On internal mechanical properties of Electroweak Magnetic Monopoles and their effects on stability

By considering properties of the energy-momentum tensor of the electroweak magnetic monopole and its Born-Infeld extension, we attempt to make comments on the stability of these configurations. Specifically, we perform a study of the behaviour of the so-called internal force and pressure of these extended field-theoretic solitonic objects, which are derived from the energy-momentum tensor. Our method is slightly different from the so-called Laue's criterion for stability of nuclear matter, a local form of which had been proposed and applied in the earlier literature to the `t Hooft-Polyakov (HP) magnetic monopole, and found to be violated.By applying our method first to HP monopole, we also observe that, despite its topological stability, the total (finite) internal force (which has only radial components) is directed inwards, towards the centre of the monopole, which would imply instability. Thus this mechanical criterion for stability is arguably violated in the case of the HP monopole, as is the local version of Laue's criterion. The criterion is satisfied for the short-range part of the energy momentum tensor, in which the long-range part, due to the massless photon of the U(1) subgroup, is subtracted. Par contrast, the total internal force of the Cho-Maison (CM) electroweak monopole has both radial and angular components, which diverge at the origin, leading to rotational instabilities. Finally, by studying finite-energy extensions of the CM, either with non-minimal Higgs couplings with the hypercharge sector or hypercharge Born-Infeld type models, we find that the total force, integrated over space, is finite, but it has also angular components in the Born-Infeld case. The latter feature is interpreted as indicating that the Born-Infeld-CM monopole might be subject to rotations upon the action of perturbations, but it does not necessarily imply instabilities of the configuration.

Gauge Field Localization in the Linear Dilaton Background

We study dynamical self-localization of gauge theories in higher dimensions. Specifically, we consider a 5D $U(1)$ gauge theory in the linear dilaton (clockwork) background, with anisotropic gauge couplings along the transverse (fifth) direction and the longitudinal (four-dimensional) directions. By using lattice techniques, we calculate the space plaquettes and the helicity moduli and we determine the phase diagram of the model. We find strong evidence that the model exhibits a new phase, a layer phase, where the four-dimensional physics decouples from the five-dimensional dynamics. The layer phase corresponds to a strong force along the fifth direction and a Coulomb phase along the four-dimensional longitudinal directions. This is in accordance with the clockwork mechanism where light particles with exponentially suppressed interactions are generated in theories with no fundamental small parameters.

Effective potential for Lifshitz type z=3 gauge theories

We consider the one-loop effective potential at zero temperature in field theories with anisotropic space-time scaling, with critical exponent $z=3$, including scalar, fermion and gauge fields. The fermion determinant generates a symmetry breaking term at one loop in the effective potential and a local minimum appears, for non zero scalar field, for every value of the Yukawa coupling. Depending on the relative strength of the coupling constants for the scalar and the gauge field, we find a second symmetry breaking local minimum in the effective potential for a bigger value of the scalar field.

Exploration of the phase diagram of 5D anisotropic SU(2) gauge theory

In this paper we attempt a non-perturbative study of the five dimensional, anisotropic SU(2) gauge theory on the lattice using Monte-Carlo techniques. Our goal is the exploration of the phase diagram, define the various phases and the critical boundary lines. Three phases appear, two of them are continuations of the Strong and the Weak coupling phases of pure 4d SU(2) to non-zero coupling $β^{'}$ in the fifth transverse direction and they are separated by a crossover transition, while the third phase is a 5D Coulombic phase. We provide evidence that the phase transition between the 5D Coulomb phase and the Weak coupling phase is a second order phase transition. Assuming that this result is not altered when increasing the lattice volume we give a first estimate of the associated critical exponents. This opens the possibility for a continuum effective five dimensional field theory.

Symmetry breaking and restoration for interacting scalar and gauge fields in Lifshitz type theories

We consider the one-loop effective potential at zero and finite temperature in field theories with anisotropic space-time scaling, with critical exponent $z=2$, including both scalar and gauge fields. Depending on the relative strength of the coupling constants for the gauge and scalar interactions, we find that there is a symmetry breaking term induced at one-loop at zero temperature and we find symmetry restoration through a first-order phase transition at high temperature.

Symmetry breaking and restoration in Lifshitz type theories

We consider the one-loop effective potential at zero and finite temperature in scalar field theories with anisotropic space-time scaling. For $z=2$, there is a symmetry breaking term induced at one-loop at zero temperature and we find symmetry restoration through a first-order phase transition at high temperature. For $z=3$, we considered at first the case with a positive mass term at tree level and found no symmetry breaking effects induced at one-loop, and then we study the case with a negative mass term at tree level where we cannot conclude about symmetry restoration effects at high temperature because of the imaginary parts that appear in the effective potential for small values of the scalar field.

Liouville-Lifshitz theory in 3+1 dimensions

We consider a four-dimensional theory in the z=3 Lifshitz context, with an exponential (Liouville) potential. We determine the exact renormalized potential of the theory and derive the non-perturbative relation between the renormalized and bare couplings. In addition, we show that Lorentz symmetry is naturally generated by quantum fluctuations in the infrared regime, and conclude that the model can be relevant to High Energy Physics.

Non-Linear Sigma Model and asymptotic freedom at the Lifshitz point

We construct the general O(N)-symmetric non-linear sigma model in 2+1 spacetime dimensions at the Lifshitz point with dynamical critical exponent z=2. For a particular choice of the free parameters, the model is asymptotically free with the beta function coinciding to the one for the conventional sigma model in 1+1 dimensions. In this case, the model admits also a simple description in terms of adjoint currents.

Schwinger-Dyson approach for a Lifshitz-type Yukawa model

We consider a 3+1 dimensional field theory at a Lifshitz point for a dynamical critical exponent z=3, with a scalar and a fermion field coupled via a Yukawa interaction. Using the non-perturbative Schwinger-Dyson approach we calculate quantum corrections to the effective action. We demonstrate that a first order derivative kinetic term as well as a mass term for the fermion arise dynamically. This signals the restoration of Lorentz symmetry in the IR regime of the single fermion model, although for theories with more than one fermionic species such a conclusion will require fine-tuning of couplings. The limitations of the model and our approach are discussed.

Asymmetrically Warped Brane Models, Bulk Photons and Lorentz Invariance

We present a brief review of our recent work [1] on asymmetrically warped brane models, where the background metric is characterized by different time and space warp factors. In particular we examine the case of bulk photons and we show that the standard Lorentz invariant dispersion relation is corrected by nonlinear terms which lead to an Energy-dependent speed of light. Stringent constraints on the parameters of our models can be set by comparing the results with recent data from high-energy Gamma-Ray Astrophysics, for instance the MAGIC Telescope.

Neutrino oscillations in a Robertson-Walker Universe with space time foam

In Phys. Rev. D77 (2008) 105001, we have studied decoherence models for flavour oscillations in four-dimensional stochastically fluctuating space times and discussed briefly the sensitivity of current terrestrial and astrophysical neutrino experiments to such models. In this addendum we extend these results to incorporate the effects due to the expansion of the Universe, so that our analysis can be useful in studies of extragalactic high-energy neutrinos, such as those coming from Gamma Ray Bursts at cosmological distances. Unfortunately for some microscopic models of foam, constructed in the string theory framework, we arrive at pessimistic conclusions about the detectability of the decoherence effects via flavour oscillation meaurements.

Multi--Layer Structure in the Strongly Coupled 5D Abelian Higgs Model

We explore the phase diagram of the five-dimensional anisotropic Abelian Higgs model by Monte Carlo simulations. In particular, we study the transition between the confining phase and the four dimensional layered Higgs phase. We find that, in a certain region of the lattice parameter space, this transition can be first order and that each layer moves into the Higgs phase independently of the others (decoupling of layers). As the Higgs couplings vary, we find, using mean field techniques, that this transition may probably become second order.

Multi-Layer Structure in the Strongly Five Dimensional Abelian Higgs Model

We explore the phase diagram of the 5--D anisotropic Abelian Higgs model by Monte Carlo simulations. In particular, we study the transition between the confining phase and the four dimensional layered Higgs phase. We find that, in a certain region of the lattice parameter space, this transition can be first order and that each layer moves into the Higgs phase independently of the others (decoupling of layers).

Phase Structure of the 5D Abelian Higgs Model with Anisotropic Couplings

We establish the phase diagram of the five-dimensional anisotropic Abelian Higgs model by mean field techniques and Monte Carlo simulations. The anisotropy is encoded in the gauge couplings as well as in the Higgs couplings. In addition to the usual bulk phases (confining, Coulomb and Higgs) we find four-dimensional ``layered'' phases (3-branes) at weak gauge coupling, where the layers may be in either the Coulomb or the Higgs phase, while the transverse directions are confining.

Phase Structure of lattice SU(2)xU_S(1) three-dimensional Gauge Theory

We discuss a phase diagram for a relativistic SU(2) x U_{S}(1) lattice gauge theory, with emphasis on the formation of a parity-invariant chiral condensate, in the case when the $U_{S}(1)$ field is infinitely coupled, and the SU(2) field is moved away from infinite coupling by means of a strong-coupling expansion. We provide analytical arguments on the existence of (and partially derive) a critical line in coupling space, separating the phase of broken SU(2) symmetry from that where the symmetry is unbroken. We review uncoventional (Kosterlitz-Thouless type) superconducting properties of the model, upon coupling it to external electromagnetic potentials. We discuss the rôle of instantons of the unbroken subgroup U(1) of SU(2), in eventually destroying superconductivity under certain circumstances. The model may have applications to the theory of high-temperature superconductivity. In particular, we argue that in the regime of the couplings leading to the broken SU(2) phase, the model may provide an explanation on the appearance of a pseudo-gap phase, lying between the antiferromagnetic and the superconducting phases. In such a phase, a fermion mass gap appears in the theory, but there is no phase coherence, due to the Kosterlitz-Thouless mode of symmetry breaking. The absence of superconductivity in this phase is attributed to non-perturbative effects (instantons) of the subgroup U(1) of SU(2).

Dynamical Gauge Symmetry Breaking and Superconductivity in three-dimensional systems

We discuss dynamical breaking of non-abelian gauge groups in three dimensional (lattice) gauge systems via the formation of fermion condensates. A physically relevant example, motivated by condensed-matter physics, is that of a fermionic gauge theory with group $SU(2)\otimes U_S(1) \otimes U_{E}(1)$. In the strong U_S(1) region, the SU(2) symmetry breaks down to a U(1), due to the formation of a parity-invariant fermion condensate. We conjecture a phase diagram for the theory involving a critical line, which separates the regions of broken SU(2) symmetry from those where the symmetry is restored. In the broken phase, the effective Abelian gauge theory is closely related to an earlier model of two-dimensional parity-invariant superconductivity in doped antiferromagnets. The superconductivity in the model occurs in the Kosterlitz-Thouless mode, since strong phase fluctuations prevent the existence of a local order parameter. Some physical consequences of the $SU(2) \times U_S(1)$ phase diagram for the (doping-dependent) parameter space of this condensed-matter model are briefly discussed.

Gauge-theory approach to planar doped antiferromagnets and external magnetic fields

A review is given of a relativistic non-Abelian gauge theory approach to the physics of spin-charge separation in doped quantum antiferromagnetic planar systems, proposed recently by the authors. Emphasis is put on the effects of constant external magnetic fields on excitations about the superconducting state in the model. The electrically-charged Dirac fermions (holons), describing excitations about specific points on the fermi surface, e.g. those corresponding to the nodes of a d-wave superconducting gap in high-$T_c$ cuprates, condense, resulting in the opening of a Kosterlitz-Thouless-like gap (KT) at such nodes. In the presence of strong external magnetic fields at the surface regions of the planar superconductor, in the direction perpendicular to the superconducting planes, these KT gaps appear to be enhanced. Our preliminary analysis, based on analytic Scwhinger-Dyson treatments, seems to indicate that for an even number of Dirac fermion species, required in our model as a result of gauging a particle-hole SU(2) symmetry, Parity or Time Reversal violation does not necessarily occurs.Based on these considerations, we argue that recent experimental findings, concerning thermal conductivity plateaux of quasiparticles in planar high-$T_c$ cuprates in strong external magnetic fields, may indicate the presence of such KT gaps, caused by charged Dirac-fermion excitations in these materials, as suggested in the above model.

Three-dimensional lattice U(1) gauge-Higgs model at low $m_H$

We study the non-compact version of the U(1) gauge-Higgs model in three dimensions for $m_H = 30 GeV.$ We found that, using this formulation, rather modest lattices approach quite well the infinite volume behaviour. The phase transition is first order, as expected for this Higgs mass. The latent heat (in units of $T_{cr}^4$) is compatible with the predictions of the two-loop effective potential; it is an order of magnitude less than the corresponding SU(2) value. The transition temperature and $<φ^* φ>$ in units of the critical temperature are also compatible with the perturbative results.

3d physics and the electroweak phase transition: a framework for lattice Monte Carlo analysis

We discuss a framework relying on both perturbative and non-perturbative lattice computations which will be able to reliably determine the parameters of the EW phase transition. A motivation for the use of 3d effective theory in the lattice simulations, rather than the complete 4d one, is provided. We introduce and compute on the 2-loop level a number of gauge-invariant order parameters -- condensates, which can be measured with high accuracy in MC simulations. The relation between MSbar and lattice condensates is found, together with the relation between lattice couplings and continuum parameters (the constant physics curves). These relations are exact in the continuum limit.
