A Convection-Diffusion model on a star shaped graph

In this paper we study a convection-diffusion equation on a star-shaped graph composed by $n$ incoming edges and $m$ outgoing edges with a nonlinearity $f\in C^1(\rr)$ satisfying some additional general conditions. First, we prove the global well-posedness of the solutions of the system under consideration. Next, in the particular case that the nonlinear convection is given by $\partial_x(f(u(t, x))$ with $f(s)=-a|s|^{q-1}s$ with $q\geq 2$ and $a\in \rr$ verifying $(n-m)a\geq 0$, we analyze the long time behavior of the solutions. For $q> 2$ we find that the asymptotic behavior of the solutions is given by some self-similar profiles of the heat equation on the considered structure. In the case $q=2$, the nonnegative/nonpositive solutions converge to the self-similar profiles of Burgers' equation. Explicit representations of the limit profiles are obtained.

A local/nonlocal diffusion model

In this paper, we study some qualitative properties for an evolution problem that combines local and nonlocal diffusion operators acting in two different subdomains and, coupled in such a way that, the resulting evolution problem is the gradient flow of an energy functional. The coupling takes place at the interface between the regions in which the different diffusions take place. We prove existence and uniqueness results, as well as, that the model preserves the total mass of the initial condition. We also study the asymptotic behavior of the solutions. Finally, we show a suitable way to recover the heat equation at the whole domain from taking the limit at the nonlocal rescaled kernel.

A Nonlinear Mean Value Property for Monge-Ampère

In recent years there has been an increasing interest in whether a mean value property, known to characterize harmonic functions, can be extended in some weak form to solutions of nonlinear equations. This question has been partially motivated by the surprising connection between Random Tug-of-War games and the normalized $p-$Laplacian discovered some years ago, where a nonlinear asymptotic mean value property for solutions of a PDE is related to a dynamic programming principle for an appropriate game. Currently, asymptotic nonlinear mean value formulas are rare in the literature and our goal is to show that an asymptotic nonlinear mean value formula holds for the classical Monge-Ampère equation.

Homogenization for nonlocal problems with smooth kernels

In this paper we consider the homogenization problem for a nonlocal equation that involve different smooth kernels. We assume that the spacial domain is divided into a sequence of two subdomains $A_n \cup B_n$ and we have three different smooth kernels, one that controls the jumps from $A_n$ to $A_n$, a second one that controls the jumps from $B_n$ to $B_n$ and the third one that governs the interactions between $A_n$ and $B_n$. Assuming that $χ_{A_n} (x) \to X(x)$ weakly-* in $L^\infty$ (and then $χ_{B_n} (x) \to (1-X)(x)$ weakly-* in $L^\infty$) as $n \to \infty$ we show that there is an homogenized limit system in which the three kernels and the limit function $X$ appear. We deal with both Neumann and Dirichlet boundary conditions. Moreover, we also provide a probabilistic interpretation of our results.

Mixing local and nonlocal evolution equations

In this paper we study the homogenization of a stochastic process and its associated evolution equations in which we mix a local part (given by a Brownian motion with a reflection on the boundary) and a nonlocal part (given by a jump process with a smooth kernel). We consider a sequence of partitions of the (fixed) spacial domain into two parts (local and nonlocal) that are mixed in such a way that they both have positive density at every point in the limit. Under adequate hypotheses on the sequence of partitions, we prove convergence of the associated densities (that are solutions to an evolution equation with coupled local and nonlocal parts in two different regions of the domain) to the unique solution to a limit evolution system in which the local part disappears and the nonlocal part survives but divided into two different components. We also obtain convergence in distributions of the processes associated to the partitions and prove that the limit process has a density pair that coincides with the limit of the densities.

The evolution problem associated with eigenvalues of the Hessian

In this paper we study the evolution problem \[ \left\lbrace\begin{array}{ll} u_t (x,t)- λ_j(D^2 u(x,t)) = 0, & \text{in } Ω\times (0,+\infty), \\ u(x,t) = g(x,t), & \text{on } \partial Ω\times (0,+\infty), \\ u(x,0) = u_0(x), & \text{in } Ω, \end{array}\right. \] where $Ω$ is a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^N$ (that verifies a suitable geometric condition on its boundary) and $λ_j(D^2 u)$ stands for the $j-$st eigenvalue of the Hessian matrix $D^2u$. We assume that $u_0 $ and $g$ are continuous functions with the compatibility condition $u_0(x) = g(x,0)$, $x\in \partial Ω$. We show that the (unique) solution to this problem exists in the viscosity sense and can be approximated by the value function of a two-player zero-sum game as the parameter measuring the size of the step that we move in each round of the game goes to zero. In addition, when the boundary datum is independent of time, $g(x,t) =g(x)$, we show that viscosity solutions to this evolution problem stabilize and converge exponentially fast to the unique stationary solution as $t\to \infty$. For $j=1$ the limit profile is just the convex envelope inside $Ω$ of the boundary datum $g$, while for $j=N$ it is the concave envelope. We obtain this result with two different techniques: with PDE tools and and with game theoretical arguments. Moreover, in some special cases (for affine boundary data) we can show that solutions coincide with the stationary solution in finite time (that depends only on $Ω$ and not on the initial condition $u_0$).

Nonlocal problems in perforated domains

In this paper we analyze nonlocal equations in perforated domains. We consider nonlocal problems of the form $f(x) = \int_{B} J(x-y) (u(y) - u(x)) dy$ with $x$ in a perforated domain $Ω^ε\subset Ω$. Here $J$ is a non-singular kernel. We think about $Ω^ε$ as a fixed set $Ω$ from where we have removed a subset that we call the holes. We deal both with the Neumann and Dirichlet conditions in the holes and assume a Dirichlet condition outside $Ω$. In the later case we impose that $u$ vanishes in the holes but integrate in the whole $\mathbb{R}^N$ ($B=\mathbb{R}^N$) and in the former we just consider integrals in $\mathbb{R}^N$ minus the holes ($B=\mathbb{R}^N \setminus (Ω\setminus Ω^ε)$). Assuming weak convergence of the holes, specifically, under the assumption that the characteristic function of $Ω^ε$ has a weak limit, $χ_ε \rightharpoonup \mathcal{X}$ weakly$^*$ in $L^\infty(Ω)$, we analyze the limit as $ε\to 0$ of the solutions to the nonlocal problems proving that there is a nonlocal limit problem. In the case in which the holes are periodically removed balls we obtain that the critical radius is of order of the size of the typical cell (that gives the period). In addition, in this periodic case, we also study the behavior of these nonlocal problems when we rescale the kernel in order to approximate local PDE problems.

Eigenvalues for a nonlocal pseudo $p-$Laplacian

In this paper we study the eigenvalue problems for a nonlocal operator of order $s$ that is analogous to the local pseudo $p-$Laplacian. We show that there is a sequence of eigenvalues $λ_n \to \infty$ and that the first one is positive, simple, isolated and has a positive and bounded associated eigenfunction. For the first eigenvalue we also analyze the limits as $p\to \infty$ (obtaining a limit nonlocal eigenvalue problem analogous to the pseudo infinity Laplacian) and as $s\to 1^-$ (obtaining the first eigenvalue for a local operator of $p-$Laplacian type). To perform this study we have to introduce anisotropic fractional Sobolev spaces and prove some of their properties.

The first nontrivial eigenvalue for a system of $p-$Laplacians with Neumann and Dirichlet boundary conditions

We deal with the first eigenvalue for a system of two $p-$Laplacians with Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. If $Δ_{p}w=\mbox{div}(|\nabla w|^{p-2}w)$ stands for the $p-$Laplacian and $\fracα{p}+\fracβ{q}=1,$ we consider $$ \begin{cases} -Δ_pu= λα|u|^{α-2} u|v|^β &\text{ in }Ω,\\ -Δ_q v= λβ|u|^α|v|^{β-2}v &\text{ in }Ω,\\ \end{cases} $$ with mixed boundary conditions $$ u=0, \qquad |\nabla v|^{q-2}\dfrac{\partial v}{\partial ν}=0, \qquad \text{on }\partial Ω. $$ We show that there is a first non trivial eigenvalue that can be characterized by the variational minimization problem $$ λ_{p,q}^{α,β} = \min \left\{\dfrac{\displaystyle\int_Ω\dfrac{|\nabla u|^p}{p}\, dx +\int_Ω\dfrac{|\nabla v|^q}{q}\, dx} {\displaystyle\int_Ω |u|^α|v|^β\, dx} \colon (u,v)\in \mathcal{A}_{p,q}^{α,β}\right\}, $$ where $$ \mathcal{A}_{p,q}^{α,β}=\left\{(u,v)\in W^{1,p}_0(Ω)\times W^{1,q}(Ω)\colon uv\not\equiv0\text{ and }\int_Ω|u|^α|v|^{β-2}v \, dx=0\right\}. $$ We also study the limit of $λ_{p,q}^{α,β} $ as $p,q\to \infty$ assuming that $\fracα{p} \to Γ\in (0,1)$, and $ \frac{q}{p} \to Q \in (0,\infty)$ as $p,q\to \infty.$ We find that this limit problem interpolates between the pure Dirichlet and Neumann cases for a single equation when we take $Q=1$ and the limits $Γ\to 1$ and $Γ\to 0$.

An existence result for the infinity laplacian with non-homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions using Tug-of-War games

In this paper we show how to use a Tug-of-War game to obtain existence of a viscosity solution to the infinity laplacian with non-homogeneous mixed boundary conditions. For a Lipschitz and positive function $g$ there exists a viscosity solution of the mixed boundary value problem, $$ \{\begin{array}{ll} \displaystyle -Δ_{\infty}u(x)=0\quad & \text{in} Ω, \displaystyle \frac{\partial u}{\partial n}(x)= g (x)\quad & \text{on} Γ_N, \displaystyle u(x)= 0 \quad & \text{on} Γ_D. \end{array}. $$

Estimates for Nonlinear Harmonic Measures on Trees

In this paper we give some estimates for nonlinear harmonic measures on trees. In particular, we estimate in terms of the size of a set $D$ the value at the origin of the solution to $ u(x)=F((x,0),\dots,(x,m-1))$ for every $x\in\mathbb{T}_m, $ a directed tree with $m$ branches with initial datum $f+χ_D$. Here $F$ is an averaging operator on $\mathbb{R}^m$, $x$ is a vertex of a directed tree $\mathbb{T}_m$ with regular $m$-branching and $(x,i)$ denotes a successor of that vertex for $0\le i\le m-1$.

Existence, uniqueness and decay rates for evolution equations on trees

We study evolution equations governed by an averaging operator on a directed tree, showing existence and uniqueness of solutions. In addition we find conditions of the initial condition that allows us to find the asymptotic decay rate of the solutions as $t\to \infty$. It turns out that this decay rate is not uniform, it strongly depends on how the initial condition goes to zero as one goes down in the tree.

The first eigenvalue of the $p-$Laplacian on quantum graphs

We study the first eigenvalue of the $p-$Laplacian (with $1<p<\infty$) on a quantum graph with Dirichlet or Kirchoff boundary conditions on the nodes. We find lower and upper bounds for this eigenvalue when we prescribe the total sum of the lengths of the edges and the number of Dirichlet nodes of the graph. Also we find a formula for the shape derivative of the first eigenvalue (assuming that it is simple) when we perturb the graph by changing the length of an edge. Finally, we study in detail the limit cases $p\to \infty$ and $p\to 1$.

The unique continuation property for a nonlinear equation on trees

In this paper we study the game $p-$Laplacian on a tree, that is, $$ u(x)=\fracα2\left\{\max_{y\in §(x)}u(y) + \min_{y\in §(x)}u(y)\right\} + \fracβ{m}\sum_{y\in §(x)} u(y), $$ here $x$ is a vertex of the tree and $S(x)$ is the set of successors of $x$. We study the family of the subsets of the tree that enjoy the unique continuation property, that is, subsets $U$ such that $u\mid_U=0$ implies $u \equiv 0$.

An obstacle problem for Tug-of-War games

We consider the obstacle problem for the infinity Laplace equation. Given a Lipschitz boundary function and a Lipschitz obstacle we prove the existence and uniqueness of a super infinity-harmonic function constrained to lie above the obstacle which is infinity harmonic where it lies strictly above the obstacle. Moreover, we show that this function is the limit of value functions of a game we call obstacle tug-of-war.

Decay estimates for nonlinear nonlocal diffusion problems in the whole space

In this paper we obtain bounds for the decay rate in the $L^r (\rr^d)$-norm for the solutions to a nonlocal and nolinear evolution equation, namely, $$u_t(x,t) = \int_{\rr^d} K(x,y) |u(y,t)- u(x,t)|^{p-2} (u(y,t)- u(x,t)) \, dy, $$ with $ x \in \rr^d$, $ t>0$. Here we consider a kernel $K(x,y)$ of the form $K(x,y)=ψ(y-a(x))+ψ(x-a(y))$, where $ψ$ is a bounded, nonnegative function supported in the unit ball and $a$ is a linear function $a(x)= Ax$. To obtain the decay rates we derive lower and upper bounds for the first eigenvalue of a nonlocal diffusion operator of the form $ T(u) = - \int_{\rr^d} K(x,y) |u(y)-u(x)|^{p-2} (u(y)-u(x)) \, dy$, with $1 \leq p < \infty$. The upper and lower bounds that we obtain are sharp and provide an explicit expression for the first eigenvalue in the whole $\rr^d$: $$ λ_{1,p} (\rr^d) = 2(\int_{\rr^d} ψ(z) \, dz)|\frac{1}{|\det{A}|^{1/p}} -1|^p. $$ Moreover, we deal with the $p=\infty$ eigenvalue problem studying the limit as $p \to \infty$ of $λ_{1,p}^{1/p}$.

Discontinuous gradient constraints and the infinity Laplacian

Motivated by tug-of-war games and asymptotic analysis of certain variational problems, we consider a gradient constraint problem involving the infinity Laplace operator. We prove that this problem always has a solution that is unique if a certain regularity condition on the constraint is satisfied. If this regularity condition fails, then solutions obtained from game theory and $L^p$-approximation need not coincide.

Tug-of-War games and parabolic problems with spatial and time dependence

In this paper we use probabilistic arguments (Tug-of-War games) to obtain existence of viscosity solutions to a parabolic problem of the form $$ {cases} K_{(x,t)}(D u)u_t (x,t)= \frac12 <D^2 u J_{(x,t)}(D u),J_{(x,t)}(D u) (x,t) &{in} Ω_T, u(x,t)=F(x)&{on}Γ, {cases} $$ where $Ω_T=Ω\times(0,T]$ and $Γ$ is its parabolic boundary. This problem can be viewed as a version with spatial and time dependence of the evolution problem given by the infinity Laplacian, $ u_t (x,t)= <D^2 u (x,t) \frac{D u}{|Du|} (x,t),\, \frac{D u}{|Du|} (x,t)>$.

p(x)-Harmonic functions with unbounded exponent in a subdomain

We study the Dirichlet problem $-÷(|\nabla u|^{p(x)-2} \nabla u) =0 $ in $Ω$, with $u=f$ on $\partial Ω$ and $p(x) = \infty$ in $D$, a subdomain of the reference domain $Ω$. The main issue is to give a proper sense to what a solution is. To this end, we consider the limit as $n \to \infty$ of the solutions $u_n$ to the corresponding problem when $p_n(x) =p(x) \wedge n$, in particular, with $p_n = n$ in $D$. Under suitable assumptions on the data, we find that such a limit exists and that it can be characterized as the unique solution of a variational minimization problem which is, in addition, $\infty$-harmonic within $D$. Moreover, we examine this limit in the viscosity sense and find the boundary value problem it satisfies in the whole of $Ω$.
