Nonnegative solutions of an indefinite sublinear Robin problem II: local and global exactness results

We go further in the investigation of the Robin problem (Pα)(P_α): −Δu=a(x)uq-Δu=a(x)u^{q} in ΩΩ, u≥0u\geq0 in ΩΩ, ∂νu=αu\partial_νu=αu on ∂Ω\partial Ω; on a bounded domain Ω⊂RNΩ\subset\mathbb{R}^{N}, with aa sign-changing and 0<q<10<q<1. Assuming the existence of a positive solution for α=0α=0 (which holds if qq is close enough to 1), we sharpen the description of the nontrivial solution set of (Pα)(P_α) for α>0α>0. Moreover, strengthening the assumptions on aa and qq we provide a global (i.e. for every α>0α>0) exactness result on the number of solutions of (Pα)(P_α) . Our approach also applies to the problem (Sα)(S_α): −Δu=αu+a(x)uq-Δu=αu + a(x)u^{q} in ΩΩ, u≥0u\geq0 in ΩΩ, ∂νu=0\partial_νu=0 on ∂Ω\partial Ω.

Uniqueness and positivity issues in a quasilinear indefinite problem

We consider the problem $$ (P_λ)\quad -Δ_{p}u=λu^{p-1}+a(x)u^{q-1},\quad u\geq0\quad\mbox{ in }Ω$$ under Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions. Here ΩΩ is a smooth bounded domain of RN\mathbb{R}^{N} (N≥1N\geq1), λ∈Rλ\in\mathbb{R}, 1<q<p1<q<p, and a∈C(Ω‾)a\in C(\overlineΩ) changes sign. These conditions enable the existence of dead core solutions for this problem, which may admit multiple nontrivial solutions. We show that for λ<0λ<0 the functional Iλ(u):=∫Ω(1p∣∇u∣p−λp∣u∣p−1qa(x)∣u∣q), I_λ(u):=\int_Ω\left( \frac{1}{p}|\nabla u|^{p}-\frac{λ}{p}|u|^{p}-\frac{1}{q}a(x)|u|^{q}\right) , defined in X=W01,p(Ω)X=W_{0}^{1,p}(Ω) or X=W1,p(Ω)X=W^{1,p}(Ω), has \textit{exactly} one nonnegative global minimizer, and this one is the \textit{only} solution of (Pλ)(P_λ) being positive in Ωa+Ω_{a}^{+} (the set where a>0a>0). In particular, this problem has at most one positive solution for λ<0λ<0. Under some condition on aa, the above uniqueness result fails for some values of λ>0λ>0 as we obtain, besides the ground state solution, a \textit{second} solution positive in Ωa+Ω_{a}^{+}. We also provide conditions on λλ, aa and qq such that these solutions become positive in ΩΩ, and analyze the formation of dead cores for a generic solution.

Uniqueness and sign properties of minimizers in a quasilinear indefinite problem

Let 1<q<p1<q<p and a∈C(Ω‾)a\in C(\overlineΩ) be sign-changing, where ΩΩ is a bounded and smooth domain of RN\mathbb{R}^{N}. We show that the functional Iq(u):=∫Ω(1p∣∇u∣p−1qa(x)∣u∣q), I_{q}(u):=\int_Ω\left( \frac{1}{p}|\nabla u|^{p}-\frac{1}{q}a(x)|u|^{q}\right) , has exactly one nonnegative minimizer UqU_{q} (in W01,p(Ω)W_{0}^{1,p}(Ω) or W1,p(Ω)W^{1,p}(Ω)). In addition, we prove that UqU_{q} is the only possible \textit{positive} solution of the associated Euler-Lagrange equation, which shows that this equation has at most one positive solution. Furthermore, we show that if qq is close enough to pp then UqU_{q} is positive, which also guarantees that minimizers of IqI_{q} do not change sign. Several of these results are new even for p=2p=2.

An indefinite concave-convex equation under a Neumann boundary condition I

We investigate the problem $$-Δu = λb(x)|u|^{q-2}u +a(x)|u|^{p-2}u \mbox{ in } Ω, \quad \frac{\partial u}{\partial \mathbf{n}} = 0 \mbox{ on } \partial Ω, \leqno{(P_λ)} $$ where ΩΩ is a bounded smooth domain in RN\mathbb{R}^N (N≥2N \geq2), 1<q<2<p1<q<2<p, λ∈Rλ\in \mathbb{R}, and a,b∈Cα(Ω‾)a,b \in C^α(\overlineΩ) with 0<α<10<α<1. Under some indefinite type conditions on aa and bb we prove the existence of two nontrivial non-negative solutions for ∣λ∣|λ| small. We characterize then the asymptotic profiles of these solutions as λ→0λ\to 0, which implies in some cases the positivity and ordering of these solutions. In addition, this asymptotic analysis suggests the existence of a loop type subcontinuum in the non-negative solutions set. We prove in some cases the existence of such subcontinuum via a bifurcation and topological analysis of a regularized version of (Pλ)(P_λ).

Positivity results for indefinite sublinear elliptic problems via a continuity argument

We establish a positivity property for a class of semilinear elliptic problems involving indefinite sublinear nonlinearities. Namely, we show that any nontrivial nonnegative solution is positive for a class of problems the strong maximum principle does not apply to. Our approach is based on a continuity argument combined with variational techniques, the sub and supersolutions method and some a priori bounds. Both Dirichlet and Neumann homogeneous boundary conditions are considered. As a byproduct, we deduce some existence and uniqueness results. Finally, as an application, we derive some positivity results for indefinite concave-convex type problems.

Positive steady states of an indefinite equation with a nonlinear boundary condition: existence, multiplicity, stability and asymptotic profiles

We investigate positive steady states of an indefinite superlinear reaction-diffusion equation arising from population dynamics, coupled with a nonlinear boundary condition. Both the equation and the boundary condition depend upon a positive parameter λλ, which is inversely proportional to the diffusion rate. We establish several multiplicity results when the diffusion rate is large and analyze the asymptotic profiles and the stability properties of these steady states as the diffusion rate grows to infinity. In particular, our results show that in some cases bifurcation from zero and from infinity occur at λ=0λ=0. Our approach combines variational and bifurcation techniques.
