A lattice investigation of exotic tetraquark channels

We perform an $n_f=2+1$ lattice study of a number of channels where past claims exist in the literature for the existence of strong-interaction-stable light-heavy tetraquarks. We find no evidence for any such deeply-bound states, beyond the $J^P=1^+$, $I=0$ $ud\bar{b}\bar{b}$ and $I=1/2$ $ls\bar{b}\bar{b}$ states already identified in earlier lattice studies. We also describe a number of systematic improvements to our previous lattice studies, including working with larger $m_πL$ to better suppress possible finite volume effects, employing extended sinks to better control excited-state contamination, and expanding the number of operators used in the GEVP analyses. Our results also allow us to rule out several phenomenological models which predict significant tetraquark binding in channels where no such binding is found.

Lattice calculation of the leading strange quark-connected contribution to the muon $g-2$

We present results for the leading hadronic contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment due to strange quark-connected vacuum polarisation effects. Simulations were performed using RBC--UKQCD's $N_f=2+1$ domain wall fermion ensembles with physical light sea quark masses at two lattice spacings. We consider a large number of analysis scenarios in order to obtain solid estimates for residual systematic effects. Our final result in the continuum limit is $a_μ^{(2)\,{\rm had},\,s}=53.1(9)\left(^{+1}_{-3}\right)\times10^{-10}$.

A resolution of the inclusive flavor-breaking sum rule $τ$ $V_{us}$ puzzle

A combination of continuum and lattice methods is used to investigate systematic issues in the finite-energy-sum-rule determination of $V_{us}$ based on flavor-breaking combinations of hadronic $τ$ decay data. Results for $V_{us}$ obtained using assumptions for $D>4$ OPE contributions employed in previous conventional implementations of this approach are shown to display significant unphysical dependences on the choice of sum rule weight, $w$, and upper limit, $s_0$, of the relevant experimental spectral integrals. Continuum and lattice results suggest the necessity of a new implementation of the flavor-breaking sum rule approach, in which not only $\vert V_{us}\vert$, but also $D>4$ effective condensates are fit to data. Lattice results also provide a means of quantifying the truncation error for the slowly converging $D=2$ OPE series. The new implementation is shown to produce $\vert V_{us}\vert$ results free of unphysical $s_0$- and $w$-dependences and typically $\sim 0.0020$ higher than the (unstable) results found using the conventional implementation. With preliminary new experimental results for the $Kπ$ branching fraction, the resulting $\vert V_{us}\vert$ is in excellent agreement with that obtained from $K_{\ell 3}$, and compatible within errors with expectations from three-family unitarity.

A resolution of the puzzle of low V_us values from inclusive flavor-breaking sum rule analyses of hadronic tau decay

Continuum and lattice methods are used to investigate systematic issues in the sum rule determination of $V_{us}$ using inclusive hadronic $τ$ decay data. Results for $V_{us}$ employing assumptions for $D>4$ OPE contributions used in previous conventional implementations of this approach are shown to display unphysical dependence on the sum rule weight, $w$, and choice of upper limit, $s_0$, of the relevant experimental spectral integrals. Continuum and lattice results suggest a new implementation of the sum rule approach with not just $\vert V_{us}\vert$, but also $D>4$ effective condensates, fit to data. Lattice results are also shown to provide a quantitative assessment of truncation uncertainties for the slowly converging $D=2$ OPE series. The new sum rule implementation yields $\vert V_{us}\vert$ results free of unphysical $s_0$- and $w$-dependences and $\sim 0.0020$ higher than that obtained using the conventional implementation. With preliminary new experimental results for the $Kπ$ branching fraction, the resulting $\vert V_{us}\vert$ is in excellent agreement with that based on $K_{\ell 3}$, and compatible within errors with expectations from three-family unitarity.

Calculation of the hadronic vacuum polarization disconnected contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment

We report the first lattice QCD calculation of the hadronic vacuum polarization disconnected contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment at physical pion mass. The calculation uses a refined noise-reduction technique which enabled the control of statistical uncertainties at the desired level with modest computational effort. Measurements were performed on the $48^3 \times 96$ physical-pion-mass lattice generated by the RBC and UKQCD collaborations. We find $a_μ^{\rm HVP~(LO)~DISC} = -9.6(3.3)(2.3)\times 10^{-10}$, where the first error is statistical and the second systematic.

A Combined NNLO Lattice-Continuum Determination of $L_{10}^r$

The renormalized next-to-leading-order (NLO) chiral low-energy constant, $L_{10}^r$, is determined in a complete next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNLO) analysis, using a combination of lattice and continuum data for the flavor $ud$ $V-A$ correlator and results from a recent chiral sum-rule analysis of the flavor-breaking combination of $ud$ and $us$ $V-A$ correlator differences. The analysis also fixes two combinations of NNLO low-energy constants, the determination of which is crucial to the precision achieved for $L_{10}^r$. Using the results of the flavor-breaking chiral $V-A$ sum rule obtained with current versions of the strange hadronic $τ$ branching fractions as input, we find $L_{10}^r(m_ρ)\, =\, -0.00346(32)$. This result represents the first NNLO determination of $L_{10}^r$ having all inputs under full theoretical and/or experimental control, and the best current precision for this quantity.

NNLO low-energy constants from flavor-breaking chiral sum rules based on hadronic tau-decay data

Using spectral data from non-strange and strange hadronic tau decays, flavor-breaking chiral sum rules involving the flavor ud and us current-current two-point functions are constructed and used to determine the SU(3) NNLO low-energy constant combinations C_{61}^r, C_{12}^r+C_{61}^r+C_{80}^r and C_{12}^r-C_{61}^r+C_{80}^r. The first of these determinations updates the results of an earlier analysis by Durr and Kambor, while the latter two are new. The error on the C_{12}^r+C_{61}^r+C_{80}^r is particularly small. Comparisons are made to model estimates for these quantities. The role of the third combination in significantly improving the determination of the NLO low-energy constant L_{10}^r from NNLO analyses of the flavor ud V-A correlator is also highlighted.

$L_{10}^r$ From a Combined NNLO Lattice, Continuum Analysis of the Light Quark V-A Correlator

A combination of lattice and continuum data for the light-quark V-A correlator, supplemented by results from a chiral sum-rule analysis of the flavor-breaking flavor $ud$-$us$ V-A correlator difference, is shown to make possible a high-precision NNLO determination of the renormalized NLO chiral low-energy constant $L_{10}^r$. Key to this determination is the ability to simultaneously fix the two combinations of NNLO low-energy constants also entering the analysis. With current versions of the strange hadronic $τ$ branching fractions required as input to the flavor-breaking V-A sum rule, we find $L_{10}^r(m_ρ) = -0.00346(29)$. This represents both the best current precision for $L_{10}^r$, and the first NNLO determination having all errors under full control.

Lattice Input on the Inclusive $τ$ Decay $V_{us}$ Puzzle

Recent analyses of flavor-breaking hadronic-$τ$-decay-based sum rules produce values of $\vert V_{us}\vert$ $\sim 3σ$ low compared to 3-family unitarity expectations. An unresolved systematic issue is the significant variation in $\vert V_{us}\vert$ produced by different prescriptions for treating the slowly converging $D=2$ OPE series. We investigate the reliability of these prescriptions using lattice data for various flavor-breaking correlators and show the fixed-scale prescription is clearly preferred. Preliminary updates of the conventional $τ$-based, and related mixed $τ$-electroproduction-data-based, sum rule analyses incorporating B-factory results for low-multiplicity strange $τ$ decay mode distributions are then performed. Use of the preferred FOPT $D=2$ OPE prescription is shown to significantly reduce the discrepancy between 3-family unitarity expectations and the sum rule results.

New results from the lattice on the theoretical inputs to the hadronic tau determination of V_us

Recent sum rule determinations of |V_us|, employing flavor-breaking combinations of hadronic tau decay data, are significantly lower than either expectations based on 3-family unitarity or determinations from K_ell3 and Gamma[K_mu2]/Gamma[pi_mu2]. We use lattice data to investigate the accuracy/reliability of the OPE representation of the flavor-breaking correlator combination entering the tau decay analyses. The behavior of an alternate correlator combination, constructed to reduce problems associated with the slow convergence of the D = 2 OPE series, and entering an alternate sum rule requiring both electroproduction cross-section and hadronic tau decay data, is also investigated. Preliminary updates of both analyses, with the lessons learned from the lattice data in mind, are also presented.

Some continuum physics results from the lattice V-A correlator

We present preliminary results on extractions of the chiral LECs L_10 and C_87 and constraints on the excited pseudoscalar state pi(1300) and pi(1800) decay constants obtained from an analysis of lattice data for the flavor ud light quark V-A correlator. A comparison of the results for the correlator to the corresponding mildly-model-dependent continuum results (based primarily on experimental hadronic tau decay data) is also given

alpha_s from tau decays revisited

Being a determination at low energies, the analysis of hadronic tau decay data provides a rather precise determination of the strong coupling alpha_s after evolving the result to M_Z. At such a level of precision, even small non-perturbative effects become relevant for the central value and error. While those effects had been taken into account in the framework of the operator product expansion, contributions going beyond it, so-called duality violations, have previously been neglected. The following investigation fills this gap through a finite-energy sum rule analysis of tau decay spectra from the OPAL experiment, including duality violations and performing a consistent fit of all appearing QCD parameters. The resulting values for alpha_s(M_tau) are 0.307(19) in fixed-order perturbation theory and 0.322(26) in contour-improved perturbation theory, which translates to the n_f=5 values 0.1169(25) and 0.1187(32) at M_Z, respectively.

Issues in determining alpha_s from hadronic tau decay and electroproduction data

We discuss some key issues associated with duality-violating and non-perturbative OPE contributions to the theoretical representations of light quark current-current two-point functions and relevant to precision determinations of alpha_s from hadronic tau decay and electroproduction cross-section data. We demonstrate that analyses with an explicit representation of duality-violating effects are required to bring theoretical errors in such extractions under control, motivating the accompanying paper in these proceedings, which presents the results of such an analysis.

Consequences of the BaBar e^+e^- --> pi^+pi^- Measurement for the Determination of Model-Dependent rho-omega Mixing Effects in Pi_{ρω}(m_ρ^2) and (g-2)_mu

We update our analysis of rho-omega mixing effects in the pion form factor to incorporate the recently published BaBar e^+e^- --> pi^+π^- cross-sections. The implications for tau-decay-based Standard Model estimates of the leading order hadronic contribution [a_μ]_{had}^{LO}, to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, and for the extraction of the off-diagonal vector meson self-energy matrix element, Pi_{ρω}(m_ρ^2), are discussed.

Duality violations in tau hadronic spectral moments

Evidence is presented for the necessity of including duality violations in a consistent description of spectral function moments employed in the precision determination of $α_s$ from $τ$ decay. A physically motivated ansatz for duality violations in the spectral functions enables us to perform fits to spectral moments employing both pinched and unpinched weights. We describe our analysis strategy and provide some preliminary findings. Final numerical results await completion of an ongoing re-determination of the ALEPH covariance matrices incorporating correlations due to the unfolding procedure which are absent from the currently posted versions. To what extent this issue affects existing analyses and our own work will require further study.

Flavor Physics in the Quark Sector

One of the major challenges of particle physics has been to gain an in-depth understanding of the role of quark flavor and measurements and theoretical interpretations of their results have advanced tremendously: apart from masses and quantum numbers of flavor particles, there now exist detailed measurements of the characteristics of their interactions allowing stringent tests of Standard Model predictions. Among the most interesting phenomena of flavor physics is the violation of the CP symmetry that has been subtle and difficult to explore. Till early 1990s observations of CP violation were confined to neutral $K$ mesons, but since then a large number of CP-violating processes have been studied in detail in neutral $B$ mesons. In parallel, measurements of the couplings of the heavy quarks and the dynamics for their decays in large samples of $K, D$, and $B$ mesons have been greatly improved in accuracy and the results are being used as probes in the search for deviations from the Standard Model. In the near future, there will be a transition from the current to a new generation of experiments, thus a review of the status of quark flavor physics is timely. This report summarizes the results of the current generation of experiments that is about to be completed and it confronts these results with the theoretical understanding of the field.

Models of Isospin Breaking in the Pion Form Factor: Consequences for the Determination of Pi_{ρω}(m_rho^2) and (g-2)_mu/2

We study the implications of several recent high-precision measurements of the pion form factor in the region of the rho-omega interference "shoulder" for (i) the extraction of the rho-omega mixing matrix element, Pi_{ρω}(m_rho^2), and (ii) the evaluation of the isospin-breaking (IB) correction needed to incorporate hadronic tau decay data into the determination of the Standard Model expectation for the leading order hadronic contribution, [a_mu]_{had}^{LO}, to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, focussing, in the latter case, on the model-dependence of the rho-omega mixing component of the IB correction. We consider a range of different models for the broad rho contribution to the e^+e^- --> ππamplitude, applying these models to each experimental data set, and find that the model dependence of the rho-omega mixing correction is significantly larger than the uncertainty induced by experimental errors for any individual model. We also find that, for each such model, the recent data allows one to separate rho-omega mixing and direct omega --> ππcoupling contributions to the amplitude, and hence to obtain a reasonably precise extraction of Pi_{ρω}(m_rho^2), uncontaminated by direct omega --> ππcoupling effects, for use in meson exchange model calculations of charge symmetry breaking in NN scattering.

QCD Lambda parameter from Landau-gauge gluon and ghost correlations

We utilise a recently developed minimal MOM scheme to determine the QCD Lambda parameter from the gluon and ghost propagators in lattice Landau gauge. We discuss uncertainties in the analysis and report our preliminary zero and two flavour results, which are r_0*LambdaMS^{(0)}=0.62(1) and r_0*LambdaMS^{(2)}=0.60(3)(2), with the second error due to an extrapolation uncertainty.

Running alpha(s) from Landau-gauge gluon and ghost correlations

We estimate the running coupling constant of the strong interactions within the nonperturbative framework of lattice QCD in Landau gauge. Our calculation is based on the ghost-gluon vertex which in the particular case of Landau gauge allows for a definition of alpha(s) in a MOM scheme solely in terms of the gluon and ghost dressing functions. As a first step we investigate the zero and two-flavour case and report here on preliminary results.

The Strong Isospin-Breaking Correction for the Gluonic Penguin Contribution to epsilon'/epsilon at Next-to-Leading Order in the Chiral Expansion

The strong isospin-breaking correction, Omega_{st}, which appears in estimates of the Standard Model value for the direct CP-violating ratio epsilon'/epsilon, is evaluated to next-to-leading order (NLO) in the chiral expansion using Chiral Perturbation Theory. The relevant linear combinations of the unknown NLO CP-odd weak low-energy constants (LEC's) which, in combination with 1-loop and strong LEC contributions, are required for a complete determination at this order, are estimated using two different models. It is found that, to NLO, Omega_{st}=0.08 +/- 0.05, significantly reduced from the ``standard'' value, 0.25 +/- 0.08, employed in recent analyses. The potentially significant numerical impact of this decrease on Standard Model predictions for epsilon'/epsilon, associated with the decreased cancellation between gluonic penguin and electroweak penguin contributions, is also discussed.

Constraints on Hadronic Spectral Functions From Continuous Families of Finite Energy Sum Rules

Hadronic tau decay data is used to study the reliability of various finite energy sum rules (FESR's). For intermediate scales (of order 2-3 GeV^2), those FESR's with weights s^k are found to have significant errors, whereas those with weights having a zero at the juncture (s=s_0) of the cut and circular part of the contour work very well. It is also shown that a combination of two such sum rules allows rather strong constraints to be placed on the hadronic spectral function without sacrificing the excellent agreement between OPE and hadronic representations. The method then is applied to the strangeness -1 and pseudoscalar isovector channels, where it is shown to provide novel constraints on those ansatze for the unmeasured continuum parts of the spectral functions employed in existing extractions of m_u+m_d, m_s. The continuum ansätz in the latter channel, in particular, is shown to produce a rather poor match to the corresponding OPE representation, hence re-opening the question of the value of the light quark mass combination m_u+m_d.

Systematic Theoretical Search for Dibaryons in a Relativistic Model

A relativistic quark potential model is used to do a systematic search for quasi-stable dibaryon states in the $u$, $d$, and $s$ three flavor world. Flavor symmetry breaking and channel coupling effects are included and an adiabatic method and fractional parentage expansion technique are used in the calculations. The relativistic model predicts dibaryon candidates completely consistent with the nonrelativistic model.

Some New Results on the H Dibaryon in the Quark Cluster Model

The H dibaryon channel, (I=0,J=0,S=-2), is revisited in the non-relativistic quark cluster model (NRQCM) using a basis extended beyond the usual set of baryon cluster pairs to include an explicit spatially symmetric 6q state, analogous in structure to the MIT bag model H. We find that the binding predicted using the two-baryon basis alone is significantly deepened by the addition of the additional 6q configuration. The NRQCM thus appears, contrary to earlier findings, to be incompatible with the experimental information available for this channel.
