Cranked Skyrme-Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approach for a mean-field description of nuclear rotations near the drip line

To describe the yrast states in weakly bound nuclei, I directly solve the coordinate-space cranked Skyrme-Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov equation on a three-dimensional lattice with the continuum states discretized in a box. After the numerical demonstration for the ground-state band in a medium-mass nucleus, I apply the newly-developed method to neutron-rich even-$N$ Mg isotopes. I find that the appearance of the significantly low $I^π=2^+$ state in $^{40}$Mg is mainly due to the suppression of pairing. The calculation predicts that the $2^+$ state in $^{42}$Mg appears as high in energy as in $^{34\text{-}38}$Mg whereas the triaxial deformation is enhanced in non-zero spin states. The present numerical framework offers a practical approach for investigating the near yrast states systematically and revealing structures unique in drip-line nuclei.

Super- and hyper-deformation in $^{60}$Zn, $^{62}$Zn, and $^{64}$Ge at high spins

Background: The observation of the superdeformed (SD) bands in $^{60,62}$Zn indicates that the particle number 30 is a magic particle number, where two and four neutron single-particles are considered to be promoted to the intruder $1g_{9/2}$ shell. However, the SD-yrast band in $^{62}$Zn is assigned negative parity. Purpose: I investigate various SD configurations in the rapidly rotating $^{60,62}$Zn and $^{64}$Ge, and attempt elucidating the different roles of the energy gaps at particle numbers 30 and 32. Method: I employ a nuclear energy-density functional (EDF) method: the configuration-constrained cranked Skyrme-Kohn-Sham approach is used to describe the rotational bands near the yrast line. Results: The negative-parity SD bands appear higher in energy than the positive-parity SD-yrast band in $^{60}$Zn by about 4 MeV, which is indicative of the SD doubly-magic nucleus. However, the energy gap in $^{64}$Ge is smaller $\sim 2\text{-}3$ MeV, though the quadrupole deformation of the SD states in $^{64}$Ge is greater than that of $^{60}$Zn. The present calculation predicts the occurrence of the hyperdeformed state in $^{60}$Zn and $^{64}$Ge at a high rotational frequency $\sim 2.0$ MeV$/\hbar$ due to the occupation of the $h_{11/2}$ shell. Conclusions: An SD-shell gap at particle number 30 and 32 appears at different deformations and the energy gap at particle number 32 is low, which make the SD structures of $^{62}$Zn unique, where the negative-parity SD states appear lower in energy than the positive-parity one.

KIDS density functional for deformed nuclei: Examples of the even-even Nd isotopes

Background: A global description of the ground-state properties of nuclei in a wide mass range in a unified manner is desirable not only for understanding exotic nuclei but for providing nuclear data for applications. Purpose: We demonstrate the KIDS functional describes the ground states appropriately with respect to the existing data and predictions for a possible application of the functional to all the nuclei by taking Nd isotopes as examples. Method: The Kohn-Sham-Bogoliubov equation is solved for the Nd isotopes with the neutron numbers ranging from 60 to 160 by employing the KIDS functionals constructed to satisfy both neutron-matter equation of state or neutron star observation and selected nuclear data. Results: Considering the nuclear deformation improves the description of the binding energies and radii. We find that the discrepancy from the experimental data is more significant for neutron-rich/deficient isotopes and this can be made isotope independent by changing the slope parameter of the symmetry energy. Conclusions: The KIDS functional is applied to the mid-shell nuclei for the first time. The onset and evolution of deformation are nicely described for the Nd isotopes. The KIDS functional is competent to a global fitting for a better description of nuclear properties in the nuclear chart.

Proton induced deuteron knockout reaction as a probe of an isoscalar proton-neutron pair in nuclei

The isoscalar $pn$ pair is expected to emerge in nuclei having the similar proton and neutron numbers but there is no clear experimental evidence for it. We aim to clarify the correspondence between the $pn$ pairing strength in many-body calculation and the triple differential cross section (TDX) of proton-induced deuteron knockout ($p,pd$) reaction on $^{16}$O. The radial wave function of the isoscalar $pn$ pair with respect to the center of $^{16}$O is calculated with the energy density functional (EDF) approach and is implemented in the distorted wave impulse approximation (DWIA) framework. The $pn$ pairing strength $V_0$ in the EDF calculation is varied and the corresponding change in the TDX is investigated. A clear $V_0$ dependence of the TDX is found for the $^{16}$O($p,pd$)$^{14}$N($1_2^+$) at $101.3$ MeV. The nuclear distortion is found to make the $V_0$ dependence stronger. Because of the clear $V_0$-TDX correspondence, the ($p,pd$) reaction will be a promising probe for the isoscalar $pn$ pair in nuclei. For quantitative discussion, further modification of the description of the reaction process will be necessary.

Signature dependent triaxiality for shape evolution from superdeformation in rapidly rotating $^{40}$Ca and $^{41}$Ca

We investigate the possible occurrence of the highly-elongated shapes near the yrast line in $^{40}$Ca and $^{41}$Ca at high spins on the basis of the nuclear energy-density functional method. Not only the superdeformed (SD) yrast configuration but the yrare configurations on top of the SD band are described by solving the cranked Skyme-Kohn-Sham equation in the three-dimensional coordinate-space representation. It is suggested that some of the excited SD bands undergo band crossings and develop to the hyperdeformation (HD) beyond $J \simeq 25 \hbar$ in $^{40}$Ca. We find that the change of triaxiality in response to rotation plays a decisive role for the shape evolution towards HD, and that this is governed by the signature quantum number of the last occupied orbital at low spins. This mechanism can be verified in an experimental observation of the positive-parity SD yrast signature-partner bands in $^{41}$Ca, one of which ($α=+1/2$) undergoes crossings with the HD band while the other ($α=-1/2$) shows the smooth evolution from the collective rotation at low spins to the non-collective rotation with oblate shape at the termination.

Enhanced collectivity of gamma vibration in neutron-rich Dy isotopes with N=108 - 110

Background: The $γ$ vibrational mode of excitation is an acknowledged collective mode in deformed nuclei. The collectivity depends on the details of the shell structure around the Fermi levels, in particular the presence of the orbitals that have the enhanced transition matrix elements of the non-axial quadrupole excitation. Quite recently, a sudden decrease in the excitation energy of the $γ$ vibration was observed at RIKEN RIBF for the neutron-rich Dy isotopes at $N=106$. Purpose: In the present work, by studying systematically the microscopic structure of the $γ$ vibration in the neutron-rich Dy isotopes with $N=98-114$, we try to understand the mechanism of the observed softening. Methods: The low-frequency modes of excitation in the neutron-rich rare-earth nuclei are described based on nuclear density-functional theory. We employ the Skyrme energy-density functionals (EDF) in the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculation for the ground states and in the Quasiparticle Random-Phase Approximation (QRPA) for the excitations. Results: The lowering of the excitation energy around $N=106$ is reproduced well by employing the SkM* and SLy4 functionals. We find the similar isotopic dependence of the excitation energy in the neutron-rich Er and Yb isotopes as well. Conclusions: The microscopic framework of the Skyrme-EDF based QRPA describes well the isotopic dependence of the energy of the $γ$ vibration in the well-deformed neutron-rich rare-earth nuclei. The strong collectivity at $N=108-110$ is expected as the Fermi level of neutrons lies just among the orbitals that play an important role in generating the collectivity around $N=106$.

Microscopic derivation of the Bohr-Mottelson collective Hamiltonian and its application to quadrupole shape dynamics

We discuss the nature of the low-frequency quadrupole vibrations from small-amplitude to large-amplitude regimes. We consider full five-dimensional quadrupole dynamics including three-dimensional rotations restoring the broken symmetries as well as axially symmetric and asymmetric shape fluctuations. Assuming that the time-evolution of the self-consistent mean field is determined by five pairs of collective coordinates and collective momenta, we microscopically derive the collective Hamiltonian of Bohr and Mottelson, which describes low-frequency quadrupole dynamics. We show that the five-dimensional collective Schrödinger equation is capable of describing large-amplitude quadrupole shape dynamics seen as shape coexistence/mixing phenomena. We summarize the modern concepts of microscopic theory of large-amplitude collective motion, which is underlying the microscopic derivation of the Bohr-Mottelson collective Hamiltonian.

Microscopic derivation of the quadrupole collective Hamiltonian for shape coexistence/mixing dynamics

Assuming that the time-evolution of the self-consistent mean field is determined by five pairs of collective coordinate and collective momentum, we microscopically derive the collective Hamiltonian for low-frequency quadrupole modes of excitation. We show that the five-dimensional collective Schrödinger equation is capable of describing large-amplitude quadrupole shape dynamics seen as shape coexistence/mixing phenomena. We focus on basic ideas and recent advances of the approaches based on the time-dependent mean-field theory, but relations to other time-independent approaches are also briefly discussed.

Proton-neutron pairing vibrations in N=Z nuclei: Precursory soft mode of isoscalar pairing condensation

L=0 proton-neutron ($pn$) pair-addition and pair-removal strengths in $^{40}$Ca and $^{56}$Ni are investigated by means of the $pn$ particle-particle random-phase approximation employing a Skyrme energy-density functional. It is found that the collectivity of the lowest $J^π= 1^+$ state in the adjacent odd-odd nuclei becomes stronger as the strength of the isoscalar (T=0) pairing interaction increases. The results suggest the emergence of the T=0 $pn$-pairing vibrational mode as a possible critical phenomenon toward the T=0 pairing condensation.

Shape evolution of giant resonances in Nd and Sm isotopes

Giant multipole resonances in Nd and Sm isotopes are studied by employing the quasiparticle-random-phase approximation on the basis of the Skyrme energy-density-functional method. Deformation effects on giant resonances are investigated in these isotopes which manifest a typical nuclear shape change from spherical to prolate shapes. The peak energy, the broadening, and the deformation splitting of the isoscalar giant monopole (ISGMR) and quadrupole (ISGQR) resonances agree well with measurements. The magnitude of the peak splitting and the fraction of the energy-weighted strength in the lower peak of the ISGMR reflect the nuclear deformation. The experimental data on ISGMR, ISGDR, and ISGQR are consistent with the nuclear-matter incompressibility $K \simeq 210-230$ MeV and the effective mass $m^*_0/m \simeq 0.8-0.9$. However, the high-energy octupole resonance (HEOR) in $^{144}$Sm seems to indicates a smaller effective mass, $m^*_0/m \simeq 0.7-0.8$. A further precise measurement of HEOR is desired to determine the effective mass.

Spin-isospin response of deformed neutron-rich nuclei in a self-consistent Skyrme energy-density-functional approach

We develop a new framework of the self-consistent deformed proton-neutron quasiparticle-random-phase approximation (pnQRPA), formulated in the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) single-quasiparticle basis. The same Skyrme force is used in both the HFB and pnQRPA calculations except in the proton-neutron particle-particle channel, where an S=1 contact force is employed. Numerical application is performed for Gamow-Teller (GT) strength distributions and $β$-decay rates in the deformed neutron-rich Zr isotopes located around the path of the rapid-neutron-capture process nucleosynthesis. It is found that the GT strength distributions are fragmented due to deformation. Furthermore we find that the momentum-dependent terms in the particle-hole residual interaction leads to a stronger collectivity of the GT giant resonance. The T=0 pairing enhances the low-lying strengths cooperatively with the T=1 pairing correlation, which shortens the $β$-decay half lives by at most an order of magnitude. The new calculation scheme reproduces well the observed isotopic dependence of the $β$-decay half lives of deformed $^{100-110}$Zr isotopes.

Shape transition and fluctuation in neutron-rich Cr isotopes around N = 40

The spherical-to-prolate shape transition in neutron-rich Cr isotopes from N = 34 to 42 is studied by solving the collective Schr\"odinger equation for the five-dimensional quadrupole collective Hamiltonian. The collective potential and inertial functions are microscopically derived with use of the constrained Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov plus local quasiparticle random-phase approximation method. Nature of the quadrupole collectivity of low-lying states is discussed by evaluating excitation spectra and electric quadrupole moments and transition strengths. The result of calculation indicates that Cr isotopes around 64Cr are prolately deformed but still possess transitional character; large-amplitude shape fluctuations dominate in their low-lying states.

Microscopic description of large-amplitude shape-mixing dynamics with local QRPA inertial functions

We introduce a microscopic approach to derive all the inertial functions in the five-dimensional quadrupole collective Hamiltonian. Local normal modes are evaluated on the constrained mean field in the quasiparticle random-phase approximation in order to derive the inertial functions. The collective Hamiltonians for neutron-rich Mg isotopes are determined with use of this approach, and the shape coexistence/mixing around the N = 20 region is analyzed.

Self-consistent description of nuclear photoabsorption cross sections

Several approaches to photonuclear reactions, based on the time-dependent density-functional theory, have been developed recently. The standard linearization leads to the random-phase approximation (RPA) or the quasiparticle-random-phase approximation (QRPA). We have developed a parallelized QRPA computer program for axially deformed nuclei. We also present a feasible approach to the (Q)RPA calculation, that is the finite amplitude method (FAM). We show results of photoabsorption cross sections for deformed nuclei using the QRPA and FAM calculations. Finally, the canonical-basis approach to the time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov method is presented, to demonstrate its feasibility and usefulness.

Shape changes and large-amplitude collective dynamics in neutron-rich Cr isotopes

Shape-phase transition in neutron-rich Cr isotopes around N=40 is investigated by employing the collective Hamiltonian approach. The inertial functions for large-amplitude vibration and rotation are evaluated by the local normal modes along the axial quadrupole collective coordinate using the Skyrme and pairing energy density functionals. The time-odd components of the mean fields are fully included in the derived masses. The low-lying spectra obtained by requantizing the collective Hamiltonian show an excellent agreement with the recent experimental data. Gradual change from spherical to axially deformed shapes in between N=34 and 38 is well described.

Shape fluctuations in the ground and excited 0+ states of 30Mg and 32Mg

Large-amplitude collective dynamics of shape phase transition in the low-lying states of 30-36Mg is investigated by solving the five-dimensional (5D) quadrupole collective Schroedinger equation. The collective masses and potentials of the 5D collective Hamiltonian are microscopically derived with use of the constrained Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov plus local quasiparticle RPA method. Good agreement with the recent experimental data is obtained for the excited 0+ states as well as the ground bands. For 30Mg, the shape coexistence picture that the deformed excited 0+ state coexists with the spherical ground state approximately holds. On the other hand, large-amplitude quadrupole-shape fluctuations dominate in both the ground and the excited 0+ states in 32Mg, so that the interpretation of 'coexisting spherical excited 0+ state' based on the naive inversion picture of the spherical and deformed configurations does not hold.

Canonical-basis time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory and linear-response calculations

We present simple equations for a canonical-basis formulation of the time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (TDHFB) theory. The equations are obtained from the TDHFB theory with an approximation that the pair potential is assumed to be diagonal in the canonical basis. The canonical-basis formulation significantly reduces the computational cost. We apply the method to linear-response calculations for even-even light nuclei and demonstrate its capability and accuracy by comparing our results with recent calculations of the quasi-particle random-phase approximation with Skyrme functionals. We show systematic studies of E1 strength distributions for Ne and Mg isotopes. The evolution of the low-lying pygmy strength seems to be determined by the interplay of several factors, including the neutron excess, separation energy, neutron shell effects, deformation, and pairing.

Dipole responses in Nd and Sm isotopes with shape transitions

Photoabsorption cross sections of Nd and Sm isotopes from spherical to deformed even nuclei are systematically investigated by means of the quasiparticle-random-phase approximation based on the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov ground states (HFB+QRPA) using the Skyrme energy density functional. The gradual onset of deformation in the ground states as increasing the neutron number leads to characteristic features of the shape phase transition. The calculation well reproduce the isotopic dependence of broadening and emergence of a double-peak structure in the cross sections without any adjustable parameter. We also find that the deformation plays a significant role for low-energy dipole strengths. The $E1$ strengths are fragmented and considerably lowered in energy. The summed $E1$ strength up to 10 MeV is enhanced by a factor of five or more.

Roles of deformation and neutron excess on the giant monopole resonance in neutron-rich Zr isotopes

We investigate the roles of deformation on the giant monopole resonance (GMR), particularly the mixing of the giant quadrupole resonance (GQR) and the effects of the neutron excess in the well-deformed nuclei around $^{110}$Zr and in the drip-line nuclei around $^{140}$Zr by means of the deformed quasiparticle-random-phase-approximation employing the Skyrme and the local pairing energy-density functionals. It is found that the isoscalar (IS) GMR has a two-peak structure, the lower peak of which is associated with the mixing between the ISGMR and the $K^π=0^{+}$ component of the ISGQR. The transition strengths of the lower peak of the ISGMR grows as the neutron number increases. In the drip-line nuclei, the neutron excitation is dominant over the proton excitation. We find for an isovector (IV) excitation the GMR has a four-peak structure due to the mixing of the IS and IV modes as well as the mixing of the $K^π=0^{+}$ component of the IVGQR. Besides the GMR, we find the threshold strength generated by neutrons only.

Skyrme-QRPA calculations for low-lying excitation modes in deformed neutron-rich nuclei

Low-frequency modes of excitation in deformed neutron-rich nuclei are studied by means of the quasiparticle random-phase approximation on the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov mean field. We investigate the microscopic structure of the soft $K^π=0^{+}$ modes systematically in neutron-rich Magnesium isotopes with $N=22, 24, 26$ and 28 close to the drip line, and it is found that the strong collectivity in $^{34}$Mg and $^{40}$Mg is acquired due to the coherent coupling between the $β$ vibration and the pairing vibration of neutrons. Microscopic structure of the $K^π=2^{+}$ modes changes gradually associated with the location of the Fermi level of neutrons, and it is found that the proton particle-hole excitation generating the $γ-$vibrational mode in $^{24}$Mg continues to play a key role in the near-drip-line nucleus $^{40}$Mg. The low-frequency octupole excitations are also investigated and the microscopic mechanism for the enhancement of transition strengths is discussed.
