Stirling numbers and inverse factorial series

We study inverse factorial series and their relation to Stirling numbers of the first kind. We prove a special representation of the polylogarithm function in terms of series with such numbers. Using various identities for Stirling numbers of the first kind we construct a number of expansions of functions in terms of inverse factorial series where the coefficients are special numbers. These results are used to prove/reprove the asymptotic expansion of some classical functions. We also prove a binomial formula involving inverse factorials.

Power Series with Binomial Sums and Asymptotic Expansions

This paper is a study of power series, where the coefficients are binomial expressions (iterated finite differences). Our results can be used for series summation, for series transformation, or for asymptotic expansions involving Stirling numbers of the second kind. In certain cases we obtain asymptotic expansions involving Bernoulli polynomials, poly-Bernoulli polynomials, or Euler polynomials. We also discuss connections to Euler series transformations and other series transformation formulas.

Euler Sums of Hyperharmonic Numbers

The hyperharmonic numbers h_{n}^{(r)} are defined by means of the classical harmonic numbers. We show that the Euler-type sums with hyperharmonic numbers: σ(r,m)=\sum_{n=1}^{\infty}((h_{n}^{(r)})/(n^{m})) can be expressed in terms of series of Hurwitz zeta function values. This is a generalization of a result of Mező and Dil. We also provide an explicit evaluation of σ(r,m) in a closed form in terms of zeta values and Stirling numbers of the first kind. Furthermore, we evaluate several other series involving hyperharmonic numbers.

Harmonic motion and Cassini ovals

We consider a two-dimensional free harmonic oscillator where the initial position is fixed and the initial velocity can change direction. All possible orbits are ellipses and their enveloping curve is an ellipse too. We show that the locus of the foci of all elliptical orbits is a Cassini oval. Depending on the magnitude of the initial velocity we observe all three kinds of Cassini ovals, one of which is the lemniscate of Bernoulli. These Cassini ovals have the same foci as the enveloping ellipse.

Series Transformation Formulas of Euler Type, Hadamard Product of Functions, and Harmonic Number Identities

The integral representation of the Hadamard product of two functions is used to prove several Euler-type series transformation formulas. As applications we obtain three binomial identities involving harmonic numbers and an identity for the Laguerre polynomials. We also evaluate in a closed form certain power series with harmonic numbers

The Euler Series Transformation and the Binomial Identities of Ljunggren, Munarini and Simons

It is shown that the curious identity of Simons follows immediately from Euler's series transformation formula and also from an identity due to Ljunggren. The relation of Simons' identity to Legendre's polynomials is also discussed. At the end we use the generalized Euler series transformation to obtain two recent binomial identities of Munarini.
