Gluon Radiation from a classical point particle II: dense gluon fields

The goal of this paper is to extend the results of Ref. [1], where formulae were derived for gluonic radiation for a high energy nucleus colliding with a classical colored particle. In Ref. [1], we computed the amplitudes for radiation in the fragmentation region of the particle for a dilute gluonic field. In this paper, we compute the radiation by solving the fluctuation equations of the dense background field in a specific gauge which makes it simple to solve the asymptotic radiation from an initial condition immediately after the passage of the nucleus. We identify and compute two components of gluon radiation, a bulk component which extends to the central region and bremsstrahlung, which may give rise to an experimentally observable intensity peak in the target fragmentation region.

Quantum and stringy corrections to the equation of state of holographic QCD matter and the nature of the chiral transition

We consider the finite temperature phase diagram of holographic QCD in the Veneziano limit (Nc large, Nf large with xf=Nf/Nc fixed) and calculate one string-loop corrections to the free energy in certain approximations. Such corrections, especially due to the pion modes are unsuppressed in the Veneziano limit. We find that under some extra assumptions the first order transition following from classical gravity solutions can become second order. If stringy asymptotics are of a special form and there are residual interactions it may even become of third order. Operationally these computations imply modelling the low temperature chiral symmetry breaking phase with a hadron gas containing Nf^2 massless Goldstone bosons and an exponential spectrum of massive hadrons. A third order transition is possible only if repulsive hadron interactions via the excluded volume effect are included.

Energy momentum tensor correlators in hot Yang-Mills theory: holography confronts lattice and perturbation theory

We investigate the behavior of energy momentum tensor correlators in strongly coupled large-N_c Yang-Mills theory at nonzero temperature, working within the Improved Holographic QCD model. In particular, we determine the spectral functions and corresponding imaginary time correlators in the bulk and shear channels, and compare the results to recent perturbative and lattice calculations where available. For the bulk channel imaginary time correlator, for which all three results exist, lattice data is seen to favor the holographic prediction over the perturbative one over a wide range of temperatures.

On finite-temperature holographic QCD in the Veneziano limit

Holographic models in the T=0 universality class of QCD in the limit of large number N_c of colors and N_f massless fermion flavors, but constant ratio x_f=N_f/N_c, are analyzed at finite temperature. The models contain a 5-dimensional metric and two scalars, a dilaton sourcing TrF^2 and a tachyon dual to \bar qq. The phase structure on the T,x_f plane is computed and various 1st order, 2nd order transitions and crossovers with their chiral symmetry properties are identified. For each x_f, the temperature dependence of p/T^4 and the quark-antiquark -condensate is computed. In the simplest case, we find that for x_f up to the critical x_c\sim 4 there is a 1st order transition on which chiral symmetry is broken and the energy density jumps. In the conformal window x_c<x_f<11/2, there is only a continuous crossover between two conformal phases. When approaching x_c from below, x_f\to x_c, temperature scales approach zero as specified by Miransky scaling.

Frequency and wave number dependence of the shear correlator in strongly coupled hot Yang-Mills theory

We use AdS/QCD duality to compute the finite temperature Green's function G(omega,k;T) of the shear operator T_12 for all omega,k in hot Yang-Mills theory. The goal is to assess how the existence of scales like the transition temperature and glueball masses affects the correlator computed in the scalefree conformal N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. We observe sizeable effects for T close to T_c which rapidly disappear with increasing T. Quantitative agreement of these predictions with future lattice Monte Carlo data would suggest that QCD matter in this temperature range is strongly interacting.

Mass spectrum and thermodynamics of quasi-conformal gauge theories from gauge/gravity duality

We use gauge/gravity duality to study simultaneously the mass spectrum and the thermodynamics of a generic quasi-conformal gauge theory, specified by its beta function. The beta function of a quasi-conformal theory almost vanishes, and the coupling is almost constant between two widely separated energy scales. Depending on whether the gravity dual has a black hole or not, the mass spectrum is either a spectrum of quasinormal oscillations or a normal T=0 mass spectrum. The mass spectrum is quantitatively correlated with the thermal properties of the system. As the theory approaches conformality, the masses have to vanish. We show that in this limit, the masses calculated via gauge/gravity duality satisfy expected scaling properties.

Spatial scalar correlator in strongly coupled hot N=4 Yang-Mills theory

We use AdS/CFT duality to compute in N=4 Yang-Mills theory the finite temperature spatial correlator G(r) of the scalar operator F^2, integrated over imaginary time. The computation is carried out both at zero frequency and integrating the spectral function over frequencies. The result is compared with a perturbative computation in finite T SU(N_c) Yang-Mills theory.

Thermodynamics of a field theory with infrared fixed point from gauge/gravity duality

We use gauge/gravity duality to study the thermodynamics of a field theory with asymptotic freedom in the ultraviolet and a fixed point in the infrared. We find a high temperature quark-gluon phase and a low T conformal unparticle phase. The phase transition between the phases is of first order or continuous, depending on the ratio of the radii of asymptotic AdS5 spaces at T=0 and T=infinity. This is a prediction from a model of gauge/gravity duality, not yet verified on the field theory side.

Thermodynamics of Quasi Conformal Theories From Gauge/Gravity Duality

We use gauge/gravity duality to study the thermodynamics of a generic almost conformal theory, specified by its beta function. Three different phases are identified, a high temperature phase of massless partons, an intermediate quasi-conformal phase and a low temperature confining phase. The limit of a theory with infrared fixed point, in which the coupling does not run to infinity, is also studied. The transitions between the phases are of first order or continuous, depending on the parameters of the beta function. The results presented follow from gauge/gravity duality; no specific boundary theory is assumed, only its beta function.

Thermodynamics of AdS/QCD

We study finite temperature properties of four dimensional QCD-like gauge theories in the gauge theory/gravity duality picture. The gravity dual contains two deformed 5d AdS metrics, with and without a black hole, and a dilaton. We study the thermodynamics of the 4d boundary theory and constrain the two metrics so that they correspond to a high and a low temperature phase separated by a first order phase transition. The equation of state has the standard form for the pressure of a strongly coupled fluid modified by a vacuum energy, a bag constant. We determine the parameters of the deformation by using QCD results for $T_c$ and the hadron spectrum. With these parameters, we show that the phase transition in the 4d boundary theory and the 5d bulk Hawking-Page transition agree. We probe the dynamics of the two phases by computing the quark-antiquark free energy in them and confirm that the transition corresponds to confinement-deconfinement transition.

Quark-antiquark production from classical fields and chemical equilibration

We compute by numerical integration of the Dirac equation the number of quark-antiquark pairs produced in the classical color fields of colliding ultrarelativistic nuclei. The backreaction of the created pairs on the color fields is not taken into account. While the number of qqbar pairs is parametrically suppressed in the coupling constant, we find that in this classical field model it could even be compatible with the thermal ratio to the number of gluons. After isotropization one could thus have quark-gluon plasma in chemical equilibrium.

Plaquette expectation value and gluon condensate in three dimensions

In three dimensions, the gluon condensate of pure SU(3) gauge theory has ultraviolet divergences up to 4-loop level only. By subtracting the corresponding terms from lattice measurements of the plaquette expectation value and extrapolating to the continuum limit, we extract the finite part of the gluon condensate in lattice regularization. Through a change of regularization scheme to MSbar and (inverse) dimensional reduction, this result would determine the first non-perturbative coefficient in the weak-coupling expansion of hot QCD pressure.

Rapidity dependence of particle production in ultrarelativistic nuclear collisions

We compute the rapidity dependence of particle and transverse energy production in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions at various beam energies and atomic numbers using the perturbative QCD + saturation model. The distribution is a broad gaussian near $y=0$ but the rapid increase of particle production with the beam energy will via energy conservation strongly constrain the rapidity distribution at large $y$.

Critical behaviour of the Ginzburg-Landau model in the type II region

We study the critical behaviour of the three-dimensional U(1) gauge+Higgs theory (Ginzburg-Landau model) at large scalar self-coupling λ(``type II region'') by measuring various correlation lengths as well as the Abrikosov-Nielsen-Olesen vortex tension. We identify different scaling regions as the transition is approached from below, and carry out detailed comparisons with the criticality of the 3d O(2) symmetric scalar theory.

Heavy ion collision multiplicities and gluon distribution functions

Atomic number ($A$) and energy ($\roots$) scaling exponents of multiplicity and transverse energy in heavy ion collisions are analytically derived in the perturbative QCD + saturation model. The exponents depend on the small-$x$ behaviour of gluon distribution functions at an $x$-dependent scale. The relation between initial state and final state saturation is also discussed.

Measuring infrared contributions to the QCD pressure

For the pressure (or free energy) of QCD, four-dimensional (4d) lattice data is available at zero baryon density up to a few times the critical temperature $T_c$. Perturbation theory, on the other hand, has serious convergence problems even at very high temperatures. In a combined analytical and three-dimensional (3d) lattice method, we show that it is possible to compute the QCD pressure from about $2 T_c$ to infinity. The numerical accuracy is good enough to resolve in principle, e.g., logarithmic contributions related to 4-loop perturbation theory.

preprint1999arXiv

Scaling of transverse energies and multiplicities with atomic number and energy in ultrarelativistic nuclear collisions

We compute how the initial energy density and produced gluon, quark and antiquark numbers scale with atomic number and beam energy in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions. The computation is based on the argument that the effect of all momentum scales can be estimated by performing the computation at one transverse momentum scale, the saturation momentum. The initial numbers are converted to final ones by assuming kinetic thermalisation and adiabatic expansion. The main emphasis of the study is at LHC and RHIC energies but it is observed that even at SPS energies this approach leads to results which are not unreasonable: what is usually described as a completely soft nonperturbative process can also be described in terms of gluons and quarks. The key element is the use of the saturation scale.

The Phase Diagram of Three-Dimensional SU(3) + Adjoint Higgs Theory

We study the phase diagram of the three-dimensional SU(3)+adjoint Higgs theory with lattice Monte Carlo simulations. A critical line consisting of a first order line, a tricritical point and a second order line, divides the phase diagram into two parts distinguished by <Tr A0^3>=0 and /=0. The location and the type of the critical line are determined by measuring the condensates <Tr A0^2> and <Tr A0^3>, and the masses of scalar and vector excitations. Although in principle there can be different types of broken phases, corresponding perturbatively to unbroken SU(2)xU(1) or U(1)xU(1) symmetries, we find that dynamically only the broken phase with SU(2)xU(1)-like properties is realized. The relation of the phase diagram to 4d finite temperature QCD is discussed.

Hydrodynamics of nuclear collisions with initial conditions from perturbative QCD

We compute the longitudinal hydrodynamic flow in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5500 GeV by using boost non-invariant initial conditions following from perturbative QCD. The transfer of entropy and energy from the central region to larger rapidities caused by boost non-invariance is determined and the associated decrease in the lifetime of the system is estimated.

preprint1997arXiv

Non-perturbative Debye mass in finite T QCD

Employing a non-perturbative gauge invariant definition of the Debye screening mass m_D in the effective field theory approach to finite T QCD, we use 3d lattice simulations to determine the leading O(g^2) and to estimate the next-to-leading O(g^3) corrections to m_D in the high temperature region. The O(g^2) correction is large and modifies qualitatively the standard power-counting hierarchy picture of correlation lengths in high temperature QCD.

preprint1996arXiv

Baryon-to-entropy ratio in very high energy nuclear collisions

We compute as a function of rapidity $y$ the baryon number carried by quarks and antiquarks with $p_T > p_0 \approx$ 2 GeV produced in Pb+Pb collisions at TeV energies. The computation is carried out in lowest order QCD perturbation theory using structure functions compatible with HERA results. At $p_0=2$ GeV the initial gluon density is both transversally saturated and thermalised in the sense that the energy/gluon equals to that of an ideal gas with the same energy density. Even at these high energies the initial net baryon number density at $y=0$ at $τ=0.1$ fm will be more than the normal nuclear matter density but the baryon-to-entropy ratio is only $(B-\bar B)/S\sim 1/5000$. Further evolution of the system is discussed and the final baryon-to-entropy ratio is estimated.

Is There a Hot Electroweak Phase Transition at $m_H\gsim m_W$?

We provide non-perturbative evidence for the fact that there is no hot electroweak phase transition at large Higgs masses, $m_H = 95$, 120 and 180 GeV. This means that the line of first order phase transitions separating the symmetric and broken phases at small $m_H$ has an end point $m_{H,c}$. In the minimal standard electroweak theory 70 GeV $<m_{H,c}<$ 95 GeV and most likely $m_{H,c} \approx 80$ GeV. If the electroweak theory is weakly coupled and the Higgs boson is found to be heavier than the critical value (which depends on the theory in question), cosmological remnants from the electroweak epoch are improbable.

preprint1994arXiv

3d physics and the electroweak phase transition: a framework for lattice Monte Carlo analysis

We discuss a framework relying on both perturbative and non-perturbative lattice computations which will be able to reliably determine the parameters of the EW phase transition. A motivation for the use of 3d effective theory in the lattice simulations, rather than the complete 4d one, is provided. We introduce and compute on the 2-loop level a number of gauge-invariant order parameters -- condensates, which can be measured with high accuracy in MC simulations. The relation between MSbar and lattice condensates is found, together with the relation between lattice couplings and continuum parameters (the constant physics curves). These relations are exact in the continuum limit.
