Driving-induced stability with long-range effects

We give a sufficient condition under which an applied rotation on medium particles stabilizes a slow probe in the rotation center. The symmetric part of the stiffness matrix thus gets a positive Lamb shift with respect to equilibrium. For illustration we take diffusive medium particles with a self-potential in the shape of a Mexican hat, high around the origin. There is a short-range attraction between the medium particles and the heavier probe, all immersed in an equilibrium thermal bath. For no or small rotation force on the medium particles, the origin is an unstable fixed point for the probe and the precise shape of the self-potential at large distances from the origin is irrelevant for the statistical force there. Above a certain rotation threshold, while the medium particles are still repelled from the origin, the probe stabilizes there and more details of the medium-density at large distance start to matter. The effect is robust around the quasi-static limit with rotation threshold only weakly depending on the temperature but the stabilization gets stronger at lower temperatures.

Locality and nonlocality of classical restrictions of quantum spin systems with applications to quantum large deviations and entanglement

We study the projection on classical spins starting from quantum equilibria. We show Gibbsianness or quasi-locality of the resulting classical spin system for a class of gapped quantum systems at low temperatures including quantum ground states. A consequence of Gibbsianness is the validity of a large deviation principle in the quantum system which is known and here recovered in regimes of high temperature or for thermal states in one dimension. On the other hand we give an example of a quantum ground state with strong nonlocality in the classical restriction, giving rise to what we call measurement induced entanglement, and still satisfying a large deviation principle.

Statistical forces from close--to--equilibrium media

We discuss the physical meaning and significance of statistical forces on quasi-static probes in first order around detailed balance for driven media. Exploiting the quasi-static energetics and the structure of (McLennan) steady nonequilibrium ensembles, we find that the statistical force obtains a nonequilibrium correction deriving from the excess work of driving forces on the medium in its relaxation after probe displacement. This reformulates, within a more general context, the recent result by N. Nakagawa (Phys. Rev. E 90, 022108 (2014)) on thermodynamic aspects of weakly nonequilibrium adiabatic pumping. It also proposes a possible operational tool for accessing some excess quantities in steady state thermodynamics. Furthermore, we show that the point attractors of a (macroscopic) probe coupled to a weakly driven medium realize the predictions of the minimum entropy production principle. Finally, we suggest a method to measure the relative dynamical activity through different transition channels, via the measurement of the statistical force induced by a suitable driving.

Low temperature behavior of nonequilibrium multilevel systems

We give a low temperature formula for the stationary occupations in Markovian systems away from detailed balance. Two applications are discussed, one to determine the direction of the ratchet current and one on population inversion. Both can take advantage of low temperature to improve the gain and typical nonequilibrium features. The new formula brings to the foreground the importance of kinetic aspects in terms of reactivities for deciding the levels with highest occupation and thus gives a detailed quantitative meaning to Landauer's blowtorch theorem at low temperature.

Dynamical fluctuations for semi-Markov processes

We develop an Onsager-Machlup-type theory for nonequilibrium semi-Markov processes. Our main result is an exact large time asymptotics for the joint probability of the occupation times and the currents in the system, establishing some generic large deviation structures. We discuss in detail how the nonequilibrium driving and the non-exponential waiting time distribution influence the occupation-current statistics. The violation of the Markov condition is reflected in the emergence of a new type of nonlocality in the fluctuations. Explicit solutions are obtained for some examples of driven random walks on the ring.

Computation of current cumulants for small nonequilibrium systems

We analyze a systematic algorithm for the exact computation of the current cumulants in stochastic nonequilibrium systems, recently discussed in the framework of full counting statistics for mesoscopic systems. This method is based on identifying the current cumulants from a Rayleigh-Schrodinger perturbation expansion for the generating function. Here it is derived from a simple path-distribution identity and extended to the joint statistics of multiple currents. For a possible thermodynamical interpretation, we compare this approach to a generalized Onsager-Machlup formalism. We present calculations for a boundary driven Kawasaki dynamics on a one-dimensional chain, both for attractive and repulsive particle interactions.

Canonical structure of dynamical fluctuations in mesoscopic nonequilibrium steady states

We give the explicit structure of the functional governing the dynamical density and current fluctuations for a mesoscopic system in a nonequilibrium steady state. Its canonical form determines a generalised Onsager-Machlup theory. We assume that the system is described as a Markov jump process satisfying a local detailed balance condition such as typical for stochastic lattice gases and for chemical networks. We identify the entropy current and the traffic between the mesoscopic states as extra terms in the fluctuation functional with respect to the equilibrium dynamics. The density and current fluctuations are coupled in general, except close to equilibrium where their decoupling explains the validity of entropy production principles.

Incoherent boundary conditions and metastates

In this contribution we discuss the role which incoherent boundary conditions can play in the study of phase transitions. This is a question of particular relevance for the analysis of disordered systems, and in particular of spin glasses. For the moment our mathematical results only apply to ferromagnetic models which have an exact symmetry between low-temperature phases. We give a survey of these results and discuss possibilities to extend them to some situations where many pure states can coexist. An idea of the proofs as well as the reformulation of our results in the language of Newman-Stein metastates are also presented.
