A proper motion study of the globular clusters M4, M12, M22, NGC 3201, NGC 6362 and NGC 6752

We derive relative proper motions of stars in the fields of globular clusters M4, M12, M22, NGC 3201, NGC 6362 and NGC 6752 based on a uniform data set collected between 1997 and 2008. We assign a membership class for each star with a measured proper motion, and show that these membership classes can be successfully used to eliminate field stars from color-magnitude diagrams of the clusters. They also allow for the efficient selection of rare objects such as blue/yellow/red stragglers and stars from the asymptotic giant branch. Tables with proper motions and photometry of over 87000 stars are made publicly available via the Internet.

The Clusters AgeS Experiment (CASE): Variable Stars in the Globular Cluster 47 Tucanae

Based on over 5400 BV images of 47 Tuc collected between 1998 and 2010 we obtained light curves of 65 variables, 21 of which are newly detected objects. New variables are located mostly just outside of the core in a region poorly studied by earlier surveys of the cluster. Among them there are four detached eclipsing binaries and five likely optical counterparts of X-ray sources. Two detached systems are promising targets for follow-up observations. We briefly discuss properties of the most interesting new variables.

A proper motion study of the globular cluster M55

We have derived the absolute proper motion (PM) of the globular cluster M55 using a large set of CCD images collected with the du Pont telescope between 1997 and 2008. We find (PM_RA*cos(DEC), PM_DEC) = (-3.31 +/- 0.10, -9.14 +/- 0.15) mas/yr relative to background galaxies. Membership status was determined for 16 945 stars with 14<V<21 from the central part of the cluster. The PM catalogue includes 52 variables of which 43 are probable members of M55. This sample is dominated by pulsating blue straggler stars but also includes 5 eclipsing binaries, three of which are main sequence objects. The survey also identified several candidate blue, yellow and red straggler stars belonging to the cluster. We detected 15 likely members of the Sgr dSph galaxy located behind M55. The average PM for these stars was measured to be (PM_RA*cos(DEC), PM_DEC)=(-2.23 +/- 0.14, -1.83 +/- 0.24) mas/yr.

Dwarf Nova V1040 Centauri and Variable Stars in its Vicinity

We present the results of a photometric campaign of the dwarf nova V1040 Cen. The light curve shows two normal outbursts with recurrence time ~ 40 days and amplitude ~ 2.5 mag. Quiescence data show oscillations with periods in the range ~ 0.1 days (2.4 h) to ~ 0.5 days (12 h) of unknown origin. We measured the orbital period of V1040 Cen to be P_orb=0.060458(80) days (1.451+-0.002 h). Based on the M_v-P_orb relation we found the distance of V1040 Cen to be 137+-31 pc. In this paper we also report the detection of eleven new variable stars in the field of the monitored dwarf nova.

The 2003 and 2005 superhumps in V1113 Cygni

We report CCD photometry of the cataclysmic variable V1113 Cygni. During two campaigns, lasting from May to August 2003 and from March to June 2005, we recorded two superoutburst. In the obtained light curves we detected clear superhumps with a mean period 0.07891(3) days (113.63(4) min). That fact confirms that the star is a member of SU UMa class of dwarf novae. During the first observed superoutburst the superhump period was decreasing with an enormous rate of $\dot P = -4.5(8)\times 10^{-4}$ which is one of the highest values ever observed in SU UMa systems.

The Cluster AgeS Experiment (CASE). Variable Stars in the Globular Cluster M55

We report time-series photometry for 55 variable stars located in the central part of the globular cluster M55. The sample includes 28 newly identified objects of which 13 are eclipsing binaries. Three of these are detached systems located in the turn-off region on the cluster color-magnitude diagram. Two of them are proper motion (PM) members of M55 and are excellent candidates for a detailed follow-up study aimed at a determination of the cluster age and distance. Other detached binaries are located along the unevolved part of the cluster main sequence. Most of the variables are cluster blue straggler stars. This group includes 35 SX Phe stars, two contact binaries, and one semi-detached binary. V60 is a low mass, short period algol with the less massive and cooler component filling its Roche lobe. The more massive component is an SX Phe variable. The orbital period of V60 increases at a rate of dP/P=3.0E-9. In addition to numerous variable blue stragglers we also report the detection of two red stragglers showing periodic variability. Both of these are PM members of M55. We note and discuss the observed paucity of contact binaries among unevolved main sequence stars in M55 and NGC 6752. This apparent paucity supports an evolution model in which the formation of contact binaries is triggered by stellar evolution at the main-sequence turn off.

CURious Variables Experiment (CURVE). CCD Photometry and Variable Stars in the field of open cluster NGC 637

We present VI photometry for the open cluster NGC 637 which is located in the Cassiopeia region. Morphology of cluster color-magnitude diagram indicates that it is a young object with age of a few million years. The apparent distance modulus of the cluster is 13.9<(m-M)_V<14.3, while reddening is 0.69<E(V-I)<0.73. We estimated the heliocentric distance as 2.6<d<3.3 kpc. We also report the identification of two variable stars in NGC 637. One of the variables is a non-radial pulsating beta Cep-type star. Other one is a likely ellipsoidal variable, however its pulsating nature can not be excluded.
