Stokes and Navier-Stokes equations subject to partial slip on uniform $C^{2,1}$-domains in $L_q$-spaces

This note concerns well-posedness of the Stokes and Navier-Stokes equations on uniform $C^{2,1}$-domains on $L_q$. In particular, classes of non-Helmholtz domains, i.e., domains for which the Helmholtz decomposition does not exist, are adressed. On the one hand, it is proved that the Stokes equations subject to partial slip in general are not well-posed in the standard setting that usually applies for Helmholtz domains. On the other hand, it is proved that under certain reasonable assumptions the Stokes and Navier-Stokes equations subject to partial slip are well-posed in a generalized setting. This setting relies on a generalized version of the Helmholtz decomposition which exists under suitable conditions on the intersection and the sum of gradient and solenoidal fields in $L_q$. The proved well-posedness of the Stokes resolvent problem turns even out to be equivalent to the existence of the generalized Helmholtz decomposition. The presented approach, for instance, includes the sector-like non-Helmholtz domains introduced by Bogovski\uı and Maslennikova as well as further wide classes of uniform $C^{2,1}$-domains.

Optimal Sobolev regularity for the Stokes equations on a 2D wedge domain

In this note we prove that the solution of the stationary and the instationary Stokes equations subject to perfect slip boundary conditions on a 2D wedge domain admits optimal regularity in the $L^p$-setting, i.p. it is $W^{2,p}$ in space. This improves known results in the literature to a large extend. For instance, in [21, Theorem 1.1 and Corollary 3] it is proved that the Laplace and the Stokes operator in the underlying setting have maximal regularity. In that result the range of p admitting $W^{2,p}$ regularity, however, is restricted to the interval $1<p<1+δ$ for small $δ>0$, depending on the opening angle of the wedge. This note gives a detailed answer to the question, whether the optimal Sobolev regularity extends to the full range $1<p<\infty$. We will show that for the Laplacian this does only hold on a suitable subspace, but, depending on the opening angle of the wedge domain, not for every $p\in(1,\infty)$ on the entire $L^p$-space. On the other hand, for the Stokes operator in the space of solenoidal fields $L^p_σ$ we obtain optimal Sobolev regularity for the full range $1<p<\infty$ and for all opening angles less that $π$. Roughly speaking, this relies on the fact that an existing $ bad$ part of $L^p$ for the Laplacian is complementary to the space of solenoidal vector fields.

Analysis of a Living Fluid Continuum Model

Generalized Navier-Stokes equations which were proposed recently to describe active turbulence in living fluids are analyzed rigorously. Results on wellposedness and stability in the $L^2(\mathbb{R}^n)$-setting are derived. Due to the presence of a Swift-Hohenberg term global wellposedness in a strong setting for arbitrary initial data in $L^2_σ(\mathbb{R}^n)$ is available. Based on the existence of global strong solutions, results on linear and nonlinear (in-) stability for the disordered steady state and the manifold of ordered polar steady states are derived, depending on the involved parameters.
