Compressed Manifold Modes: Fast Calculation and Natural Ordering

Compressed manifold modes are locally supported analogues of eigenfunctions of the Laplace-Beltrami operator of a manifold. In this paper we describe an algorithm for the calculation of modes for discrete manifolds that, in experiments, requires on average 47% fewer iterations and 44% less time than the previous algorithm. We show how to naturally order the modes in an analogous way to eigenfunctions, that is we define a compressed eigenvalue. Furthermore, in contrast to the previous algorithm we permit unlumped mass matrices for the operator and we show, unlike the case of eigenfunctions, that modes can, in general, be oriented.

A-classification of map-germs via $_V$K-equivalence

The classification of map-germs up to the natural right-left equivalence (also known as A-equivalence) is often complicated. Certainly it is more complicated than K-equivalence which is extremely easy to work with because the associated tangent spaces are not 'mixed' modules as they are in the A-equivalence case. In this paper we use a version of K-equivalence, denoted $_V$K-equivalence, that is defined using K-equivalences that preserve a variety in the source of maps to classify maps up to A-equivalence. This is possible through making clear the connection between the two equivalences - previous work by Damon mostly focussed on the relation between the codimensions associated to the maps. To demonstrate the power and efficiency of the method we give a classification of certain A$_e$-codimension 2 maps from $n$-space to $n+1$-space. The proof using $_V$K-equivalence is considerably shorter - by a wide margin - than one using A-equivalence directly.

Homotopy Type of Disentanglements of Multi-germs

For a complex analytic map f from n-space to p-space with n<p and with an isolated instability at the origin, the disentanglement of f is a local stabilization of f that is analogous to the Milnor fibre for functions. For mono-germs it is known that the disentanglement is a wedge of spheres of possibly varying dimensions. In this paper we give a condition that allows us to deduce that the same is true for a large class of multi-germs.
