On ideal minimally non-packing clutters

We consider the following conjecture proposed by Cornuéjols, Guenin and Margot: every ideal minimally non-packing clutter has a transversal of size 2. For a clutter C, the tilde clutter is the set of hyperedges of C which intersect any minimum transversal in exactly one element. We divide the (non-)existence problem of an ideal minimally non-packing clutter D into two steps. In the first step, we give necessary conditions for C = the tilde clutter of D when a clutter D is an ideal minimally non-packing clutter. In the second step, for a clutter C satisfying the conditions in the first step, we consider whether C has an ideal minimally non-packing clutter D with C= the tilde clutter of D. We show that the clutter of a combinatorial affine plane satisfies the conditions in the first step. Moreover, we show that the clutter of a combinatorial affine plane does not have any ideal minimally non-packing clutter of blocking number at least 3.

The Weak-Map Order and Polytopal Decompositions of Matroid Base Polytopes

The weak-map order on the matroid base polytopes is the partial order defined by inclusion. Lucas proved that the base polytope of no binary matroid includes the base polytope of a connected matroid. A matroid base polytope is said to be decomposable when it has a polytopal decomposition which consists of at least two matroid base polytopes. We shed light on the relation between the decomposability and the weak-map order of matroid base polytopes. We classify matroids into five types with respect to the weak-map order and decomposability. We give an example of a matroid in each class. Moreover, we give a counterexample to a conjecture proposed by Lucas, which says that, when one matroid base polytope covers another matroid base polytope with respect to inclusion, the latter matroid base polytope should be a facet of the former matroid base polytope.

Obstructions to shellability, partitionability, and sequential Cohen-Macaulayness

For a property $\cal P$ of simplicial complexes, a simplicial complex $Γ$ is an obstruction to $\cal P$ if $Γ$ itself does not satisfy $\cal P$ but all of its proper restrictions satisfy $\cal P$. In this paper, we determine all obstructions to shellability of dimension $\le 2$, refining the previous work by Wachs. As a consequence we obtain that the set of obstructions to shellability, that to partitionability and that to sequential Cohen-Macaulayness all coincide for dimensions $\le 2$. We also show that these three sets of obstructions coincide in the class of flag complexes. These results show that the three properties, hereditary-shellability, hereditary-partitionability, and hereditary-sequential Cohen-Macaulayness are equivalent for these classes.
