DualSmoke: Sketch-Based Smoke Illustration Design with Two-Stage Generative Model

The dynamic effects of smoke are impressive in illustration design, but it is a troublesome and challenging issue for common users to design the smoke effect without domain knowledge of fluid simulations. In this work, we propose DualSmoke, two stage global-to-local generation framework for the interactive smoke illustration design. For the global stage, the proposed approach utilizes fluid patterns to generate Lagrangian coherent structure from the user's hand-drawn sketches. For the local stage, the detailed flow patterns are obtained from the generated coherent structure. Finally, we apply the guiding force field to the smoke simulator to design the desired smoke illustration. To construct the training dataset, DualSmoke generates flow patterns using the finite-time Lyapunov exponents of the velocity fields. The synthetic sketch data is generated from the flow patterns by skeleton extraction. From our user study, it is verified that the proposed design interface can provide various smoke illustration designs with good user usability. ILoveEye: Eyeliner Makeup Guidance System with Eye Shape Features

Drawing eyeliner is not an easy task for whom lacks experience in eye makeup. Everyone has a unique pair of eyes, so they need to draw eyeliner in a style that suits their eyes. We proposed ILoveEye, an interactive system that supports eye-makeup novices to draw natural and suitable eyeliner. The proposed system analyzes the shape of the user's eyes and classifies the eye types from camera frame. The system can recommend the eyeliner style to the user based on the designed recommendation rules. Then, the system can generate the original patterns corresponding to the eyeliner style, and the user can draw the eyeliner while observing the real-time makeup guidance. The user evaluation experiments are conducted to verify that the proposed ILoveEye system can help some users to draw reasonable eyeliner based on the specific eye shapes and improve their eye makeup skills.

dualFace:Two-Stage Drawing Guidance for Freehand Portrait Sketching

In this paper, we propose dualFace, a portrait drawing interface to assist users with different levels of drawing skills to complete recognizable and authentic face sketches. dualFace consists of two-stage drawing assistance to provide global and local visual guidance: global guidance, which helps users draw contour lines of portraits (i.e., geometric structure), and local guidance, which helps users draws details of facial parts (which conform to user-drawn contour lines), inspired by traditional artist workflows in portrait drawing. In the stage of global guidance, the user draws several contour lines, and dualFace then searches several relevant images from an internal database and displays the suggested face contour lines over the background of the canvas. In the stage of local guidance, we synthesize detailed portrait images with a deep generative model from user-drawn contour lines, but use the synthesized results as detailed drawing guidance. We conducted a user study to verify the effectiveness of dualFace, and we confirmed that dualFace significantly helps achieve a detailed portrait sketch. see http://www.jaist.ac.jp/~xie/dualface.html

Real-Time Quadrature Measurement of a Single-Photon Wavepacket with Continuous Temporal-Mode-Matching

Real-time controls based on quantum measurements are powerful tools for various quantum protocols. However, their experimental realization have been limited by mode-mismatch between temporal mode of quadrature measurement and that heralded by photon detection. Here, we demonstrate real-time quadrature measurement of a single-photon wavepacket induced by a photon detection, by utilizing continuous temporal-mode-matching between homodyne detection and an exponentially rising temporal mode. Single photons in exponentially rising modes are also expected to be useful resources for interactions with other quantum systems.

Continuous variable entanglement on a chip

Encoding quantum information in continuous variables (CV)---as the quadrature of electromagnetic fields---is a powerful approach to quantum information science and technology. CV entanglement---light beams in Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) states---is a key resource for quantum information protocols; and enables hybridisation between CV and single photon discrete variable (DV) qubit systems. However, CV systems are currently limited by their implementation in free-space optical networks: increased complexity, low loss, high-precision alignment and stability, as well as hybridisation, demand an alternative approach. Here we show an integrated photonic implementation of the key capabilities for CV quantum technologies---generation and characterisation of EPR beams in a photonic chip. Combined with integrated squeezing and non-Gaussian operation, these results open the way to universal quantum information processing with light.

Implementation of a quantum cubic gate by adaptive non-Gaussian measurement

We present a concept of non-Gaussian measurement composed of a non-Gaussian ancillary state, linear optics and adaptive heterodyne measurement, and on the basis of this we also propose a simple scheme of implementing a quantum cubic gate on a traveling light beam. In analysis of the cubic gate in the Heisenberg representation, we find that nonlinearity of the gate is independent from nonclassicality; the nonlinearity is generated solely by a classical nonlinear adaptive control in a measurement-and-feedforward process while the nonclassicality is attached by the non-Gaussian ancilla that suppresses excess noise in the output. By exploiting the noise term as a figure of merit, we consider the optimum non-Gaussian ancilla that can be prepared within reach of current technologies and discuss performance of the gate. It is a crucial step towards experimental implementation of the quantum cubic gate.

Experimental realization of a dynamic squeezing gate

Squeezing is a nonlinear Gaussian operation that is the key component in construction of other nonlinear Gaussian gates. In our implementation of the squeezing gate, the amount and the orientation of the squeezing can be controlled by an external driving signal with 1 MHz operational bandwidth. This opens a brand new area of dynamic Gaussian processing. In particular, the gate can be immediately employed as the feed-forward needed for the deterministic implementation of the quantum cubic gate, which is a key piece of universal quantum information processing.

Generating superposition of up-to three photons for continuous variable quantum information processing

We develop an experimental scheme based on a continuous-wave (cw) laser for generating arbitrary superpositions of photon number states. In this experiment, we successfully generate superposition states of zero to three photons, namely advanced versions of superpositions of two and three coherent states. They are fully compatible with developed quantum teleportation and measurement-based quantum operations with cw lasers. Due to achieved high detection efficiency, we observe, without any loss correction, multiple areas of negativity of Wigner function, which confirm strongly nonclassical nature of the generated states.

Generation and characterization of resource state for nonlinear cubic phase gate

Unitary non-Gaussian nonlinearity is one of the key components required for quantum computation and other developing applications of quantum information processing. Sufficient operation of this kind is still not available, but it can be approximatively implemented with help of a specifically engineered resource state constructed from individual photons. We present experimental realization and thorough analysis of such quantum resource state, and confirm that the state does indeed possess properties of a state produced by unitary dynamics driven by cubic nonlinearity.
