Galois scaffolds for cyclic pnp^n-extensions in characteristic pp

Let KK be a local field of characteristic pp and let L/KL/K be a totally ramified Galois extension such that Gal(L/K)≅Cpn(L/K)\cong C_{p^n}. In this paper we find sufficient conditions for L/KL/K to admit a Galois scaffold. This leads to sufficient conditions for the ring of integers OLO_L to be free of rank 1 over its associated order A0A_0, and to stricter conditions which imply that A0A_0 is a Hopf order in the group ring K[Cpn]K[C_{p^n}].

Extensions of local fields given by 3-term Eisenstein polynomials

Let KK be a local field with residue characteristic pp and let L/KL/K be a totally ramified extension of degree pkp^k. In this paper we show that if L/KL/K has only two distinct indices of inseparability then there exists a uniformizer πLπ_L for LL whose minimum polynomial over KK has at most three terms. This leads to an explicit classification of extensions with two indices of inseparability. Our classification extends work of Amano, who considered the case k=1k=1.

Extensions of local fields and elementary symmetric polynomials

Let KK be a local field whose residue field has characteristic pp and let L/KL/K be a finite separable totally ramified extension of degree n=upνn=up^ν. Let σ1,…,σnσ_1,\dots,σ_n denote the KK-embeddings of LL into a separable closure KsepK^{sep} of KK. For 1≤h≤n1\le h\le n let eh(X1,…,Xn)e_h(X_1,\dots,X_n) denote the hhth elementary symmetric polynomial in nn variables, and for α∈Lα\in L set Eh(α)=eh(σ1(α),…,σn(α))E_h(α) =e_h(σ_1(α),\dots,σ_n(α)). Set j=min⁡{vp(h),ν}j=\min\{v_p(h),ν\}. We show that for r∈Zr\in\mathbb{Z} we have Eh(MLr)⊂MK⌈(ij+hr)/n⌉E_h(\mathcal{M}_L^r)\subset \mathcal{M}_K^{\lceil(i_j+hr)/n\rceil}, where iji_j is the jjth index of inseparability of L/KL/K. In certain cases we also show that Eh(MLr)E_h(\mathcal{M}_L^r) is not contained in any higher power of MK\mathcal{M}_K.

Indices of inseparability in towers of field extensions

Let KK be a local field whose residue field has characteristic pp and let L/KL/K be a finite separable totally ramified extension of degree n=apνn=ap^ν. The indices of inseparability i0,i1,...,iνi_0,i_1,...,i_ν of L/KL/K were defined by Fried in the case char(K)=p(K)=p and by Heiermann in the case char(K)=0(K)=0; they give a refinement of the usual ramification data for L/KL/K. The indices of inseparability can be used to construct "generalized Hasse-Herbrand functions" ϕL/Kjϕ_{L/K}^j for 0≤j≤ν0\le j\leν. In this paper we give an interpretation of the values ϕL/Kj(c)ϕ_{L/K}^j(c) for natural numbers cc. We use this interpretation to study the behavior of generalized Hasse-Herbrand functions in towers of field extensions.

Indices of inseparability for elementary abelian p-extensions

Let K be a local field whose residue field is a finite field of characteristic p, and let L/K be a finite totally ramified Galois extension. Fried and Heiermann defined the "indices of inseparability" of L/K, a refinement of the ramification data of L/K. We give a method for computing the indices of inseparability of the extension L/K in terms of the norm group N_{L/K}(L^*) in the case where K has characteristic p and Gal(L/K) is an elementary abelian p-group with a single ramification break. In some cases our methods lead to simple formulas for the indices of inseparability.
