A vector equilibrium problem for symmetrically located point charges on a sphere

We study the equilibrium measure on the two dimensional sphere in the presence of an external field generated by r+1 equal point charges that are symmetrically located around the north pole. The support of the equilibrium measure is known as the droplet. The droplet has a motherbody which we characterize by means of a vector equilibrium problem (VEP) for r measures in the complex plane. The model undergoes two transitions which is reflected in the support of the first component of the minimizer of the VEP, namely the support can be a finite interval containing 0, the union of two intervals, or the full half-line. The two interval case corresponds to a droplet with two disjoint components, and it is analyzed by means of a genus one Riemann surface.

Intrinsic potentials in locally harmonic manifolds

We consider the problem of allocating a finite number of heat sources in the n-dimensional sphere. When only one such source -assumed to be of infinite temperature- is placed and assuming a constant cooling rate in the sphere, we prove that a (essentially) unique solution exists: the Constant Laplacian potential (CL-potential). Actually, this potential can be defined intrinsically in any CROSS (such as the real or complex projective spaces), providing a natural alternative to Riesz's potentials in manifolds lacking a standard isometric embedding into some Euclidean space. We describe an integral form of the corresponding CL-energy for the case of the sphere and prove a relation of minimizing configurations with separation distance and cap discrepancy. It follows that minimal configurations for the Riesz energy are asymptotically minimizing for the CL-energy.

Condition metrics in the three classical spaces

Let $(\mathcal{M},g)$ be a Riemannian manifold and $\mathcal{N}$ a $\mathcal{C}^2$ submanifold without boundary. If we multiply the metric $g$ by the inverse of the squared distance to $\mathcal{N}$, we obtain a new metric structure on $\mathcal{M}\setminus\mathcal{N}$ called the condition metric. A question about the behaviour of the geodesics in this new metric arises from the works of Shub and Beltrán: is it true that for every geodesic segment in the condition metric its closest point to $\mathcal{N}$ is one of its endpoints? Previous works show that the answer to this question is positive (under some smoothness hypotheses) when $\mathcal{M}$ is the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^n$. Here we prove that the answer is also positive for $\mathcal{M}$ being the sphere $\mathbb{S}^n$ and we give a counterexample showing that this property does not hold when $\mathcal{M}$ is the hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^n$.
