The first large-scale shell-model calculation of the two-neutrino double beta decay of $^{76}$Ge to the excited states in $^{76}$Se

Large-scale shell-model calculations were carried out for the half-lives and branching ratios of the $2νββ$ decay of $^{76}$Ge to the ground state and the lowest three excited states $2_1^+$, $0_2^+$ and $2_2^+$ in $^{76}$Se. In total, the wave functions of more than 10,000 intermediate $1^+$ states in $^{76}$As were calculated in a three-step procedure allowing an efficient use of the available computer resources. In the first step, 250 lowest states, below some 5 MeV of excitation energy, were calculated without truncations within a full major shell $0f_{5/2}-1p-0g_{9/2}$ for both protons and neutrons. The wave functions of the rest of the states, up to some 30 MeV, were computed in two more steps by introducing two consecutive stages of truncation. The computed magnitudes of the $2νββ$ nuclear matrix elements (including the value of the axial-vector coupling $g_{\rm A}$), $\vert M_{2ν}\vert g_{\rm A}^2$, converged to the values 0.168$g_{\rm A}^2$, $1.2\times10^{-3}$$g_{\rm A}^2$, 0.121$g_{\rm A}^2$, and $3.1\times10^{-3}$$g_{\rm A}^2$ for the $0^+_{\rm g.s.}$, $2^+_1$, $0^+_2$, and $2^+_2$ states, respectively. Using up-to-date phase-space integrals, the corresponding branching ratios were derived to be 99.926\%, 4.4$\times10^{-5}$\%, 0.074\% and 2.5$\times10^{-7}$\%. The experimental half-life $(1.926\pm0.094)\times10^{21}$ yr of the ground-state transition was used to derive the value $g_{\rm A}=0.80\pm0.01$ for the axial-vector coupling, which is consistent with other shell-model calculations suggesting a quenched value of $g_{\rm A}$. Using this value of $g_{\rm A}$, predictions for the transition half-lives were derived.

Second-forbidden nonunique $β^-$ decays of $^{24}$Na and $^{36}$Cl assessed by the nuclear shell model

We have performed a systematic study of the log$ft$ values, shape factors and electron spectra for the second-forbidden nonunique $β^-$ decays of $^{24}$Na$(4^+) \rightarrow ^{24}$Mg$(2^+)$ and $^{36}$Cl$(2^+) \rightarrow ^{36}$Ar$(0^+)$ transitions under the framework of the nuclear shell model. We have performed the shell model calculations in the $sd$ model space, using more recent microscopic effective interactions such as Daejeon16, chiral N3LO, and JISP16. These interactions are derived from the no-core shell model wave functions using Okubo-Lee-Suzuki transformation. For comparison, we have also shown the results obtain from the phenomenological USDB interaction. To test the predictive power of these interactions first we have computed low-lying energy spectra of parent and daughter nuclei involved in these transitions. The computed results for energy spectra, nuclear matrix elements, log$ft$ values, shape factors, electron spectra and decomposition of the integrated shape factor are reported and compare with the available experimental data.

The gallium anomaly reassessed using a Bayesian approach

The solar-neutrino detectors GALLEX and SAGE were calibrated by electron-neutrino flux from the $^{37}$Ar and $^{51}$Cr calibration sources. A deficit in the measured neutrino flux was recorded by counting the number of neutrino-induced conversions of the $^{71}$Ga nuclei to $^{71}$Ge nuclei. This deficit was coined ``gallium anomaly'' and it has lead to speculations about beyond-the-standard-model physics in the form of eV-mass sterile neutrinos. Notably, this anomaly has already defied final solution for more than 20 years. Here we reassess the statistical significance of this anomaly and improve the related statistical approaches by treating the neutrino experiments as repeated Bernoulli trials taking into account the fact that the number of the detected $^{71}$Ge nuclei is quite small, thus calling for a Bayesian statistical approach. In addition, we take into account the systematic errors of the experiments, their correlations, theoretical uncertainties and the number of background solar-neutrino events as a Poisson-distributed random variable. To compare with the previously reported statistical significances of the anomaly we convert the posterior intervals of our Bayesian approach to standard deviations $σ$ of the frequentist approach. We find that our approach reduces the statistical significance of the anomaly by $0.8\,σ$ for all the adopted theoretical approaches. This renders the gallium anomaly a statistically weakly supported concept. Furthermore, the implications of our approach go far beyond the gallium anomaly since the results of many rare-events experiments should be reassessed for their limited number of recorded events.

Calculated solar-neutrino capture rate for a radiochemical 205 Tl-based solar-neutrino detector

Radiochemical experiments for low-energy solar-neutrino detection have been making headlines by exploiting the isotopes \iso{Cl}{37} and \iso{Ga}{71}. Such a very low-threshold measurement of this type can also be performed using \iso{Tl}{205}, which has been considered for decades for this purpose. A unique feature of this detector nucleus is the integration is the solar-neutrino flux over millions of years owing to its long-living daughter \iso{Pb}{205}. In this study we have calculated for the first time the cross section for the charged-current solar-neutrino scattering off \iso{Tl}{205}. Taking into account the solar-model-predicted neutrino fluxes and the electron-neutrino survival probabilities, a solar-neutrino capture rate of 62.2 $\pm 8.6$ SNU is determined, a value significantly smaller than in previous estimates.

Consistent large-scale shell-model analysis of the two-neutrino $ββ$ and single $β$ branchings in $^{48}\rm Ca$ and $^{96}\rm Zr$

Two-neutrino double-beta-decay matrix elements $M_{2ν}$ and single beta-decay branching ratios were calculated for $^{48}$Ca and $^{96}$Zr in the interacting nuclear shell model using large single-particle valence spaces with well-tested two-body Hamiltonians. For $^{48}$Ca the matrix element $M_{2ν}=0.0511$ is obtained, which is 5.5\% smaller than the previously reported value of 0.0539. For $^{96}$Zr this work reports the first large-scale shell-model calculation of the nuclear matrix element, yielding a value $M_{2ν}=0.0747$ with extreme single-state dominance. If the scenario where the first $1^+$ state in $^{96}$Nb is at 694.6 keV turns out to be correct, the matrix element is increased to 0.0854. These matrix elements, combined with the available $ββ$-decay half-life data, yield effective values of the weak axial coupling which in turn are used to produce in a consistent way the $β$-decay branching ratios of $(7.5\pm2.8)$ % for $^{48}$Ca and $(18.4\pm0.09)$ % for $^{96}$Zr. These are larger than obtained in previous studies, implying that the detection of the $β$-decay branches could be possible in dedicated experiments sometime in the (near) future.

First-forbidden transitions in the reactor anomaly

We describe here microscopic calculations performed on the dominant forbidden transitions in reactor antineutrino spectra above 4 MeV using the nuclear shell model. By taking into account Coulomb corrections in the most complete way, we calculate the shape factor with the highest fidelity and show strong deviations from allowed approximations and previously published results. Despite small differences in the ab initio electron cumulative spectra, large differences on the order of several percents are found in the antineutrino spectra. Based on the behaviour of the numerically calculated shape factors we propose a parametrization of forbidden spectra. Using Monte Carlo techniques we derive an estimated spectral correction and uncertainty due to forbidden transitions. We establish the dominance and importance of forbidden transitions in both the reactor anomaly and spectral shoulder analysis. Based on these results, we conclude that a correct treatment of forbidden transitions is indispensable in both the normalization anomaly and spectral shoulder.

Analysis of the intermediate-state contributions to neutrinoless double beta-minus decays

A comprehensive analysis of the structure of the nuclear matrix elements (NMEs) of neutrinoless double beta-minus decays to the 0^+ ground and first excited states is performed in terms of the contributing multipole states in the intermediate nuclei of neutrinoless double beta-minus transitions. We concentrate on the transitions mediated by the light (l-NMEs) Majorana neutrinos. As nuclear model we use the proton-neutron quasiparticle random-phase approximation (pnQRPA) with a realistic two-nucleon interaction based on the Bonn one-boson-exchange G matrix. In the computations we include the appropriate short-range correlations, nucleon form factors, higher-order nucleonic weak currents and restore the isospin symmetry by the isoscalar-isovector decomposition of the particle-particle proton-neutron interaction parameter g_{pp}.

Magnetic hexadecapole gamma transitions and neutrino-nuclear responses in medium heavy nuclei

Neutrino-nuclear responses in the form of squares of nuclear matrix elements,NMEs, are crucial for studies of neutrino-induced processes in nuclei. In this work we investigate magnetic hexadecapole (M4) NMEs in medium-heavy nuclei. The experimentally derived NMEs, $M_{\rm EXP}$(M4), deduced from observed M4 $γ$ transition half-lives are compared with the single-quasiparticle (QP) NMEs, $M_{\rm QP}$(M4), and the microscopic quasiparticle-phonon model (MQPM) NMEs $M_{\rm MQPM}$(M4). The experimentally driven M4 NMEs are found to be reduced by a coefficient $k \approx 0.29 $ with respect to $M_{\rm QP}$(M4) and by $k \approx 0.33$ with respect to $M_{\rm MQPM}$(M4). The M4 NMEs are reduced a little by the quasiparticle-phonon correlations of the MQPM wave functions but mainly by other nucleonic and non-nucleonic correlations which are not explicitly included in the MQPM. The found reduction rates are of the same order of magnitude as those for magnetic quadrupole $γ$ transitions and Gamow-Teller (GT) and spin-dipole (SD) $β$ transitions. The impact of the found reduction coefficients on the magnitudes of the NMEs involved in astroneutrino interactions and neutrinoless double beta decays are discussed.

Statistical analysis of beta decays and the effective value of g_A in the proton-neutron quasiparticle random-phase approximation framework

We perform a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) statistical analysis of a number of measured ground-state-to-ground-state single $β^+$/electron-capture and $β^-$ decays in the nuclear mass range A = 62 - 142. The corresponding experimental comparative half-lives (log ft values) are compared with the theoretical ones obtained by the use of the proton-neutron quasiparticle random-phase approximation (pnQRPA) with G-matrix based effective interactions. The MCMC analysis is performed separately for 47 isobaric triplets and 28 more extended isobaric chains of nuclei to extract values and uncertainties for the effective axial-vector coupling constant g_A in nuclear-structure calculations performed in the pnQRPA framework. As far as available, measured half-lives for two-neutrino double beta-minus decays occurring in the studied isobaric chains are analyzed as well.
