Performance-oriented DevOps: A Research Agenda

DevOps is a trend towards a tighter integration between development (Dev) and operations (Ops) teams. The need for such an integration is driven by the requirement to continuously adapt enterprise applications (EAs) to changes in the business environment. As of today, DevOps concepts have been primarily introduced to ensure a constant flow of features and bug fixes into new releases from a functional perspective. In order to integrate a non-functional perspective into these DevOps concepts this report focuses on tools, activities, and processes to ensure one of the most important quality attributes of a software system, namely performance. Performance describes system properties concerning its timeliness and use of resources. Common metrics are response time, throughput, and resource utilization. Performance goals for EAs are typically defined by setting upper and/or lower bounds for these metrics and specific business transactions. In order to ensure that such performance goals can be met, several activities are required during development and operation of these systems as well as during the transition from Dev to Ops. Activities during development are typically summarized by the term Software Performance Engineering (SPE), whereas activities during operations are called Application Performance Management (APM). SPE and APM were historically tackled independently from each other, but the newly emerging DevOps concepts require and enable a tighter integration between both activity streams. This report presents existing solutions to support this integration as well as open research challenges in this area.

Study on successive superconducting transitions in Ta2_{2}S2_{2}C from electrical resistivity and nonlinear AC magnetic susceptibility

Ta2_{2}S2_{2}C compound undergoes superconducting transitions at Tcl=3.60±0.02T_{cl} = 3.60 \pm 0.02 K and Tcu=9.0±0.2T_{cu} = 9.0 \pm 0.2 K. The nature of successive superconducting transitions has been studied from electrical resistivity, linear and nonlinear AC magnetic susceptibilities. The resistivity ρρ at HH = 0 shows a local maximum near TcuT_{cu}, a kink-like behavior around TclT_{cl}, and reduces to zero at below T0T_{0} = 2.1 K. The ln⁡T\ln T dependence of ρρ is observed at HH = 50 kOe at low temperatures, which is due to two-dimensional weak-localization effect. Below TcuT_{cu} a two-dimensional superconducting phase occurs in each TaC layer. The linear and nonlinear susceptibilities χ1′′χ_{1}^{\prime\prime}, χ3′χ_{3}^{\prime}, χ5′χ_{5}^{\prime}, and χ7′χ_{7}^{\prime} as well as the difference δχδχ (=χFC−χZFC= χ_{FC} - χ_{ZFC}) between the FC and ZFC susceptibilities, start to appear below 6.0 K, the onset temperature of irreversibility. A drastic growth of the in-plane superconducting coherence length below 6.0 K gives rise to a three-dimensional superconducting phase below TclT_{cl}, through interplanar Josephson couplings between adjacent TaC layers. The oscillatory behavior of χ3′′χ_{3}^{\prime\prime}, χ5′′χ_{5}^{\prime\prime}, and χ7′′χ_{7}^{\prime\prime} below TclT_{cl} is related to the nonlinear behavior arising from the thermally activated flux flow.

H-T phase diagram and the nature of Vortex-glass phase in a quasi two-dimensional superconductor: Sn metal layer sandwiched between graphene sheets

The magnetic properties of a quasi two-dimensional superconductor, Sn-metal graphite (MG), are studied using DC and AC magnetic susceptibility. Sn-MG has a unique layered structure where Sn metal layer is sandwiched between adjacent graphene sheets. This compound undergoes a superconducting transition at TcT_{c} = 3.75 K at HH = 0. The HH-TT diagram of Sn-MG is similar to that of a quasi two-dimensional superconductors. The phase boundaries of vortex liquid, vortex glass, and vortex lattice phase merge into a multicritical point located at T∗T^{*} = 3.4 K and H∗H^{*} = 40 Oe. There are two irreversibility lines denoted by HglH_{gl} (de Almeida-Thouless type) and Hgl′H_{gl^{\prime}} (Gabay-Toulouse type), intersecting at T0′T_{0}^{\prime}= 2.5 K and H0′H_{0}^{\prime} = 160 Oe. The nature of slow dynamic and nonlinearity of the vortex glass phase is studied.

Magnetic-field induced superconductor-metal-insulator transitions in bismuth metal-graphite

Bismuth-metal graphite (MG) has a unique layered structure where Bi nanoparticles are encapsulated between adjacent sheets of nanographites. The superconductivity below TcT_{c} (= 2.48 K) is due to Bi nanoparticles. The Curie-like susceptibility below 30 K is due to conduction electrons localized near zigzag edges of nanographites. A magnetic-field induced transition from metallic to semiconductor-like phase is observed in the in-plane resistivity ρaρ_{a} around HcH_{c} (≈\approx 25 kOe) for both HH⊥\perpcc and HH∥\parallelcc (cc: c axis). A negative magnetoresistance in ρaρ_{a} for HH⊥\perpcc (0<H≤<H\leq3.5 kOe) and a logarithmic divergence in ρaρ_{a} with decreasing temperature for HH∥\parallelcc (HH >> 40 kOe) suggest the occurrence of two-dimensional weak localization effect.

Successive superconducting transitions and Anderson localization effect in Ta2_{2}S2_{2}C

A complex carbide Ta2_{2}S2_{2}C consists of van der Waals (vdw)-bonded layers with a stacking sequence ...... C-Ta-S-vdw-S-Ta-C- ...... along the c axis. The magnetic properties of this compound have been studied from DC and AC magnetic susceptibility. Ta2_{2}S2_{2}C undergoes successive superconducting transitions of a hierachical nature at Tcl=3.61±0.01T_{cl} = 3.61 \pm 0.01 K [Hc1(l)(0)=28±2H_{c1}^{(l)}(0) = 28 \pm 2 Oe and Hc2(l)(0)=7.7±0.2H_{c2}^{(l)}(0) = 7.7 \pm 0.2 kOe] and Tcu=9.0±0.2T_{cu} = 9.0 \pm 0.2 K [Hc2(u)(0)=6.0±0.3H_{c2}^{(u)}(0) = 6.0 \pm 0.3 kOe]. The intermediate phase between TcuT_{cu} and TclT_{cl}, where δχ(=χFC−χZFC)≈0δχ(= χ_{FC} - χ_{ZFC}) \approx 0, is an intra-grain superconductive state occurring in the Ta-C layers in Ta2_{2}S2_{2}C. The low temperature phase below TclT_{cl}, where δχδχ clearly appears, is an inter-grain superconductive state. The magnetic susceptibility at HH well above Hc2(l)(0)H_{c2}^{(l)}(0) is described by a sum of a diamagnetic susceptibility and a Curie-like behavior. The latter is due to the localized magnetic moments of conduction electrons associated with the Anderson localization effect, occurring in the 1T-TaS2_{2} type structure in Ta2_{2}S2_{2}C.

Superconductivity and spin-glass like behavior in system with Pd sheet sandwiched between graphene sheets

Pd-metal graphite (Pd-MG) has a layered structure, where each Pd sheet is sandwiched between adjacent graphene sheets. DC magnetization and AC magnetic susceptibility of Pd-MG have been measured using a SQUID magnetometer. Pd-MG undergoes a superconducting transition at TcT_{c} (=3.63±0.04= 3.63 \pm 0.04 K). The superconductivity occurs in Pd sheets. The relaxation of MZFCM_{ZFC} (aging), which is common to spin glass systems, is also observed below TcT_{c}. The relaxation rate S(t)S(t) shows a peak at a characteristic time tcrt_{cr}, which is longer than a wait time twt_{w}. The irreversibility between χZFCχ_{ZFC} and χFCχ_{FC} occurs well above TcT_{c}. The susceptibility χFCχ_{FC} obeys a Curie-Weiss behavior with a negative Curie-Weiss temperature (−13.1≤Θ≤−5.4-13.1 \leq Θ\leq -5.4 K). The growth of antiferromagnetic order is limited by the disordered nature of nanographites, forming spin glass-like behavior at low temperatures in graphene sheets.
