dNLS Flow on Discrete Space Curves

The local induction equation, or the binormal flow on space curves is a well-known model of deformation of space curves as it describes the dynamics of vortex filaments, and the complex curvature is governed by the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS). In this paper, we present its discrete analogue, namely, a model of deformation of discrete space curves by the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation (dNLS). We also present explicit formulas for both NLS and dNLS flows in terms of the $τ$ function of the 2-component KP hierarchy.

A loop group method for minimal surfaces in the three-dimensional Heisenberg group

We characterize constant mean curvature surfaces in the three-dimensional Heisenberg group by a family of flat connections on the trivial bundle $\D \times \GL$ over a simply connected domain $\mathbb{D}$ in the complex plane. In particular for minimal surfaces, we give an immersion formula, the so-called Sym-formula, and a generalized Weierstrass type representation via the loop group method.

Constant mean curvature surfaces in hyperbolic 3-space via loop groups

In hyperbolic 3-space $\mathbb{H}^3$ surfaces of constant mean curvature $H$ come in three types, corresponding to the cases $0 \leq H < 1$, $H = 1$, $H > 1$. Via the Lawson correspondence the latter two cases correspond to constant mean curvature surfaces in Euclidean 3-space $\mathbb{E}^3$ with H=0 and $H \neq 0$, respectively. These surface classes have been investigated intensively in the literature. For the case $0 \leq H < 1$ there is no Lawson correspondence in Euclidean space and there are relatively few publications. Examples have been difficult to construct. In this paper we present a generalized Weierstraß type representation for surfaces of constant mean curvature in $\mathbb{H}^3$ with particular emphasis on the case of mean curvature $0\leq H < 1$. In particular, the generalized Weierstraß type representation presented in this paper enables us to construct simultaneously minimal surfaces (H=0) and non-minimal constant mean curvature surfaces ($0<H<1$).

Discrete mKdV and Discrete Sine-Gordon Flows on Discrete Space Curves

In this paper, we consider the discrete deformation of the discrete space curves with constant torsion described by the discrete mKdV or the discrete sine-Gordon equations, and show that it is formulated as the torsion-preserving equidistant deformation on the osculating plane which satisfies the isoperimetric condition. The curve is reconstructed from the deformation data by using the Sym-Tafel formula. The isoperimetric equidistant deformation of the space curves does not preserve the torsion in general. However, it is possible to construct the torsion-preserving deformation by tuning the deformation parameters. Further, it is also possible to make an arbitrary choice of the deformation described by the discrete mKdV equation or by the discrete sine-Gordon equation at each step. We finally show that the discrete deformation of discrete space curves yields the discrete K-surfaces.

Constant Gaussian curvature surfaces in the 3-sphere via loop groups

In this paper we study constant positive Gauss curvature $K$ surfaces in the 3-sphere $S^3$ with $0<K<1$ as well as constant negative curvature surfaces. We show that the so-called normal Gauss map for a surface in $S^3$ with Gauss curvature $K<1$ is Lorentz harmonic with respect to the metric induced by the second fundamental form if and only if $K$ is constant. We give a uniform loop group formulation for all such surfaces with $K\neq 0$, and use the generalized d'Alembert method to construct examples. This representation gives a natural correspondence between such surfaces with $K<0$ and those with $0<K<1$.

Discrete Integrable Systems and Hodograph Transformations Arising from Motions of Discrete Plane Curves

We consider integrable discretizations of some soliton equations associated with the motions of plane curves: the Wadati-Konno-Ichikawa elastic beam equation, the complex Dym equation, and the short pulse equation. They are related to the modified KdV or the sine-Gordon equations by the hodograph transformations. Based on the observation that the hodograph transformations are regarded as the Euler-Lagrange transformations of the curve motions, we construct the discrete analogues of the hodograph transformations, which yield integrable discretizations of those soliton equations.

Explicit solutions to the semi-discrete modified KdV equation and motion of discrete plane curves

We construct explicit solutions to continuous motion of discrete plane curves described by a semi-discrete potential modified KdV equation. Explicit formulas in terms the $τ$ function are presented. Bäcklund transformations of the discrete curves are also discussed. We finally consider the continuous limit of discrete motion of discrete plane curves described by the discrete potential modified KdV equation to motion of smooth plane curves characterized by the potential modified KdV equation.

Gauss maps of constant mean curvature surfaces in three-dimensional homogeneous spaces

It is well-known that for a surface in a 3-dimensional real space form the constancy of the mean curvature is equivalent to the harmonicity of the Gauss map. However, this is not true in general for surfaces in an arbitrary 3-dimensional ambient space. In this paper we study this problem for surfaces in an important and very natural family of 3-dimensional ambient spaces, namely homogeneous spaces. In particular, we obtain a full classification of constant mean curvature surfaces, whose Gauss map satisfies the more mild condition of vertical harmonicity, in all 3-dimensional homogeneous spaces.
