Magnetic monopole loops generated from calorons with nontrivial holonomy

We study whether or not magnetic monopoles are generated from calorons defined in the space $\mathbb{R}^3\times S^1$ with the period $β$. We give numerical evidence that one-caloron solution with nontrivial holonomy generates two loops of magnetic monopole and each loop passing through one of the two poles of the caloron winds along the time direction for small $β$, while two loops approach each other to fuse into an unwinding loop for large $β$, suggesting the existence of a critical value of $β$ separating two different phases. This work is a first step to explain quark confinement/deconfinement at finite temperature from the viewpoint of dual superconductor picture in our framework.

Magnetic monopole loops generated from two-instanton solutions: Jackiw-Nohl-Rebbi versus 't Hooft instanton

In our previous paper (Fukui et al., 2010), we have shown that the Jackiw-Nohl-Rebbi two-instanton generates a circular loop of magnetic monopole in the four-dimensional Euclidean SU(2) Yang-Mills theory. On the other hand, it is claimed in Brower, Orginos and Tan (1997) that the 't Hooft two-instanton does not generate magnetic monopole loop. It seems that two results are inconsistent with each other, since the JNR two-instanton converges to the 't Hooft two-instanton in a certain limit. In this paper, we clarify that two results are compatible with each other by demonstrating how the magnetic monopole loop generated from the JNR two-instanton deforms in the process of taking the 't Hooft two-instanton limit.

Non-Abelian Dual Superconductor Picture for Quark Confinement

We give a theoretical framework for defining and extracting non-Abelian magnetic monopoles in a gauge-invariant way in SU(N) Yang-Mills theory to study quark confinement. Then we give numerical evidences that the non-Abelian magnetic monopole defined in this way gives a dominant contribution to confinement of fundamental quarks in SU(3) Yang-Mills theory, which is in sharp contrast to the SU(2) case in which Abelian magnetic monopoles play the dominant role for quark confinement.

Gauge-independent derivation of "Abelian" dominance and magnetic monopole dominance in the string tension

Recently, we have developed a reformulation of the lattice Yang-Mills theory based on the change of variables a la Cho-Faddeev-Niemi combined with a non-Abelian Stokes theorem. In this talk, we give a new procedure (called reduction) for obtaining the color field which plays the central role in this reformulation. In the 4D SU(2) lattice Yang-Mills theory, we confirm the gauge-independent "abelian" dominance and gauge-independent magnetic-monopole dominance in the string tension extracted from the Wilson loop in the fundamental representation.

Quark confinement and gauge invariant monopoles in SU(2) YM

We give a short review of recently obtained results on a new lattice formulation of the non-linear change of variables which was once called the Cho--Faddeev--Niemi decomposition in SU(2) Yang-Mills theory. Based on this formulation, we proposed a new gauge-invariant definition of the magnetic monopole current which guarantees the magnetic charge quantization. We also demonstrated the magnetic monopole dominance in the string tension in SU(2) Yang-Mills theory on a lattice. Our formulation enables one to reproduce in the gauge-invariant way remarkable results obtained so far only in the Maximally Abelian gauge.

Lattice construction of Cho-Faddeev-Niemi decomposition and gauge invariant monopole

We present the first implementation of the Cho--Faddeev--Niemi decomposition of the SU(2) Yang-Mills field on a lattice. Our construction retains the color symmetry (global SU(2) gauge invariance) even after a new type of Maximally Abelian gauge, as explicitly demonstrated by numerical simulations. Moreover, we propose a gauge-invariant definition of the magnetic monopole current using this formulation and compare the new definition with the conventional one by DeGrand and Toussaint to exhibit its validity.

Weak gauge-invariance of dimension two condensate in Yang-Mills theory

We give a formal proof that the space-time average of the vacuum condensate of mass dimension two, i.e., the vacuum expectation value of the squared potential $\mathscr{A}_μ^2$, is gauge invariant in the weak sense that it is independent of the gauge-fixing condition adopted in quantizing the Yang-Mills theory. This is shown at least for the small deformation from the generalized Lorentz and the modified Maximal Abelian gauge in the naive continuum formulation neglecting Gribov copies. This suggests that the numerical value of the condensate could be the same no matter what gauge-fixing conditions for choosing the representative from the gauge orbit are adopted to measure it. Finally, we discuss how this argument should be modified when the Gribov copies exist.

Magnetic condensation, Abelian dominance, and instability of Savvidy vacuum in Yang-Mills theory

We propose a novel type of color magnetic condensation originating from magnetic monopoles so that it provides the mass of off-diagonal gluons in the Yang-Mills theory. This dynamical mass generation enables us to explain the infrared Abelian dominance and monopole dominance by way of a non-Abelian Stokes theorem, which supports the dual superconductivity picture of quark confinement. Moreover, we show that the instability of Savvidy vacuum disappears by sufficiently large color magnetic condensation.

Finite-Temperature and -Density QED: Schwinger-Dyson Equation in the Real-Time Formalism

Based on the real-time formalism, especially, on Thermo Field Dynamics, we derive the Schwinger-Dyson gap equation for the fermion propagator in QED and Four-Fermion model at finite-temperature and -density. We discuss some advantage of the real-time formalism in solving the self-consistent gap equation, in comparison with the ordinary imaginary-time formalism. Once we specify the vertex function, we can write down the SD equation with only continuous variables without performing the discrete sum over Matsubara frequencies which cannot be performed in advance without further approximation in the imaginary-time formalism. By solving the SD equation obtained in this way, we find the chiral-symmetry restoring transition at finite-temperature and present the associated phase diagram of strong coupling QED. In solving the SD equation, we consider two approximations: instantaneous-exchange and $p_0$-independent ones. The former has a direct correspondence in the imaginary time formalism, while the latter is a new approximation beyond the former, since the latter is able to incorporate new thermal effects which has been overlooked in the ordinary imaginary-time solution. However both approximations are shown to give qualitatively the same results on the finite-temperature phase transition.

Gauge Independent Phase Structure of Gauged Nambu-Jona-Lasinio and Yukawa Models

We investigate the critical behavior of the gauged NJL model (QED plus 4-fermion interaction) and the gauged Yukawa model by use of the inversion method. By calculating the gauge-invariant chiral condensate in the inversion method to the lowest order, we derive the critical line which separates the spontaneous chiral-symmetry breaking phase from the chiral symmetric one. The critical exponent for the chiral order parameter associated with the second order chiral phase transition is shown to take the mean-field value together with possible logarithmic correction to the mean-field prediction. All the above results are gauge-parameter independent and are compared with the previous results obtained from the Schwinger-Dyson equation for the fermion propagator.
