Sensitivity of the SHiP experiment to dark photons decaying to a pair of charged particles

Dark photons are hypothetical massive vector particles that could mix with ordinary photons. The simplest theoretical model is fully characterised by only two parameters: the mass of the dark photon m$_{γ^{\mathrm{D}}}$ and its mixing parameter with the photon, $\varepsilon$. The sensitivity of the SHiP detector is reviewed for dark photons in the mass range between 0.002 and 10 GeV. Different production mechanisms are simulated, with the dark photons decaying to pairs of visible fermions, including both leptons and quarks. Exclusion contours are presented and compared with those of past experiments. The SHiP detector is expected to have a unique sensitivity for m$_{γ^{\mathrm{D}}}$ ranging between 0.8 and 3.3$^{+0.2}_{-0.5}$ GeV, and $\varepsilon^2$ ranging between $10^{-11}$ and $10^{-17}$.

SND@LHC

We propose to build and operate a detector that, for the first time, will measure the process $pp\toνX$ at the LHC and search for feebly interacting particles (FIPs) in an unexplored domain. The TI18 tunnel has been identified as a suitable site to perform these measurements due to very low machine-induced background. The detector will be off-axis with respect to the ATLAS interaction point (IP1) and, given the pseudo-rapidity range accessible, the corresponding neutrinos will mostly come from charm decays: the proposed experiment will thus make the first test of the heavy flavour production in a pseudo-rapidity range that is not accessible by the current LHC detectors. In order to efficiently reconstruct neutrino interactions and identify their flavour, the detector will combine in the target region nuclear emulsion technology with scintillating fibre tracking layers and it will adopt a muon identification system based on scintillating bars that will also play the role of a hadronic calorimeter. The time of flight measurement will be achieved thanks to a dedicated timing detector. The detector will be a small-scale prototype of the scattering and neutrino detector (SND) of the SHiP experiment: the operation of this detector will provide an important test of the neutrino reconstruction in a high occupancy environment.

Raman spectroscopic signature of fractionalized excitations in the harmonic-honeycomb iridates $β$- and $γ$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$

The fractionalization of elementary excitations in quantum spin systems is a central theme in current condensed matter physics. The Kitaev honeycomb spin model provides a prominent example of exotic fractionalized quasiparticles, composed of itinerant Majorana fermions and gapped gauge fluxes. However, identification of the Majorana fermions in a three-dimensional honeycomb lattice remains elusive. Here we report spectroscopic signatures of fractional excitations in the harmonic-honeycomb iridates $β$- and $γ$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$. Using polarization resolved Raman spectroscopy, we find that the dynamical Raman response of $β$- and $γ$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ features a broad scattering continuum with distinct polarization and composition dependence. The temperature dependence of the Raman spectral weight is dominated by the thermal damping of fermionic excitations. These results suggest the emergence of Majorana fermions from spin fractionalization in a three-dimensional Kitaev-Heisenberg system.

Magnetic order and spin dynamics in La2O2Fe2OSe2 probed by 57Fe-Moessbauer, 139La-NMR, and muon spin relaxation spectroscopy

We present a detailed local probe study of the magnetic order in the oxychalcogenide La2O2Fe2OSe2 utilizing 57Fe Moessbauer, 139La NMR, and muon spin relaxation spectroscopy. This system can be regarded as an insulating reference system of the Fe arsenide and chalcogenide superconductors. From the combination of the local probe techniques we identify a non-collinear magnetic structure similar to Sr2F2Fe2OS2. The analysis of the magnetic order parameter yields an ordering temperature TN = 90.1 K and a critical exponent of beta = 0.133, which is close to the 2D Ising universality class as reported in the related oxychalcogenide family.

Evidence for Dimer Crystal Melting in the Frustrated Spin-Ladder BiCu2PO6

In the spin ladder compound BiCu$_2$PO$_6$ there exists a decisive dynamics of spin excitations that we classify and characterize using inelastic light scattering. We observe low-energy singlets and a broad triplon continuum extending from 36 cm$^{-1}$ to 700 cm$^{-1}$ in ($aa$), ($bb$), and ($cc$) light scattering polarizations. Though isolated spin ladder physics can roughly account for the observed excitations at high energies, frustration and interladder interactions need to be considered to fully describe the spectral distribution and scattering selection rules at low and intermediate energies. More significantly, an interladder singlet bound mode at 24 cm$^{-1}$, lying below the continuum, shows its largest scattering intensity in interladder ($ab$) polarization. In contrast, two intraladder bound states at 62 cm$^{-1}$ and 108 cm$^{-1}$ with energies comparable to the continuum are observed with light polarization along the leg ($bb$) and the rung ($cc$). We attribute the rich spectrum of singlet bound modes to a melting of a dimer crystal. Our study provides evidence for a Z$_2$ quantum phase transition from a dimer to a resonating valence bond state driven by singlet fluctuations.

Coupling of spin and lattice modes in the S=1/2 two-dimensional antiferromagnet K$_{2}$V$_{3}$O$_{8}$ with magneto-dielectric couplings

Lattice dynamics and magnetic excitations are investigated to elucidate the origin of magneto-dielectric effects in the S=1/2 two-dimensional quantum spin compound K$_2$V$_3$O$_8$. We find evidence for lattice instabilities at 110 K and 60 K as optical phonon anomalies and a soft mode at 26 cm$^{-1}$ in A$_1$ symmetry. Two-magnon excitations in B$_1$ symmetry show an unconventional double-peak structure and temperature dependence. This suggests the existence of a split mode near the zone boundary caused by a mixing of spin and lattice modes.

Persistence of singlet fluctuations in the coupled spin tetrahedra system Cu2Te2O5Br2 revealed by high-field magnetization and 79Br NQR - 125Te NMR

We present high-field magnetization and $^{79}$Br nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) and $^{125}$Te nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) studies in the weakly coupled Cu$^{2+}$ ($S=1/2$) tetrahedral system Cu$_2$Te$_2$O$_5$Br$_2$. The field-induced level crossing effects were observed by the magnetization measurements in a long-ranged magnetically ordered state which was confirmed by a strong divergence of the spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 at T0=13.5 K. In the paramagnetic state, 1/T1 reveals an effective singlet-triplet spin gap much larger than that observed by static bulk measurements. Our results imply that the inter- and the intra-tetrahedral interactions compete, but at the same time they cooperate strengthening effectively the local intratetrahedral exchange couplings. We discuss that the unusual feature originates from the frustrated intertetrahedral interactions.

AC Susceptibility and Electron Spin Resonance Studies of Spin Dynamics in n Ba$_3$NbFe$_3$Si$_2$O$_{14}$: A Geometrically Frustrated Lattice

We report ac susceptibility and high-frequency electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements on the geometrically frustrated compound Ba$_3$NbFe$_3$Si$_2$O$_{14}$ with the Néel temperature $T_N=27 K$. An unusually large frequency-dependence of ac susceptibility in the temperature range of 20 - 100 K reveals a spin-glass-like behavior, signalling the presence of frustration related slow magnetic fluctuations. ESR experiments show a multi-step magnetic and spin chirality ordering process. For temperatures above 30 K, the weak temperature dependence of the ESR linewidth $ΔH_{pp}\propto T^{-p}$ with $p=0.8$ evidences the development of short-range correlated spin clusters. The critical broadening with $p =1.8$, persisting down to 14 K, indicates the coexistence of the short-range ordered spin clusters within a helically ordered state. Below 9.5 K, the anomalously large decrease of the linewidth reveals the stabilization of a long-range ordered state with one chirality.

Anomalous low-energy phonons in nearly tetragonal BiFeO3 thin films

We present evidence for a concomitant structural and ferroelectric transformation around $T_S\sim 360$ K in multiferroic BiFeO$_3$/LaAlO$_3$ thin films close to the tetragonal phase. Phonon excitations are investigated by using Raman scattering as a function of temperature. The low-energy phonon modes at 180-260 cm$^{-1}$ related to the FeO$_6$ octahedron tilting show anomalous behaviors upon cooling through $T_S$; (i) a large hardening amounting to 15 cm$^{-1}$, (ii) an increase of intensity by one order of magnitude, and (iii) an appearance of a dozen new modes. In contrast, the high-frequency modes exhibit only weak anomalies. This suggests an intimate coupling of octahedron tilting to ferroelectricity leading to a simultaneous change of structural and ferroelectric properties.

Existence of Orbital Order and its Fluctuation in Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ Revealed by X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy

We performed temperature dependent X-ray linear dichroism (XLD) experiments on an iron pnictide system, Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ with $x$=0.00 and 0.05, to experimentally verify existence of orbital ordering (OO). We observed clear XLD in polarization dependent X-ray absorption spectra of Fe $L$ edges. By exploiting the difference in the temperature dependent behaviors, we were able to separate OO and structure contributions to XLD. The observed OO signal indicates different occupation numbers for $d_{yz}$ and $d_{zx}$ orbitals and supports existence of a ferro-OO. The results are also consistent with the theoretical prediction. Moreover, we find substantial OO signal above the transition temperature, which suggests that OO fluctuation exists well above the transition temperature.

Iron pnictides: Single crystal growth and effect of doping on structural, transport and magnetic properties

We demonstrate the preparation of large, free standing iron pnictide single crystals with a size up to 20 x 10 x 1 mm3 using solvents in zirconia crucibles under argon atmosphere. Transport and magnetic properties are investigated to study the effect of potassium doping on the structural and superconducting property of the compounds. The spin density wave (SDW) anomaly at Ts ~138 K in BaFe2As2 single crystals from self-flux shifts to Ts ~85 K due to Sn solvent growth. We show direct evidence for an incorporation of Sn on the Fe site. The electrical resistivity data show a sharp superconducting transition temperature Tc~38.5 K for the single crystal of Ba0.68K0.32Fe2As2. A nearly 100% shielding fraction and bulk nature of the superconductivity for the single crystal were confirmed by magnetic susceptibility data. A sharp transition Tc~25 K occurred for the single crystal of Sr0.85K0.15Fe2As2. There is direct evidence for a coexistence of the SDW and superconductivity in the low doping regime of Sr1-xKxFe2As2 single crystals. Structural implications of the doping effects as well as the coexistence of the two order parameters are discussed.

Magnetite: Raman study of the high-pressure and low-temperature effects

We report the results of a low-temperature (300K-15K) high-pressure (up to 22GPa) Raman study of the Verwey transition in magnetite (Fe3O4). We use additional Raman modes observed below the Verwey transition to determine how the transition temperature changes with the quasihydrostatic pressure. Increase of the pressure results in the linear decrease of the Verwey transition temperature, with no discontinuity. The corresponding pressure coefficient dTV/dP is found to be ~ -5.2 K/GPa. Such a decrease is substantially larger than the one predicted by the mean-field Coulomb interaction model of the transition.

Self-energy effects and electron-phonon coupling in Fe-As superconductors

We report on Raman scattering experiments of the undoped SrFe2As2 and superconducting Sr0.85K0.15Fe2As2 (Tc=28K) and Ba0.72K0.28Fe2As2 (Tc=32K) single crystals. The frequency and linewidth of the B1g mode at 210 cm-1 exhibits an appreciable temperature dependence induced by the superconducting and spin density wave transitions. We give estimates of the electron-phonon coupling related to this renormalization. In addition, we observe a pronounced quasi-elastic Raman response for the undoped compound, suggesting persisting magnetic fluctuations to low temperatures. In the superconducting state the renormalization of an electronic continuum is observed with a threshold energy of 61cm-1.

AC susceptibility and $^{51}$V NMR study of MnV$_2$O$_4$

We report $^{51}$V zero-field NMR of manganese vanadate spinel of MnV$_2$O$_4$, together with both ac and dc magnetization measurements. The field and temperature dependence of ac susceptibilities show a reentrant-spin-glass-like behavior below the ferrimagnetic(FEM) ordering temperature. The zero-field NMR spectrum consists of multiple lines ranging from 240 MHz to 320 MHz. Its temperature dependence reveals that the ground state is given by the simultaneous formation of a long-range FEM order and a short-range order component. We attribute the spin-glass-like anomalies to freezing and fluctuations of the short-range ordered state caused by the competition between spin and orbital ordering of the V site.

Low temperature mixed spin state of Co3+ in LaCoO3 evidenced from Jahn-Teller lattice distortions

One- and multi-phonon excitations of the single crystalline LaCoO3 were studied using Raman spectroscopy in the temperature region of 5 K - 300 K. First-order Raman spectra show a larger number of phonon modes than allowed for the rhombohedral structure. Additional phonon modes are interpreted in terms of activated modes due to lattice distortions, arising from the Jahn-Teller (JT) activity of the intermediate-spin (IS) state of Co3+ ions. In particular, the 608-cm-1 stretching-type mode shows anomalous behavior in peak energy and scattering intensity as a function of temperature. The anomalous temperature dependence of the second-order phonon excitations spectra is in accordance with the Franck-Condon mechanism that is characteristic for a JT orbital order.

Hole stripe and orbital fluctuating state in LaMnO$_{3+δ}$ ($0.085\leq δ\leq0.125$) unveiled by Raman spectroscopy

Giant softening by 30 cm$^{-1}$ of the 490- and 620-cm$^{-1}$ modes is observed by Raman scattering measurements below the Curie temperature of single crystalline LaMnO$_{3+δ}$ ($0.085\leq δ\leq0.125$). A pseudogap-like electronic continuum and a Fano antiresonance at 144 cm$^{-1}$ appear below the charge ordering temperature. This gives evidence for the presence of an orbital fluctuating state and the formation of a hole stripe, respectively. This is further corroborated by a unstructured broadening and shifting of multiphonon features with increasing doping $δ$. Our study suggests the significance of double exchange mechanism in the charged ordered insulating state.

Orbiton-mediated multi-phonon scattering in La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$MnO$_3$

We report on Raman scattering measurements of single crystalline La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$MnO$_3$ ($x$=0, 0.06, 0.09 and 0.125), focusing on the high frequency regime. We observe multi-phonon scattering processes up to fourth-order which show distinct features: (i) anomalies in peak energy and its relative intensity and (ii) a pronounced temperature-, polarization-, and doping-dependence. These features suggest a mixed orbiton-phonon nature of the observed multi-phonon Raman spectra.

Existence of orbital polarons in ferromagnetic insulating La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$MnO$_{3}$ (0.11$<x<$0.14) evidenced by giant phonon softening

We present an inelastic light scattering study of single crystalline (La$_{1-y}$Pr$_y$)$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$MnO$_3$ ($0\leq x\leq0.14$,$y=0$ and $x=1/8$,$0\leq y\leq0.5$). A giant softening up to 20 - 30 cm$^{-1}$ of the Mn-O breathing mode has been observed only for the ferromagnetic insulating (FMI) samples ($0.11\leq x \leq 0.14$) upon cooling below the Curie temperature. With increasing Pr-doping the giant softening is gradually suppressed. This is attributed to a coupling of the breathing mode to orbital polarons which are present in the FMI phase.

Strong anisotropy of superexchange in the copper-oxygen chains of La_{14-x}Ca_{x}Cu_{24}O_{41}

Electron spin resonance data of Cu^{2+} ions in La_{14-x}Ca_{x}Cu_{24}O_{41} crystals (x=9,11,12) reveal a very large width of the resonance line in the paramagnetic state. This signals an unusually strong anisotropy of ~10% of the isotropic Heisenberg superexchange in the Cu-O chains of this compound. The strong anisotropy can be explained by the specific geometry of two symmetrical 90 degree Cu-O-Cu bonds, which boosts the importance of orbital degrees of freedom. Our data show the apparent limitations of the applicability of an isotropic Heisenberg model to the low dimensional cuprates.
