Random β-transformation on fat Sierpinski gasket

We consider the iterated function system (IFS) $$f_{\vec{q}}(\vec{z})=\frac{\vec{z}+\vec{q}}β,\vec{q}\in\{(0,0),(1,0),(0,1)\}.$$ As is well known, for $β= 2$ the attractor, $S_β$, is a fractal called the Sierpiński gasket(or sieve) and for $β>2$ it is also a fractal. Our goal is to study greedy, lazy and random $β$-transformations on the attractor for this IFS with $1<β<2$. For $1<β\leq 3/2$, $S_β$ is a triangle and it is shown that the greedy transformation $T_β$ and the lazy transformation $L_β$ are isomorphic and they both admit an absolutely continuous invariant measure. We show that all $β$-expansions of a point $\vec{z}$ in $S_β$ can be generated by a random map $K_β$ defined on $\{0,1\}^\mathbb{N}\times\{0,1,2\}^\mathbb{N}\times S_β$ and $K_β$ has a unique invariant measure of maximal entropy when $1<β\leqβ_*$, where $β_*\approx 1.4656$ is the root of $x^3-x^2-1=0$. We also show existence of a $K_β$-invariant probability measure, absolutely continuous with respect to $m_1\otimes m_2 \otimes λ_2$, where $m_1, m_2$ are product measures on $\{0,1\}^\mathbb{N},\{0,1,2\}^\mathbb{N}$, respectively, and $λ_2$ is the normalized Lebesgue measure on $S_β$. For $3/2<β\leq β^*$, where $β^*\approx 1.5437$ is the root of $x^3-2x^2+2x=2$, there are radial holes in $S_β$. In this case, $K_β$ is defined on $\{0,1\}^\mathbb{N}\times S_β$. We also show that it has a unique invariant measure of maximal entropy.

Dynamical behavior of alternate base expansions

We generalize the greedy and lazy $β$-transformations for a real base $β$ to the setting of alternate bases $\boldsymbolβ=(β_0,\ldots,β_{p-1})$, which were recently introduced by the first and second authors as a particular case of Cantor bases. As in the real base case, these new transformations, denoted $T_\boldsymbolβ$ and $L_\boldsymbolβ$ respectively, can be iterated in order to generate the digits of the greedy and lazy $\boldsymbolβ$-expansions of real numbers. The aim of this paper is to describe the dynamical behaviors of $T_\boldsymbolβ$ and $L_\boldsymbolβ$. We first prove the existence of a unique absolutely continuous (with respect to an extended Lebesgue measure, called the $p$-Lebesgue measure) $T_\boldsymbolβ$-invariant measure. We then show that this unique measure is in fact equivalent to the $p$-Lebesgue measure and that the corresponding dynamical system is ergodic and has entropy $\frac{1}{p}\log(β_{p-1}\cdots β_0)$. We then express the density of this measure and compute the frequencies of letters in the greedy $\boldsymbolβ$-expansions. We obtain the dynamical properties of $L_\boldsymbolβ$ by showing that the lazy dynamical system is isomorphic to the greedy one. We also provide an isomorphism with a suitable extension of the $β$-shift. Finally, we show that the $\boldsymbolβ$-expansions can be seen as $(β_{p-1}\cdots β_0)$-representations over general digit sets and we compare both frameworks.

Shrinking random $β$-transformation

For any $n\geq 3$, let $1<β<2$ be the largest positive real number satisfying the equation $$β^n=β^{n-2}+β^{n-3}+\cdots+β+1.$$ In this paper we define the shrinking random $β$-transformation $K$ and investigate natural invariant measures for $K$, and the induced tranformation of $K$ on a special subset of the domain. We prove that both transformations have a unique measure of maximal entropy. However, the measure induced from the intrinsically ergodic measure for $K$ is not the intrinsically ergodic measure for the induced system.

Subshift of finite type and self-similar sets

Let $K\subset \mathbb{R}$ be a self-similar set generated by some iterated function system. In this paper we prove, under some assumptions, that $K$ can be identified with a subshift of finite type. With this identification, we can calculate the Hausdorff dimension of $K$ as well as the set of elements in $K$ with unique codings using the machinery of Mauldin and Williams \cite{MW}. We give three different applications of our main result. Firstly, we calculate the Hausdorff dimension of the set of points of $K$ with multiple codings. Secondly, in the setting of $β$-expansions, when the set of all the unique codings is not a subshift of finite type, we can calculate in some cases the Hausdorff dimension of the univoque set. Motivated by this application, we prove that the set of all the unique codings is a subshift of finite type if and only if it is a sofic shift. This equivalent condition was not mentioned by de Vries and Komornik \cite[Theorem 1.8]{MK}. Thirdly, for the doubling map with asymmetrical holes, we give a sufficient condition such that the survivor set can be identified with a subshift of finite type. The third application partially answers a problem posed by Alcaraz Barrera \cite{Barrera}.

Induced Random $β$-transformation

In this article we study the first return map defined on the switch region induced by the greedy and lazy maps. In particular we study the allowable sequences of return times, and when the first return map is a generalised Lüroth series transformation. We show that there exists a countable collection of disjoint intervals $(\mathcal{I}_{n})_{n=1}^{\infty},$ such that all sequences of return times are permissible if and only if $β\in \mathcal{I}_{n}$ for some $n$. Moreover, we show that there exists a set $M\subseteq(1,2)$ of Hausdorff dimension $1$ and Lebesgue measure zero, for which the first return map is a generalised Lüroth series transformation if and only if $β\in M$.

On univoque points for self-similar sets

Let $K\subseteq\mathbb{R}$ be the unique attractor of an iterated function system. We consider the case where $K$ is an interval and study those elements of $K$ with a unique coding. We prove under mild conditions that the set of points with a unique coding can be identified with a subshift of finite type. As a consequence of this, we can show that the set of points with a unique coding is a graph-directed self-similar set in the sense of Mauldin and Williams \cite{MW}. The theory of Mauldin and Williams then provides a method by which we can explicitly calculate the Hausdorff dimension of this set. Our algorithm can be applied generically, and our result generalises the work of \cite{DKK}, \cite{K1}, \cite{K2}, and \cite{MK}.

Optimal expansions in non-integer bases

For a given positive integer $m$, let $A=\set{0,1,...,m}$ and $q \in (m,m+1)$. A sequence $(c_i)=c_1c_2 ...$ consisting of elements in $A$ is called an expansion of $x$ if $\sum_{i=1}^{\infty} c_i q^{-i}=x$. It is known that almost every $x$ belonging to the interval $[0,m/(q-1)]$ has uncountably many expansions. In this paper we study the existence of expansions $(d_i)$ of $x$ satisfying the inequalities $\sum_{i=1}^n d_iq^{-i} \geq \sum_{i=1}^n c_i q^{-i}$, $n=1,2,...$ for each expansion $(c_i)$ of $x$.

Transformations generating negative $β$-expansions

We introduce a family of dynamical systems that generate negative $β$-expansions and study the support of the invariant measure which is absolutely continuous with respect to Lebesgue measure. We give a characterization of the set of digit sequences that is produced by a typical member of this family of transformations. We discuss the meaning of greedy expansions in the negative sense, and show that there is no transformation in the introduced family of dynamical systems that generates negative greedy. However, if one looks at random algorithms, then it is possible to define a greedy expansion in base $-β$.
