The International Linear Collider: Report to Snowmass 2021

The International Linear Collider (ILC) is on the table now as a new global energy-frontier accelerator laboratory taking data in the 2030s. The ILC addresses key questions for our current understanding of particle physics. It is based on a proven accelerator technology. Its experiments will challenge the Standard Model of particle physics and will provide a new window to look beyond it. This document brings the story of the ILC up to date, emphasizing its strong physics motivation, its readiness for construction, and the opportunity it presents to the US and the global particle physics community.

ILC Study Questions for Snowmass 2021

To aid contributions to the Snowmass 2021 US Community Study on physics at the International Linear Collider and other proposed $e^+e^-$ colliders, we present a list of study questions that could be the basis of useful Snowmass projects. We accompany this with links to references and resources on $e^+e^-$ physics, and a description of a new software framework that we are preparing for $e^+e^-$ studies at Snowmass.

Implications of the 750 GeV gamma-gamma Resonance as a Case Study for the International Linear Collider

If the gamma-gamma resonance at 750 GeV suggested by 2015 LHC data turns out to be a real effect, what are the implications for the physics case and upgrade path of the International Linear Collider? Whether or not the resonance is confirmed, this question provides an interesting case study testing the robustness of the ILC physics case. In this note, we address this question with two points: (1) Almost all models proposed for the new 750 GeV particle require additional new particles with electroweak couplings. The key elements of the 500 GeV ILC physics program---precision measurements of the Higgs boson, the top quark, and 4-fermion interactions---will powerfully discriminate among these models. This information will be important in conjunction with new LHC data, or alone, if the new particles accompanying the 750 GeV resonance are beyond the mass reach of the LHC. (2) Over a longer term, the energy upgrade of the ILC to 1 TeV already discussed in the ILC TDR will enable experiments in gamma-gamma and e+e- collisions to directly produce and study the 750 GeV particle from these unique initial states.

A Simplified Scheme for GUT-inspired Theories with Multiple Abelian Factors

Grand Unified Theories often involve additional Abelian group factors apart from the standard model hypercharge, that generally lead to loop-induced mixing gauge kinetic terms. In this letter, we show that at the one-loop level this effect can be avoided in many cases by a suitable choice of basis in group space and present a general scheme for the construction of this basis. In supersymmetric theories however, a residual mixing in the soft SUSY breaking gaugino mass terms may appear. We generalize the renormalization group equations for the gaugino mass terms to account for this effect. In a further calculation we also present the necessary adjustments in the renormalization group equations of the trilinear soft breaking couplings and the soft breaking scalar mass squares.

Exploring compactified HEIDI models at the LHC

Models with multi-scalar Higgs sectors inspired by a higher-dimensional setup are interesting alternatives to the Standard Model because, although they have a Higgs sector which gives mass to the W and Z gauge bosons as well as the SM fermions, this Higgs sector is potentially undiscoverable at the Large Hadron Collider or shows considerable deviations from the Standard Model Higgs sector. We investigate a compactified version of such models and study its phenomenology in the "golden" four-lepton channel at the LHC in areas of parameter space compatible with electroweak precision observables.

Introducing an interface between WHIZARD and FeynRules

While Monte Carlo event generators like WHIZARD have become indispensable tools in studying the impact of new physics on collider observables over the last decades, the implementation of new models in such packages has remained a rather awkward and error-prone process. Recently, the FeynRules package was introduced which greatly simplifies this process by providing a single unified model format from which model implementations for many different Monte Carlo codes can be derived automatically. In this note, we present an interface which extends FeynRules to provide this functionality also for the WHIZARD package, thus making WHIZARD's strengths and performance easily available to model builders.

Recent progress for Linear Collider SM/BSM Higgs/Electroweak Symmetry Breaking Calculations

In this paper I review the calculations (and partially simulations and theoretical studies) that have been made and published during the last two to three years focusing on the electroweak symmetry breaking sector and the Higgs boson(s) within the Standard Model and models beyond the Standard Model (BSM) at or relevant for either the International Linear Collider (ILC) or the Compact Linear Collider (CLIC), commonly abbreviated as Linear Collider (LC).

The NMSSM implementation in WHIZARD

The Next-To-Minimal-Supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model (NMSSM) has been in the focus of extensive studies in the past two decades. In anticipation of the LHC era, the interest in automatized tools that can calculate collider signatures has grown. We present the implementation of the NMSSM into the event generator WHIZARD. In addition to a brief review of the implementation, we discuss the testing and validation procedure. Phenomenological studies will not be presented here.

The Pati-Salam Supersymmetric SM (PSSSM)

Grand Unified Theories based on an E6 gauge group embed all Higgs- and matter fields within one 27 dimensional fundamental representation. In addition each 27 contains a right handed neutrino, an NMSSM-like standard model singlet and a pair of exotic particles, that couple quarks to leptons. The extended particle content spoils simple gauge unification as in the MSSM. By embedding the SM into a Pati-Salam gauge group above 10^16 GeV, one obtains a unification below the Planck-scale. We present a Markov chain Monte-Carlo algorithm to systematically scan the high dimensional parameter space and calculate low-energy spectra, as well as first results of our studies of the LHC phenomenology of leptoquarks and leptoquarkinos with the event generator WHIZARD.

Resonances and Unitarity in Weak Boson Scattering at the LHC

A crucial test of the Standard Model is the measurement of electroweak gauge-boson scattering. In this paper, we describe a generic parameterization aimed at a realistic simulation of weak-boson scattering at the LHC. The parameterization implements resonances of all possible spin and isospin combinations, properly matched to the low-energy effective (chiral) Lagrangian, includes leading higher-order effects and contains a minimal unitarization scheme. We implement the parameterization in the Monte-Carlo event generator WHIZARD and present results for complete partonic cross-section integration and event generation. We provide a comparison with the effective W approximation that previously has been used for most WW scattering studies at hadron colliders.

Pseudo-Axions in Little Higgs Models

In Little Higgs models, the Higgs mass is stabilized at the one-loop level by the mechanism of collective symmetry breaking. Typically, the basic ingredient of these models is a large(r) global symmetry group spontaneously broken at a scale of several TeV. The (light) Higgs appears as a Goldstone boson corresponding to a non-diagonal broken generator of this global symmetry. There could also be physical pseudoscalar particles present which belong to diagonal generators, having the properties of axions with masses in the range from several GeV up to the electroweak scale. We investigate the interesting phenomenology of these pseudo-axions at the linear collider as well as the photon collider.
