A new statistic on Dyck paths for counting 3-dimensional Catalan words

A 3-dimensional Catalan word is a word on three letters so that the subword on any two letters is a Dyck path. For a given Dyck path $D$, a recently defined statistic counts the number of Catalan words with the property that any subword on two letters is exactly $D$. In this paper, we enumerate Dyck paths with this statistic equal to certain values, including all primes. The formulas obtained are in terms of Motzkin numbers and Motzkin ballot numbers.

Arithmetical structures on bidents

An arithmetical structure on a finite, connected graph $G$ is a pair of vectors $(\mathbf{d}, \mathbf{r})$ with positive integer entries for which $(\operatorname{diag}(\mathbf{d}) - A)\mathbf{r} = \mathbf{0}$, where $A$ is the adjacency matrix of $G$ and where the entries of $\mathbf{r}$ have no common factor. The critical group of an arithmetical structure is the torsion part of the cokernel of $(\operatorname{diag}(\mathbf{d}) - A)$. In this paper, we study arithmetical structures and their critical groups on bidents, which are graphs consisting of a path with two "prongs" at one end. We give a process for determining the number of arithmetical structures on the bident with $n$ vertices and show that this number grows at the same rate as the Catalan numbers as $n$ increases. We also completely characterize the groups that occur as critical groups of arithmetical structures on bidents.

Allowed patterns of symmetric tent maps via commuter functions

We introduce a new technique to study pattern avoidance in dynamical systems, namely the use of a commuter function between non-conjugate dynamical systems. We investigate the properties of such a commuter function, specifically $h : [0,1] \to [0,1]$ satisfying $T_1 \circ h = h \circ T_μ$, where $T_μ$ denotes a symmetric tent map of height $μ$. We make use of this commuter function to prove strict inclusion of the set of allowed patterns of $T_μ$ in the set of allowed patterns of $T_1$.

Descents of $λ$-unimodal cycles in a character formula

We prove an identity conjectured by Adin and Roichman involving the descent set of $λ$-unimodal cyclic permutations. These permutations appear in formulas for characters of certain representations of the symmetric group. Such formulas have previously been proven algebraically. In this paper, we present a combinatorial proof for one such formula and discuss the consequences for the distribution of the descent set on cyclic permutations.

Cyclic permutations realized by signed shifts

The periodic (ordinal) patterns of a map are the permutations realized by the relative order of the points in its periodic orbits. We give a combinatorial characterization of the periodic patterns of an arbitrary signed shift, in terms of the structure of the descent set of a certain cyclic permutation associated to the pattern. Signed shifts are an important family of one-dimensional dynamical systems that includes shift maps and the tent map as particular cases. Defined as a function on the set of infinite words on a finite alphabet, a signed shift deletes the first letter and, depending on its value, possibly applies the complementation operation on the remaining word. For shift maps, reverse shift maps, and the tent map, we give exact formulas for their number of periodic patterns. As a byproduct of our work, we recover results of Gessel--Reutenauer and Weiss--Rogers and obtain new enumeration formulas for pattern-avoiding cycles.
