Ultracold bosons with short-range interaction in regular optical lattices

During the last decade, many exciting phenomena have been experimentally observed and theoretically predicted for ultracold atoms in optical lattices. This paper reviews these rapid developments concentrating mainly on the theory. Different types of the bosonic systems in homogeneous lattices of different dimensions as well as in the presence of harmonic traps are considered. An overview of the theoretical methods used for these investigations as well as of the obtained results is given. Available experimental techniques are presented and discussed in connection with theoretical considerations. Eigenstates of the interacting bosons in homogeneous lattices and in the presence of harmonic confinement are analysed. Their knowledge is essential for understanding of quantum phase transitions at zero and finite temperature.

Equilibration and prethermalization in the Bose-Hubbard and Fermi-Hubbard models

We study the Bose and Fermi Hubbard model in the (formal) limit of large coordination numbers $Z\gg1$. Via an expansion into powers of $1/Z$, we establish a hierarchy of correlations which facilitates an approximate analytical derivation of the time-evolution of the reduced density matrices for one and two sites etc. With this method, we study the quantum dynamics (starting in the ground state) after a quantum quench, i.e., after suddenly switching the tunneling rate $J$ from zero to a finite value, which is still in the Mott regime. We find that the reduced density matrices approach a (quasi) equilibrium state after some time. For one lattice site, this state can be described by a thermal state (within the accuracy of our approximation). However, the (quasi) equilibrium state of the reduced density matrices for two sites including the correlations cannot be described by a thermal state. Thus, real thermalization (if it occurs) should take much longer time. This behavior has already been observed in other scenarios and is sometimes called ``pre-thermalization.'' Finally, we compare our results to numerical simulations for finite lattices in one and two dimensions and find qualitative agreement.

Phase diagram of quasi-two-dimensional bosons in laser speckle potential

We have studied the phase diagram of a quasi-two-dimensional interacting Bose gas at zero temperature in the presence of random potential created by laser speckles. The superfluid fraction and the fraction of particles with zero momentum are obtained within the mean-field Gross-Pitaevskii theory and in diffusion Monte Carlo simulations. We find a transition from the superfluid to the insulating state, when the strength of the disorder grows. Estimations of the critical parameters are compared with the predictions of the percolation theory in the Thomas-Fermi approximation. Analytical expressions for the zero-momentum fraction and the superfluid fraction are derived in the limit of weak disorder and weak interactions within the framework of the Bogoliubov theory. Limits of validity of various approximations are discussed.

Propagation of quantum correlations after a quench in the Mott-insulator regime of the Bose-Hubbard model

We study a quantum quench in the Bose-Hubbard model where the tunneling rate $J$ is suddenly switched from zero to a finite value in the Mott regime. In order to solve the many-body quantum dynamics far from equlibrium, we consider the reduced density matrices for a finite number (one, two, three, etc.) of lattice sites and split them up into on-site density operators, i.e., the mean field, plus two-point and three-point correlations etc. Neglecting three-point and higher correlations, we are able to numerically simulate the time-evolution of the few-site density matrices and the two-point quantum correlations (e.g., their effective light-cone structure) for a comparably large number ${\cal O}(10^3)$ of lattice sites.

Condensate fraction of cold gases in non-uniform external potential

Exact calculation of the condensate fraction in multi-dimensional inhomogeneous interacting Bose systems which do not possess continuous symmetries is a difficult computational problem. We have developed an iterative procedure which allows to calculate the condensate fraction as well as the corresponding eigenfunction of the one-body density matrix. We successfully validate this procedure in diffusion Monte Carlo simulations of a Bose gas in an optical lattice at zero temperature. We also discuss relation between different criteria used for testing coherence in cold Bose systems, such as fraction of particles that are superfluid, condensed or are in the zero-momentum state.

Dark solitons near the Mott-insulator--superfluid phase transition

Dark solitons of ultracold bosons in the vicinity of the Mott-insulator--superfluid phase transition are studied. Making use of the Gutzwiller ansatz we have found antisymmetric eigenstates corresponding to standing solitons, as well as propagating solitons created by phase imprinting. Near the phase boundary, superfluidity has either a particle or a hole character depending on the system parameters, which greatly affects the characteristics of both types of solitons. Within the insulating Mott regions, soliton solutions are prohibited by lack of phase coherence between the lattice sites. Linear and modulational stability show that the soliton solutions are sensitive to small perturbations and, therefore, unstable. In general, their lifetimes differ for on-site and off-site modes. For the on-site modes, there are small areas between the Mott-insulator regions where the lifetime is very large, and in particular much larger than that for the off-site modes.

Effects of Interactions and Temperature in Disordered Ultra-Cold Bose Gases

We simulate ultra-cold interacting Bosons in quasi-one-dimensional, incommensurate optical lattices. In the tight-binding limit, these lattices have pseudo-random on-site energies and thus can potentially lead to Anderson localization. We explore the parameter regimes that lead to Anderson localization and investigate the role of repulsive interactions, harmonic confinement and finite temperature. We find that interactions can obscure the exponential localization characteristic of Anderson localization, thus impeding the direct observation of this phenomenon when interactions are present.
