Multi-localized time-symmetric initial data for the Einstein vacuum equations

We construct a class of time-symmetric initial data sets for the Einstein vacuum equation modeling elementary configurations of multiple ``almost isolated" systems. Each such initial data set consists of a collection of several localized sources of gravitational radiation, and lies in a family of data sets which is closed under scaling out the distances between the systems by arbitrarily large amounts. This class contains data sets which are not asymptotically flat, but to which nonetheless a finite ADM mass can be ascribed. The construction proceeds by a gluing scheme using the Brill--Lindquist metric as a template. Such initial data are motivated in part by a desire to understand the dynamical interaction of distant systems in the context of general relativity. As a by-product of the construction, we produce complete, scalar-flat initial data with trivial topology and infinitely many minimal spheres, as well as initial data with infinitely many Einstein--Rosen bridges.

Localized deformation for initial data sets with the dominant energy condition

We consider localized deformation for initial data sets of the Einstein field equations with the dominant energy condition. Deformation results with the weak inequality need to be handled delicately. We introduce a modified constraint operator to absorb the first order change of the metric in the dominant energy condition. By establishing the local surjectivity theorem, we can promote the dominant energy condition to the strict inequality by compactly supported variations and obtain new gluing results with the dominant energy condition. The proof of local surjectivity is a modification of the earlier work for the usual constraint map by the first named author and R. Schoen and by P. Chruściel and E. Delay, with some refined analysis.

Deformation of Scalar Curvature and Volume

The stationary points of the total scalar curvature functional on the space of unit volume metrics on a given closed manifold are known to be precisely the Einstein metrics. One may consider the modified problem of finding stationary points for the volume functional on the space of metrics whose scalar curvature is equal to a given constant. In this paper, we localize a condition satisfied by such stationary points to smooth bounded domains. The condition involves a generalization of the static equations, and we interpret solutions (and their boundary values) of this equation variationally. On domains carrying a metric that does not satisfy the condition, we establish a local deformation theorem that allows one to achieve simultaneously small prescribed changes of the scalar curvature and of the volume by a compactly supported variation of the metric. We apply this result to obtain a localized gluing theorem for constant scalar curvature metrics in which the total volume is preserved. Finally, we note that starting from a counterexample of Min-Oo's conjecture such as that of Brendle-Marques-Neves, counterexamples of arbitrarily large volume and different topological types can be constructed.

Scalar Curvature and the Einstein Constraint Equations

We survey some results on scalar curvature and properties of solutions to the Einstein constraint equations. Topics include an extended discussion of asymptotically flat solutions to the constraint equations, including recent results on the geometry of the center of mass of such solutions. We also review methods to construct solutions to the constraint equations, including the conformal method, as well as gluing techniques for which it is important to understand both conformal and non-conformal deformations of the scalar curvature.

Construction of N-body initial data sets in general relativity

Given a collection of N solutions of the (3+1) vacuum Einstein constraint equations which are asymptotically Euclidean, we show how to construct a new solution of the constraints which is itself asymptotically Euclidean, and which contains specified sub-regions of each of the N given solutions. This generalizes earlier work which handled the time-symmetric case, thus providing a construction of large classes of initial data for the many body problem in general relativity.
