Bootstrapped zero density estimates and a central limit theorem for the zeros of the zeta function

We unconditionally prove a central limit theorem for linear statistics of the zeros of the Riemann zeta function with diverging variance. Previously, theorems of this sort have been proved under the assumption of the Riemann hypothesis. The result mirrors central limit theorems in random matrix theory that have been proved by Szegő, Spohn, and Soshnikov among others, and therefore provides support for the view that the zeros of the zeta function are distributed like the eigenvalues of a random matrix. A key ingredient in our proof is a simple bootstrapping of classical zero density estimates of Selberg and Jutila for the zeta function, which may be of independent interest.

Limit operators for circular ensembles

It is known that a unitary matrix can be decomposed into a product of reflections, one for each dimension, and the Haar measure on the unitary group pushes forward to independent uniform measures on the reflections. We consider the sequence of unitary matrices given by successive products of random reflections. In this coupling, we show that powers of the sequence of matrices converge in a suitable sense to a flow of operators which acts on a random vector space. The vector space has an explicit description as a subspace of the space of sequences of complex numbers. The eigenvalues of the matrices converge almost surely to the eigenvalues of the flow, which are distributed in law according to a sine-kernel point process. The eigenvectors of the matrices converge almost surely to vectors which are distributed in law as Gaussian random fields on a countable set. This flow gives the first example of a random operator with a spectrum distributed according to a sine-kernel point process which is naturally constructed from finite dimensional random matrix theory.

Singularity of Random Matrices over Finite Fields

Let $A$ be an $n \times n$ random matrix with iid entries over a finite field of order $q$. Suppose that the entries do not take values in any additive coset of the field with probability greater than $1 - α$ for some fixed $0 < α< 1$. We show that the singularity probability converges to the uniform limit with an exponentially small error depending only on $α$. We also show that the distribution of the determinant of $A$ converges to its limiting distribution at an exponential rate.
