Exact solution of a delay difference equation modeling traffic flow and their ultra-discrete limit

We consider a car-following model described by a delay difference equation and give its exact solutions that present propagation of a traffic jam. This model is a discrete-time version of the delayed optimal-velocity model; in the continuum limit, we recover the delay differential equation for this model and the exact solutions as well. We then work in the ultra-discrete limit, obtaining a delay cellular-automaton model, which successfully inherits the solutions. Also the dispersion relation for the present solutions suggests that a quick response of drivers does not always result in fast dissolution of a traffic jam.

Mathematical Modelings for Angiogenesis - A Cellular Automaton Model and its Continuous Model

Based on recent experiments with time-lapse fluorescent imaging, we propose a cellular automaton model for the dynamics of vascular endothelial cells (ECs) in angiogenic morphogenesis. The model successfully reproduces cell mixing behavior, elongation and bifurcation of blood vessels. The results suggest that the two-body interaction between ECs, which is repulsive in short distance and become attractive in moderately long distance, is essential to the dynamics of ECs, in particular, to the cell mixing behavior. The corresponding analytically solvable differential equation model is also proposed.

Spatial pattern of discrete and ultradiscrete Gray-Scott model

Ultradiscretization is a limiting procedure transforming a given difference equation into a cellular automaton. In addition the cellular automaton constructed by this procedure preserves the essential properties of the original equation, such as the structure of exact solutions for integrable equations. In this article, we propose a discretization and an ultradiscretization of Gray-Scott model which is not an integrable system and which gives various spatial patterns with appropriate initial data and parameters. The resulting systems give a travelling pulse and a self-replication pattern with appropriate initial data and parameters. The ultradiscrete system is directly related to the elementary cellular automaton Rule 90 which gives a Sierpinski gasket pattern. A $(2+1)$D ultradiscrete Gray-Scott model that gives a ring pattern, a self-replication pattern and a chaotic pattern, is also constructed.

Blow-up of solutions to a Dirichlet problem for the discrete semi-linear heat equation

In this paper, the initial and boundary problem of the difference equation which is a discretization of the semi-linear heat equation. The difference equation derived by discretizing the semi-linear heat equation has solutions which show characteristics corresponding to the characteristics of the blow-up solutions for the original equation. The initial and boundary problem for the original equation has blow-up solutions when a certain condition is met. We prove that when a similar condition as that of the original solution is met in the initial and boundary problem for the difference equation, the difference equation has blow-up solutions having characteristics corresponding to the characteristics of the blow-up solutions for the original equation.

The blow-up theorem of a discrete semilinear wave equation

In this paper, the discretization of a nonlinear wave equation whose nonlinear term is a power function is introduced. The difference equation derived by discretizing the nonlinear wave equation has solutions which show characteristics corresponding to the characteristics of the blow-up solutions for the original equation. The initial value problem for the original equation has blow-up solutions when a certain condition is met. We prove that when a similar condition as that of the original solution is met in the initial value problem for the introduced difference equation, the introduced difference equation has blow-up solutions having characteristics corresponding to the characteristics of the blow-up solutions for the original equation.

Existence and non-existence of global solutions for a discrete semilinear heat equation

Existence of global solutions to initial value problems for a discrete analogue of a d-dimensional semilinear heat equation is investigated. We prove that a parameter αin the partial difference equation plays exactly the same role as the parameter of nonlinearity does in the semilinear heat equation. That is, we prove non-existence of a non-trivial global solution for 0 < α\le 2/d, and, for α> 2/d, existence of non-trivial global solutions for sufficiently small initial data.
