification with a monopole configuration of an extra $U(1)_X$ gauge field that leads to a spontaneous radius stabilization. Unlike the sphere and the so-called $S^2/Z_2$ compactifications, the massless $U(1)_X$ gauge boson is safely projected out. We show how a compactification on a non-orientable manifold results in a chiral four dimensional gauge theory by utilizing 6D chiral gauge and Yukawa interactions. The resultant Kaluza-Klein mass spectra are distinct from the ordinary UED models compactified on torus. We briefly comment on the anomaly cancellation and also on a possible dark matter candidate in our model.

Top Yukawa Deviation in Extra Dimension

We suggest a simple one-Higgs-doublet model living in the bulk of five-dimensional spacetime compactified on $S^1/Z_2$, in which the top Yukawa coupling can be smaller than the naive standard-model expectation, i.e. the top quark mass divided by the Higgs vacuum expectation value. If we find only single Higgs particle at the LHC and also observe the top Yukawa deviation, our scenario becomes a realistic candidate beyond the standard model. The Yukawa deviation comes from the fact that the wave function profile of the free physical Higgs field can become different from that of the vacuum expectation value, due to the presence of the brane-localized Higgs potentials. In the Brane-Localized Fermion scenario, we find sizable top Yukawa deviation, which could be checked at the LHC experiment, with a dominant Higgs production channel being the $WW$ fusion. We also study the Bulk Fermion scenario with brane-localized Higgs potential, which resembles the Universal Extra Dimension model with a stable dark matter candidate. We show that both scenarios are consistent with the current electroweak precision measurements.

Effects of brane-flux transition on black holes in string theory

Extremal N=2 black holes in four dimensions can be described by an ensemble of D3-branes wrapped on internal supersymmetric three-cycles of Calabi-Yau threefolds on which type IIB superstring theory is compactified. We construct a similar configuration, with extra RR and NS-NS three-form fluxes being turned on. We can avoid the Freed-Witten anomaly on the D3-branes by enforcing the pullback of these extra fluxes to the D3-branes to vanish at the classical level. In the setup the D3-brane charge is not conserved since it is classified as a trivial class in twisted K-theory. Consequently, the D3-branes may disappear by encountering an instantonic D5-brane localized in time. We discuss what happens on the black hole described by such disappearing D3-branes, relying mainly on topological arguments. Especially, we argue that another RR three-form flux will be left as a lump of remnant which is localized in the uncompactified four-dimensional space-time and that it may carry the same amount of degrees of freedom to describe a black hole, in cooperation with the original NS-NS flux, after this transition of the D3-branes.

We find that it becomes larger than the Schwarzschild radius squared, which is conventionally utilized in literature, and our result nicely agrees with the recent numerical study by Yoshino and Nambu within a few percent error for higher dimensional case. In the same approximation to obtain the above result, we find that the production cross section becomes larger for the black hole with larger angular momentum. Second, we derive the generalized Teukolsky equation for spin 0, 1/2 and 1 brane fields in the higher dimensional Kerr geometry and explicitly show that it is separable in any dimensions. For five-dimensional (Randall-Sundrum) black hole, we obtain analytic formulae for the greybody factors in low frequency expansion and we present the power spectra of the Hawking radiation as well as their angular dependence. Phenomenological implications of our result are briefly sketched.
