The LOFAR search for radio pulsars and fast transients in M33, M81 & M82

The radio pulsar and rotating radio transient populations are only known in and near the Milky Way. Investigating such populations in other galaxies requires deep pulsar and transient searches. We performed 4-h radio observations of nearby galaxies M33, M81 and M82 with LOFAR. Our main purpose was to characterise the bright end of the pulsar population in other galaxies, and compare it to that of the Milky Way. We searched for extragalactic radio pulsars through a periodic-pulse search, and for sporadic fast radio transients through a single-pulse search. We coherently combined at most 23 LOFAR Core High-Band Antenna (HBA) stations and covered M33, M81, and M82 in their entirety using multiple tied-array beams. No pulsating sources or single pulses were found. We have, therefore established stricter limits on the extragalactic pulsar flux density at lower frequencies than those obtained in previous Arecibo, GBT, and WSRT searches. We conclude that in nearby galaxies M33, M81, and M82 there are no pulsars shining toward Earth with pseudo luminosities greater than a few times that of the brightest pulsars in our Milky Way.

Bose-Einstein Correlations in a Fluid Dynamical Scenario for Proton-Proton Scattering at 7 TeV

Using a fluid dynamical scenario for $pp$ scattering at 7 TeV, we compute correlation functions for $π^+π^+$ pairs. Femtoscopic radii are extracted based on three-dimensional parametrizations of the correlation functions. We study the radii as a function of the transverse momenta of the pairs, for different multiplicity classes, corresponding to recent experimental results from ALICE. We find the same decrease of the radii with $k_T$, more and more pronounced with increasing multiplicity, but absent for the lowest multiplicities. In the model we understand this as transition from string expansion (low multiplicity) towards a three-dimensional hydrodynamical expansion (high multiplicity).

Ridges and Soft Jet Components in Untriggered Di-hadron Correlations in Pb+Pb Collisions at 2.76 TeV

We study untriggered di-hadron correlations in Pb+Pb at 2.76 TeV, based on an event-by-event simulation of a hydrodynamic expansion starting from flux tube initial conditions. The correlation function shows interesting structures as a function of the pseudorapidity difference $Δη$ and the azimuthal angle difference $Δϕ$, in particular comparing different centralities. We can clearly identify a peak-like nearside structure associated with very low momentum components of jets for peripheral collisions, which disappears towards central collisions. On the other hand, a very broad ridge structure from asymmetric flow seen at central collisions, gets smaller and finally disappears towards peripheral collisions.

Event-by-Event Simulation of the Three-Dimensional Hydrodynamic Evolution from Flux Tube Initial Conditions in Ultrarelativistic Heavy Ion Collisions

We present a realistic treatment of the hydrodynamic evolution of ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions, based on the following features: initial conditions obtained from a flux tube approach, compatible with the string model and the color glass condensate picture; event-by-event procedure, taking into the account the highly irregular space structure of single events, being experimentally visible via so-called ridge structures in two-particle correlations; use of an efficient code for solving the hydrodynamic equations in 3+1 dimensions, including the conservation of baryon number, strangeness, and electric charge; employment of a realistic equation-of-state, compatible with lattice gauge results; use of a complete hadron resonance table, making our calculations compatible with the results from statistical models; hadronic cascade procedure after an hadronization from the thermal matter at an early time.

Evidence for Hydrodynamic Evolution in Proton-Proton Scattering at LHC Energies

In $pp$ scattering at LHC energies, large numbers of elementary scatterings will contribute significantly, and the corresponding high multiplicity events will be of particular interest. Elementary scatterings are parton ladders, identified with color flux-tubes. In high multiplicity events, many of these flux tubes are produced in the same space region, creating high energy densities. We argue that there are good reasons to employ the successful procedure used for heavy ion collisions: matter is assumed to thermalizes quickly, such that the energy from the flux-tubes can be taken as initial condition for a hydrodynamic expansion. This scenario gets spectacular support from very recent results on Bose-Einstein correlations in $pp$ scattering at 900 GeV at LHC.

Near-threshold Photoproduction of Phi Mesons from Deuterium

We report the first measurement of the differential cross section on $ϕ$-meson photoproduction from deuterium near the production threshold for a proton using the CLAS detector and a tagged-photon beam in Hall B at Jefferson Lab. The measurement was carried out by a triple coincidence detection of a proton, $K^+$ and $K^-$ near the theoretical production threshold of 1.57 GeV. The extracted differential cross sections $\frac{dσ}{dt}$ for the initial photon energy from 1.65-1.75 GeV are consistent with predictions based on a quasifree mechanism. This experiment establishes a baseline for a future experimental search for an exotic $ϕ$-N bound state from heavier nuclear targets utilizing subthreshold/near-threshold production of $ϕ$ mesons.

Tensor Correlations Measured in 3He(e,e'pp)n

We have measured the 3He(e,e'pp)n reaction at an incident energy of 4.7 GeV over a wide kinematic range. We identified spectator correlated pp and pn nucleon pairs using kinematic cuts and measured their relative and total momentum distributions. This is the first measurement of the ratio of pp to pn pairs as a function of pair total momentum, $p_{tot}$. For pair relative momenta between 0.3 and 0.5 GeV/c, the ratio is very small at low $p_{tot}$ and rises to approximately 0.5 at large $p_{tot}$. This shows the dominance of tensor over central correlations at this relative momentum.
