Measurement of the helicity dependence for single π0π^{0} photoproduction from the deuteron

The helicity-dependent single π0π^{0} photoproduction cross section on the deuteron and the angular dependence of the double polarisation observable EE for the quasi-free single π0π^0 production off the proton and the neutron have been measured for the first time from the threshold region up to the photon energy 1.4 GeV. The experiment was performed at the tagged photon facility of the MAMI accelerator and used a circularly polarised photon beam and longitudinally polarised deuteron target. The reaction products were detected using the large acceptance Crystal Ball/TAPS calorimeter, which covered 97% of the full solid angle. Comparing the cross section from the deuteron with the sum of free nucleon cross sections provides a quantitative estimate of the effects of the nuclear medium on pion production. In contrast, comparison of EE helicity asymmetry data from quasi-free protons off deuterium with data from a free proton target indicates that nuclear effects do not significantly affect this observable. As a consequence, it is deduced that the helicity asymmetry EE on a free neutron can be reliably extracted from measurements on a deuteron in quasi-free kinematics.

Observation of a structure in the Mpη_{pη} invariant mass distribution near 1700 MeV/c2c^2 in the γp→pπ0η\mathbf{γp \rightarrow p π^0 η} reaction

The reaction γp→pπ0ηγp \rightarrow p π^0 η has been studied with the CBELSA/TAPS detector at the electron stretcher accelerator ELSA in Bonn for incident photon energies from threshold up to 3.1 GeV. This paper has been motivated by the recently claimed observation of a narrow structure in the MNη_{Nη} invariant mass distribution at a mass of 1678 MeV/c2c^2. The existence of this structure cannot be confirmed in the present work. Instead, for Eγ_γ = 1400 - 1500 MeV and the cut Mpπ0≤1190_{pπ^0} \le 1190 MeV/c2c^2 a statistically significant structure in the Mpη_{pη} invariant mass distribution near 1700 MeV/c2c^2 is observed with a width of Γ≈35Γ\approx 35 MeV/c2c^2 while the mass resolution is σresσ_{res} = 5 MeV/c2c^2. Increasing the incident photon energy from 1420 to 1540 MeV this structure shifts in mass from ≈\approx 1700MeV/c2^2 to ≈\approx 1725 MeV/c2c^2; the width increases to about 50 MeV/c2c^2 and decreases thereafter. The cross section associated with this structure reaches a maximum of ≈\approx 100 nb around Eγ≈_γ \approx 1490 MeV (W ≈\approx 1920 MeV), which coincides with the pa0p a_0 threshold. Three scenarios are discussed which might be the origin of this structure in the Mpη_{pη} invariant mass distribution. The most likely interpretation is that it is due to a triangular singularity in the γp→pa0→pπ0ηγp \rightarrow p a_0 \rightarrow p π^0 η reaction

Helicity-dependent cross sections for the photoproduction of π0π^0 pairs from nucleons

The double-polarization observable EE and helicity-dependent cross sections σ1/2σ_{1/2}, σ3/2σ_{3/2} have been measured for the photoproduction of π0π^0 pairs off quasi-free protons and neutrons at the Mainz MAMI accelerator with the Crystal Ball/TAPS setup. A circularly polarized photon beam was produced by bremsstrahlung from longitudinally polarized electrons and impinged on a longitudinally polarized deuterated butanol target. The reaction products were detected with an almost 4π4π covering calorimeter. The results reveal for the first time the helicity- and isospin-dependent structure of the γN→Nπ0π0γN\rightarrow Nπ^0π^0 reaction. They are compared to predictions from reaction models in view of nucleon resonance contributions and also to a refit of one model that predicted results for the proton and for the neutron target. The comparison of the prediction and the refit demonstrate the large impact of the new data.

Measurement of the beam-helicity asymmetry in photoproduction of π0ηπ^{0}η pairs on carbon, aluminum, and lead

The beam-helicity asymmetry was measured, for the first time, in photoproduction of π0ηπ^{0}η pairs on carbon, aluminum, and lead, with the A2 experimental setup at MAMI. The results are compared to an earlier measurement on a free proton and to the corresponding theoretical calculations. The Mainz model is used to predict the beam-helicity asymmetry for the nuclear targets. The present results indicate that the photoproduction mechanism for π0ηπ^{0}η pairs on nuclei is similar to photoproduction on a free nucleon. This process is dominated by the D33D_{33} partial wave with the ηΔ(1232)ηΔ(1232) intermediate state.

Signatures of the d∗(2380)d^*(2380) hexaquark in d(γγ,pn⃗p\vec{n})

We report a measurement of the spin polarisation of the recoiling neutron in deuterium photodisintegration, utilising a new large acceptance polarimeter within the Crystal Ball at MAMI. The measured photon energy range of 300~--~700~MeV provides the first measurement of recoil neutron polarisation at photon energies where the quark substructure of the deuteron plays a role, thereby providing important new constraints on photodisintegration mechanisms. A very high neutron polarisation in a narrow structure centred around Eγ∼E_γ\sim~570~MeV is observed, which is inconsistent with current theoretical predictions employing nucleon resonance degrees of freedom. A Legendre polynomial decomposition suggests this behaviour could be related to the excitation of the d∗(2380)d^*(2380) hexaquark.

Experimental study of the γp→K0Σ+γp\rightarrow K^0Σ^+, γn→K0Λγn\rightarrow K^0Λ, and γn→K0Σ0γn\rightarrow K^0 Σ^0 reactions at the Mainz Microtron

This work measured dσ/dΩdσ/dΩ for neutral kaon photoproduction reactions from threshold up to a c.m.\ energy of 1855MeV, focussing specifically on the γp→K0Σ+γp\rightarrow K^0Σ^+, γn→K0Λγn\rightarrow K^0Λ, and γn→K0Σ0γn\rightarrow K^0 Σ^0 reactions. Our results for γn→K0Σ0γn\rightarrow K^0 Σ^0 are the first-ever measurements for that reaction. These data will provide insight into the properties of N∗N^* resonances and, in particular, will lead to an improved knowledge about those states that couple only weakly to the πNπN channel. Integrated cross sections were extracted by fitting the differential cross sections for each reaction as a series of Legendre polynomials and our results are compared with prior experimental results and theoretical predictions.

Determination of the real part of the η'-Nb optical potential

The excitation function and momentum distribution of η' mesons have been measured in photoproduction off 93^Nb in the energy range of 1.2-2.9 GeV. The experiment has been performed with the combined Crystal Barrel and MiniTAPS detector system, using tagged photon beams from the ELSA electron accelerator. Information on the sign and magnitude of the real part of the η'-Nb potential has been extracted from a comparison of the data with model calculations. An attractive potential of -(41 \pm 10(stat) \pm 15(syst)) MeV depth at normal nuclear matter density is deduced within model uncertainties. This value is consistent with the potential depth of -(37 \pm 10(stat) \pm 10(syst)) MeV obtained in an earlier measurement for a light nucleus (carbon). This relatively shallow η'-nucleus potential will make the search for η'-nucleus bound states more difficult.

Momentum dependence of the imaginary part of the ωω- and η′η^\prime-nucleus optical potential

The photoproduction of ωω and η′η^\prime mesons off carbon and niobium nuclei has been measured as a function of the meson momentum for incident photon energies of 1.2-2.9 GeV at the electron accelerator ELSA. The mesons have been identified via the ω→π0γ→3γω\rightarrow π^0 γ\rightarrow 3 γ and η′→π0π0η→6γη^\prime\rightarrow π^0 π^0η\rightarrow 6 γ decays, respectively, registered with the CBELSA/TAPS detector system. From the measured meson momentum distributions the momentum dependence of the transparency ratio has been determined for both mesons. Within a Glauber analysis the in-medium ωω and η′η^\prime widths and the corresponding absorption cross sections have been deduced as a function of the meson momentum. The results are compared to recent theoretical predictions for the in-medium ωω width and η′η^\prime-N absorption cross sections. The energy dependence of the imaginary part of the ωω- and η′η^\prime-nucleus optical potential has been extracted. The finer binning of the present data compared to the existing data allows a more reliable extrapolation towards the production threshold. The modulus of the imaginary part of the η′η^\prime nucleus potential is found to be about three times smaller than recently determined values of the real part of the η′η^\prime-nucleus potential, which makes the η′η^\prime meson a suitable candidate for the search for meson-nucleus bound states. For the ωω meson, the modulus of the imaginary part near threshold is comparable to the modulus of the real part of the potential. As a consequence, only broad structures can be expected which makes the observation of ωω mesic states very difficult experimentally.

Photon asymmetry measurements of γ→p→π0p\overrightarrowγ \mathrm{p} \rightarrow π^{0} \mathrm{p} for Eγ_γ=320−-650 MeV

High statistics measurements of the photon asymmetry Σ\mathrmΣ for the γ→\overrightarrowγp→π0\rightarrowπ^{0}p reaction have been made in the center of mass energy range W=1214-1450 MeV. The data were measured with the MAMI A2 real photon beam and Crystal Ball/TAPS detector systems in Mainz, Germany. The results significantly improve the existing world data and are shown to be in good agreement with previous measurements, and with the MAID, SAID, and Bonn-Gatchina predictions. We have also combined the photon asymmetry results with recent cross-section measurements from Mainz to calculate the profile functions, Σˇ\check{\mathrmΣ} (= σ0Σσ_{0}\mathrmΣ), and perform a moment analysis. Comparison with calculations from the Bonn-Gatchina model shows that the precision of the data is good enough to further constrain the higher partial waves, and there is an indication of interference between the very small FF-waves and the N(1520)3/2−N(1520) 3/2^{-} and N(1535)1/2−N(1535) 1/2^{-} resonances.

Measurement of pi^0 photoproduction on the proton at MAMI C

Differential cross sections for the gamma p -> pi^0 p reaction have been measured with the A2 tagged-photon facilities at the Mainz Microtron, MAMI C, up to the center-of-mass energy W=1.9 GeV. The new results, obtained with a fine energy and angular binning, increase the existing quantity of pi^0 photoproduction data by ~47%. Owing to the unprecedented statistical accuracy and the full angular coverage, the results are sensitive to high partial-wave amplitudes. This is demonstrated by the decomposition of the differential cross sections in terms of Legendre polynomials and by further comparison to model predictions. A new solution of the SAID partial-wave analysis obtained after adding the new data into the fit is presented.
