A second-order low-regularity correction of Lie splitting for the semilinear Klein--Gordon equation

The numerical approximation of the semilinear Klein--Gordon equation in the $d$-dimensional space, with $d=1,2,3$, is studied by analyzing the consistency errors in approximating the solution. By discovering and utilizing a new cancellation structure in the semilinear Klein--Gordon equation, a low-regularity correction of the Lie splitting method is constructed, which can have second-order convergence in the energy space under the regularity condition $(u,\partial_tu)\in L^\infty(0,T;H^{1+\frac{d}{4}}\times H^{\frac{d}{4}})$, where $d=1,2,3$ denotes the dimension of space. In one dimension, the proposed method is shown to have a convergence order arbitrarily close to $\frac53$ in the energy space for solutions in the same space, i.e. no additional regularity in the solution is required. Rigorous error estimates are presented for a fully discrete spectral method with the proposed low-regularity time-stepping scheme. Numerical examples are provided to support the theoretical analysis and to illustrate the performance of the proposed method in approximating both nonsmooth and smooth solutions of the semilinear Klein--Gordon equation.

Low regularity integrators via decorated trees

We introduce a general framework of low regularity integrators which allows us to approximate the time dynamics of a large class of equations, including parabolic and hyperbolic problems, as well as dispersive equations, up to arbitrary high order on general domains. The structure of the local error of the new schemes is driven by nested commutators which in general require (much) lower regularity assumptions than classical methods do. Our main idea lies in embedding the central oscillations of the nonlinear PDE into the numerical discretisation. The latter is achieved by a novel decorated tree formalism inspired by singular SPDEs with Regularity Structures and allows us to control the nonlinear interactions in the system up to arbitrary high order on the infinite dimensional (continuous) as well as finite dimensional (discrete) level.

Solving the linear semiclassical Schrödinger equation on the real line

The numerical solution of a linear Schrödinger equation in the semiclassical regime is very well understood in a torus $\mathbb{T}^d$. A raft of modern computational methods are precise and affordable, while conserving energy and resolving high oscillations very well. This, however, is far from the case with regard to its solution in $\mathbb{R}^d$, a setting more suitable for many applications. In this paper we extend the theory of splitting methods to this end. The main idea is to derive the solution using a spectral method from a combination of solutions of the free Schrödinger equation and of linear scalar ordinary differential equations, in a symmetric Zassenhaus splitting method. This necessitates detailed analysis of certain orthonormal spectral bases on the real line and their evolution under the free Schrödinger operator.

Uniformly accurate low regularity integrators for the Klein--Gordon equation from the classical to non-relativistic limit regime

We propose a novel class of uniformly accurate integrators for the Klein--Gordon equation which capture classical $c=1$ as well as highly-oscillatory non-relativistic regimes $c\gg1$ and, at the same time, allow for low regularity approximations. In particular, the schemes converge with order $τ$ and $τ^2$, respectively, under lower regularity assumptions than classical schemes, such as splitting or exponential integrator methods, require. The new schemes in addition preserve the nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) limit on the discrete level. More precisely, we will design our schemes in such a way that in the limit $c\to \infty$ they converge to a recently introduced class of low regularity integrators for NLS.

A general framework of low regularity integrators

We introduce a new general framework for the approximation of evolution equations at low regularity and develop a new class of schemes for a wide range of equations under lower regularity assumptions than classical methods require. In contrast to previous works, our new framework allows a unified practical formulation and the construction of the new schemes does not rely on any Fourier based expansions. This allows us for the first time to overcome the severe restriction to periodic boundary conditions, to embed in the same framework parabolic and dispersive equations and to handle nonlinearities that are not polynomial. In particular, as our new formalism does no longer require periodicity of the problem, one may couple the new time discretisation technique not only with spectral methods, but rather with various spatial discretisations. We apply our general theory to the time discretization of various concrete PDEs, such as the nonlinear heat equation, the nonlinear Schrödinger equation, the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation, the half wave and Klein--Gordon equations, set in $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^d$, $d \leq 3$ with suitable boundary conditions.

Analysis of exponential splitting methods for inhomogeneous parabolic equations

We analyze the convergence of the exponential Lie and exponential Strang splitting applied to inhomogeneous second-order parabolic equations with Dirichlet boundary conditions. A recent result on the smoothing properties of these methods allows us to prove sharp convergence results in the case of homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. When no source term is present and natural regularity assumptions are imposed on the initial value, we show full-order convergence of both methods. For inhomogeneous equations, we prove full-order convergence for the exponential Lie splitting, whereas order reduction to 1.25 for the exponential Strang splitting. Furthermore, we give sufficient conditions on the inhomogeneity for full-order convergence of both methods. Moreover our theoretical convergence results explain the severe order reduction to 0.25 of splitting methods applied to problems involving inhomogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. We include numerical experiments to underline the sharpness of our theoretical convergence results.

Asymptotic preserving schemes for the Klein-Gordon equation in the non-relativistic limit regime

We consider the Klein-Gordon equation in the non-relativistic limit regime, i.e. the speed of light c tending to infinity. We construct an asymptotic expansion for the solution with respect to the small parameter depending on the inverse of the square of the speed of light. As the first terms of this asymptotic can easily be simulated our approach allows us to construct numerical algorithms that are robust with respect to the large parameter c producing high oscillations in the exact solution.
