Understanding $J/ψ$ and $ψ'$ production using a modified version of Non-Relativistic Quantum Chromodynamics

There is serious disagreement between the predictions of Non-Relativistic Quantum Chromodynamics (NRQCD) and the data on $J/ψ$ polarisation which has persisted for almost a quarter of a century. We find that if we account for the effect of perturbative soft gluons on the intermediate charm-anticharm octet states in NRQCD then the polarisation problem can be resolved. In addition, this model, when used to fit the Run 1 data on $J/ψ$ and $ψ'$ production from the CDF experiment at Tevatron, gives good fits and yields values of (energy-independent) non-perturbative parameters. These, in turn, can be used to make parameter-free predictions for $J/ψ$ and $ψ'$ data from the CMS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider and the predictions are in excellent agreement with the CMS data.

Tera-Zooming in on light (composite) axion-like particles

The Tera-Z phase of future $e^+ e^-$ colliders, FCC-ee and CepC, is a goldmine for exploring $Z$ portal physics. We focus on axion-like particles (ALPs) that can be produced via $Z$ decays with a monochromatic photon. As a template model, we consider composite Higgs models with a light pseudo-scalar that couples through the Wess-Zumino-Witten term to the electroweak gauge bosons. For both photophilic and photophobic cases, we show that the Tera-Z can probe composite scales up to $100$s of TeV, well beyond the capability of the LHC and current precision physics. Our results also apply to generic ALPs and, in particular, severely constrain models that explain the muon $g-2$ anomaly.

KK Higgs produced in association with a top quark pair in the bulk RS Model

We present a search strategy for the first Kaluza-Klein (KK) mode of the Higgs boson in the framework of the Randall-Sundrum (RS) model with a deformed metric. We study the production of this massive excitation in association with a ttbar pair at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The KK Higgs primarily decays into a boosted ttbar final state and we then end up with an interesting four-top final state of which two are boosted. The boosted products in the final state improve the sensitivity for the search of the KK Higgs in this channel whose production cross-section is otherwise rather small. Our results suggest that masses of the KK Higgs resonance upto about 1.2 TeV may be explorable at the highest planned luminosities of the LHC. Beyond this mass, the KK Higgs cross-section is too tiny for it to be explored at the LHC and may be possible only at a future higher energy collider.

A Higgs in the Warped Bulk and LHC signals

Warped models with the Higgs in the bulk can generate light Kaluza-Klein (KK) Higgs modes consistent with the electroweak precision analysis. The first KK mode of the Higgs (h_{1}) could lie in the 1-2 TeV range in the models with a bulk custodial symmetry. We find that the h_{1} is gaugephobic and decays dominantly into a t\bar{t} pair. We also discuss the search strategy for h_{1} decaying to t\bar{t} at the Large Hadron Collider. We used substructure tools to suppress the large QCD background associated with this channel. We find that h_{1} can be probed at the LHC run-2 with an integrated luminosity of 300 fb^{-1}.

Bulk RS models, Electroweak Precision tests and the 125 GeV Higgs

We present upto date electroweak fits of various Randall Sundrum (RS) models. We consider the bulk RS model, deformed RS and the custodial RS models. For the bulk RS case we find the lightest Kaluza Klein (KK) mode of the gauge boson to be $\sim 8$ TeV while for the custodial case it is $\sim 3$ TeV. The deformed model is the least fine tuned of all which can give a good fit for KK masses $< 2$ TeV depending on the choice of the model parameters. We also comment on the fine tuning in each case.

Exploring the Inert Doublet Model through the dijet plus missing transverse energy channel at the LHC

In this study of the Inert Doublet Model (IDM), we propose that the dijet + missing transverse energy channel at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will be an effective way of searching for the scalar particles of the IDM. This channel receives contributions from gauge boson fusion, and $t-$channel production, along with contributions from $H^+$ associated production. We perform the analysis including study of the Standard Model (SM) background with assumed systematic uncertainty, and optimise the selection criteria employing suitable cuts on the kinematic variables to maximise the signal significance. We find that with high luminosity option of the LHC, this channel has the potential to probe the IDM in the mass range of up to about 400 GeV, which is not accessible through other leptonic channels. In a scenario with light dark matter of mass about 65 GeV, charged Higgs in the mass range of around 200 GeV provides the best possibility with a signal significance of about $2σ$ at an integrated luminosity of about 3000 fb$^{-1}$.

Warped $R-$Parity Violation

We consider a modified Randall-Sundrum (RS) framework between the Planck scale and the GUT scale. In this scenario, RS works as a theory of flavour and not as a solution to the hierarchy problem. The latter is resolved by supersymmetrising the bulk, so that the minimal supersymmetric standard model being the effective 4-dimensional theory. Matter fields are localised in the bulk in order to fit fermion-mass and mixing-data. If $R$-parity violating terms are allowed in the superpotential, their orders of magnitude throughout flavour space are then predicted, resulting in rich flavour textures. If the $R$-parity violating contributions to neutrino masses are somewhat suppressed, then lepton-number violating models exist which explain the neutrino oscillation data while not being in contradiction with current experimental bounds. Another promising model is one where baryon number is violated and Dirac neutrino masses result solely from fermion localisation. We sketch the likely discovery signatures of the baryon-number and the lepton-number violating cases.

R-Parity Violating Supersymmetry Explanation for Large t tbar Forward-Backward Asymmetry

We propose a supersymmetric explanation for the anomalously high forward backward asymmetry in top pair production measured by CDF and D0. We suppose that it is due to the t-channel exchange of a right-handed sbottom which couples to d_R and t_R, as is present in the R-parity violating minimal supersymmetric standard model. We show that all Tevatron and LHC experiments' t tbar constraints may be respected for a sbottom mass between 300 and 1200 GeV, and a large Yukawa coupling >2.2, yielding A_{FB} up to 0.18. The non Standard Model contribution to the LHC charge asymmetry parameter is Delta A_C^y=0.017-0.045, small enough to be consistent with current measurements but non-zero and positive, allowing for LHC confirmation in the future within 20 fb^-1. A small additional contribution to the LHC t tbar production cross-section is also predicted, allowing a further test. We estimate that 10 fb^-1 of LHC luminosity would be sufficient to rule out the proposal to 95% confidence level, if the measurements of the t tbar cross-section turn out to be centred on the Standard Model prediction.

Boosted Top Quark Signals for Heavy Vector Boson Excitations in a Universal Extra Dimension Model

In view of the fact that the $n = 1$ Kaluza-Klein (KK) modes in a model with a Universal Extra Dimension (UED), could mimic supersymmetry signatures at the LHC, it is necessary to look for the $n = 2$ KK modes, which have no analogues in supersymmetry. We discuss the possibility of searching for heavy $n = 2$ vector boson resonances -- especially the $g_2$ -- through their decays to a highly-boosted top quark-antiquark pair using recently-developed top-jet tagging techniques in the hadronic channel. It is shown that $t\bar{t}$ signals from the $n = 2$ gluon resonance are as efficient a discovery mode at the LHC as dilepton channels from the $γ_2$ and $Z_2$ resonances.

eta_c production at the Large Hadron Collider

We have studied the production of the 1S_0 charmonium state, eta_c, at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in the framework of Non-Relativistic Quantum Chromodynamics (NRQCD) using heavy-quark symmetry. We find that NRQCD predicts a large production cross-section for this resonance at the LHC even after taking account the small branching ratio of eta_c into two photons. We show that it will be possible to test NRQCD through its predictions for eta_c, with the statistics that will be achieved at the early stage of the LHC, running at a center of mass energy of 7 TeV with an integrated luminosity of 100 pb^{-1}

Gluon-initiated production of a Kaluza-Klein gluon in a Bulk Randall-Sundrum model

In the Bulk Randall-Sundrum model, the Kaluza-Klein excitations of the gauge bosons are the primary signatures. In particular, the search for the Kaluza-Klein (KK) excitation of the gluon at hadron colliders is of great importance in testing this model. At the leading order in QCD, the production of this KK-gluon proceeds only via q qbar-initial states. We study the production of KK-gluons from gluon initial states at next-to-leading order in QCD. We find that, even after including the sub-dominant KK-gluon loops at this order, the next-to-leading order (NLO) cross-section is tiny compared to the leading order cross-section and unlikely to impact the searches for this resonance at hardon colliders.

Tevatron constraint on the Kaluza-Klein gluon of the Bulk Randall-Sundrum model

The Bulk Randall-Sundrum model, where all Standard Model particles except the Higgs are free to propagate in the bulk, predicts the existence of Kaluza-Klein (KK) modes of the gluon with a large branching into top-antitop pairs. We study the production of the lowest KK gluon mode at the Tevatron energy and use the data on the top cross-section from the Run II of Tevatron to put a bound on the mass of the KK gluon. The resulting bound of 800 GeV, while being much smaller than the constraints obtained on the KK gluon mass from flavour-changing neutral currents, is the first, direct collider bound which is independent of the specificities of the model.

Next-to-Leading Order QCD Corrections to the Drell-Yan Cross Section in Models of TeV-Scale Gravity

The first results on next-to-leading order QCD corrections to graviton-induced processes in hadron collisions in models of TeV-scale gravity are presented focusing on the case of dilepton pair production in \bar p p and pp collisions. Distributions in the invariant mass Q, the longitudinal fraction x_F, the rapidity Y and the forward-backward asymmetry of the lepton pair are studied. The quantitative impact of the QCD corrections for searches of extra dimensions at hadron colliders is investigated. It turns out that at the LHC (\sqrt{S}=14 TeV) the K-factor is rather large (K=1.6) for large invariant mass Q of the lepton pair, indicating the importance of accounting for these QCD corrections in the experimental search for TeV-scale gravity. At the Tevatron, the K-factor does not substantially deviate from the Standard Model value. However, its inclusion is necessitated to make the cross-section stable with respect to scale variations.

Resonant slepton production at the LHC in models with an ultralight gravitino

We examine resonant slepton production at the LHC with gravitinos in the final state. The slepton undergoes gauge decay into a neutralino and a lepton, the neutralino decays into a photon and a gravitino. By measuring the transverse masses of the gamma- G and the l-gamma- G subsystems it is possible to accurately reconstruct both the slepton and neutralino masses. In some regions of parameter space the slepton decays directly into a lepton and gravitino, giving an identical experimental topology to W production (l missing E_T). We present the novel matrix element squared for lepton-gravitino production. A peak in the tail of the lepton-missing momentum transverse mass distribution of the W provides a signature for the process and an accurate measurement of the slepton mass. We display the search reach for the LHC and 300 fb^{-1} of integrated luminosity.

Searching for signals of minimal length in extra dimensional models using dilepton production at hadron colliders

Theories of quantum gravity suggest the existence of a minimal length scale. It is interesting to speculate what the consequences of the existence of such a length scale would be for models of large extra dimensions, in particular, the ADD model. When ADD model is conflated with the minimal length scale scenario, processes involving virtual exhange of gravitons cease to be ulraviolent divergent. We study the production of dileptons at hadron colliders as an example of a process mediated by virtual gravitons. We find that the bounds we derive on the effective string scale are significantly different (in fact, less stringent) from those derived in the conventional ADD model, both at the upgraded Tevatron and the Large Hadron Collider.

Combined fits to the supersymmetric explanation of anomalous lepton-photon-missing E_T events

The CDF experiment reported a lepton photon missing transverse energy (E_T) signal 3 sigma in excess of the Standard Model prediction in Tevatron Run I data. The excess can be explained by the resonant production of a smuon, which subsequently decays to a muon, a photon and a gravitino. Here, we perform combined fits of this model to the CDF gamma lepton missing E_T excess, the D0 measurement of the same channel and the CDF photon missing E_T channel. Although the rates of the latter two analyses are in agreement with the Standard Model prediction, our model is in good agreement with these data because their signal to background efficiency is low at the best-fit point. However, they help to constrain the model away from the best fit point.

Explaining Anomalous CDF mu gamma Missing-E_T Events With Supersymmetry

CDF recently reported an excess of events in the mu-gamma-missing E_T channel that disagrees with the Standard Model prediction. No such excess was observed in the e-gamma-mett channel. We explain the excess via resonant smuon production with a single dominant R-parity violating coupling lambda'_{211}, in the context of models where the gravitino is the lightest supersymmetric particle. The slepton decays to the lightest neutralino and a muon followed by neutralino decaying to a gravitino and photon. We determine a viable region of parameter space that fits the kinematical distributions of the Run I excess and illustrate the effect by examining the best fit point in detail. We provide predictions for an excess in the missing E_T and photon channel at Run I and Run II. Run II will decisively rule out or confirm our scenario.

Investigating the Supersymmetric Explanation of Anomalous CDF lepton(s) photon(s) Missing-E_T Events

The recent excess over the Standard Model prediction in the μγmissing-E_T channel reported by CDF can be well-explained by resonant smuon production with a single dominant R-parity violating coupling λ'_{211}, in the context of models where the gravitino is the lightest supersymmetric particle. The slepton decays to the lightest neutralino and a muon followed by neutralino decaying to a gravitino and photon. The kinematical distributions are fitted well by our hypothesis and we use them to constrain the available parameter space. The model also provides an explanation for the eeγγmissing-E_T event observed in Run I of the Tevatron by the CDF experiment. Our model predicts an excess of between 5 and 35 events in a γmissing-E_T channel at Run I. We provide predictions for signatures expected by the model at Run II.

Extra Dimensions: A View from the Top

In models with compact extra dimensions, where the Standard Model fields are confined to a 3+1 dimensional hyperplane, the $t \bar t$ production cross-section at a hadron collider can receive significant contributions from multiple exchange of KK modes of the graviton. These are carefully computed in the well-known ADD and RS scenarios, taking the energy dependence of the sum over graviton propagators into account. Using data from Run-I of the Tevatron, 95% C.L. bounds on the parameter space of both models are derived. For Run-II of the Tevatron and LHC, discovery limits are estimated.

Large Extra Dimensions at Linear Colliders

In this talk, I first present the motivation for theories wherein extra spacetime dimensions can be compactified to have large magnitudes. In particular, I discuss the Arkani-Hamed, Dimopoulos, Dvali (ADD) scenario. I present the constraints that have been derived on these models from current experiments and the expectations from future colliders. I concentrate particularly on the possibilities of probing these extra dimensions at future linear colliders.

Large extra dimensions and dijet production in $γγ$ collisions

We have studied dijet production in $γγ$ collisions with a view to probing the physics of large extra dimensions. The exchange of virtual spin-2 Kaluza-Klein excitations is found to modify the dijet cross-section substantially from its Standard Model value and allows the effective string scale to be probed to values between 2.5 and 6.4 TeV in the unpolarised case. In the case where the photons are polarised, the limits are seen to improve by roughly 20%. Dijet production in $γγ$ collisions is thus shown to be a very effective probe of large extra dimensions.

1P1 charmonium production at the Tevatron

The production of the ${}^1P_1$ charmonium state, $h_c$, at large-$p_T$ at the Tevatron is considered. The colour-octet contributions to this state are found to be dominant and give a reasonably large rate for the production of $h_c$. This should make it feasible to look for this resonance in the $J/ψ+π$ decay channel. This production rate is a prediction of NRQCD, and the observation of the $h_c$ at the Tevatron can, therefore, be used as a test of the colour-octet predictions of NRQCD.

Charmonium Production at the LHC

The analyses of large transverse momentum charmonium production at the Tevatron have shown that fragmentation of gluons is an important production mechanism. We study large-$p_T$ charmonium production in $pp$ collisions at the LHC, and find that due to the copious gluon production at this energy, the gluon fragmentation contribution completely overwhelms the fusion contribution and the charm quark fragmentation contribution. Our analysis shows that for $J/ψ$ production at the LHC, there is a significant event rate even for $p_T \sim$~100~GeV. The measurement of the cross-section at such large values of $p_T$ will provide a very important test of the fragmentation mechanism.

New LEP constraints on some supersymmetric Yukawa interactions that violate R-parity

We consider one-loop corrections to partial widths of the $Z$ induced by supersymmetric Yukawa interactions that violate $R$-parity. The precise experimental values of the leptonic $Z$ partial widths bound these Yukawa couplings, with the most interesting constraints being those on couplings involving the $τ$, since previous constraints on them were very mild.

Non-perturbative unification in the light of LEP results

We consider an alternative to conventional GUTs originally proposed by Maiani, Parisi and Petronzio, where owing to the existence of extra fermion generations at some intermediate scale, the gauge couplings become large at high energies. We first comment on how the non- supersymmetric version of this scenario is ruled out; we then consider the two-loop evolution of the couplings in the supersymmetric extension of this scenario, and check whether such a scenario is feasible in the light of the precies values of couplings now available from LEP.

Looking for the gluonic EMC effect in associated $J/ψ$ + $γ$ production

We study the associated production of $ J/ψ + γ$ in fixed-target experiments with nuclear targets as well as at the relativistic heavy-ion collider (RHIC). We find that this process affords a very clean probe of $ρ_g$, the ratio of gluon density in a heavy nucleus to that of a proton. The combined $x$ range thus available can be used to discriminate between the predictions of different models of the EMC effect for $ρ_g$.
